: first post in the ftoy section, undecided need advise.
twoslo4five0 09-02-2010, 04:30 PM hello all, Im really into the ftoy scene due to the simplicity, cost and how damn reliable they are. im currently at a crossroads though.
I currently just bought a 1985 4 runner with 4.88s,detroits,bf elimator,4.7 tcase and brand new 39 inch irocks. at the time of buying it i was thinking af building a dual street/trail build for a family ride. well long story short the family part isnt happening anymore.
now im at a crossroads. honestly im working out of buddies shop, i can work there as long as i want but i dont have full acess to the shop at any given time. I own my own house, want a shop but cant build one here. Im hoping next year i can have my own place to work out of whenever i want to.
now the question. I wanna get a ftoy for trail riding but i real want to start running the "local" series some of you may have heard of. ecros. the biggest question im having a hard time with is should i buy a chasis to put on top of my frame or just buy a "proven" rig right off the bat.
all this will wait till the first of the year. I know my brain says just buy a rig, its a lot less headache and money in the long run, but my pocket says build what i got.
the four runner is decent and i hate to totally butcher it (ive done to every rig ive ever had) but i like it and dont really want to sell cause i prolly wont get what i want.im going to put a picture up, you guys give me some advise and if yall think i could see the runner what i could sell it for.
thanks alot guys and i really hope and want to join the ranks of you guys.

This, I traded a set of tires for a chassi about 3-4 years ago and slowly been building it up. If you can swing it find one thats comp legal and get straight into the game
skonkerd 09-03-2010, 01:02 AM Hey, im from ga, never heard of ecros, tried to google it, but got nothing. If you are referring to ecors, 112 and 94 have been racing it this season with great results. Both rigs are comp legal, and 94 just won the east coast werock series.
zman2day 09-03-2010, 04:00 AM Im of the school....build it the way YOU want it instead of buying someone else build ideas. But that said, Due to your lack of having a dedicated shop it certainly would be easier to buy one built already, and modify it to suit you.
Also will be cheaper to find one built already, but will you know all the quirks? will you like the seats, driver position, drivetrain and dash layout, chassis height and condition? or can you modify it to suit you..
gmcxt 09-03-2010, 05:49 AM I say build it too. Did you sell your yellow chevy with the bangin boatsides?
MT4Runner 09-03-2010, 08:41 AM There are a couple of partial FToy projects that have sold recently...keep your eyes open. You get more of a value than a "ready to race" buggy while also being able to make some of your own decisions.
Pillage the Runner and sell it whole. Grab your Longs, lockers, 5.29's, duals, and Iroks, and stuff in stock birfs, 4.10s', and some cheapo 35's and sell it to some HS kid who won't give you an extra $500 for your good parts.

:shaking: great, now I have to deal with MD's head swelling even more. :flipoff2: Just kidding. You know MD is my neighbor don't you.
Welcome to the F-Toy community.

i cant remember someone actually remembers me with that rig. not to many pics of it around. i still got it its just a chasis with a motor and trans. sold the tons and 46s, eventually when i get my own place i will build it back up with some rocks or mogs. here is its current state, minus the axles.

ive built like 4 rigs in the past 5 years, im kinda over it (not like i ever really enjoyed builing them in the first place), i dont mind messing around with them here and there but actually have more fun working on buddies rigs. I actually like driving way better :D
twoslo4five0 09-03-2010, 10:10 AM another guy that i look up to lol.
so back to my question i had earlier if i wanted to sell the toy complete how much should i try to get out of it? seriously including purchace i got about 4500 and that including the high steer and tires.
wngrog 09-03-2010, 01:11 PM BTW, I have a comp legal Ftoy that is about 2 weeks from being finished and for sale.
twoslo4five0 09-03-2010, 01:15 PM worng time for me unfortunatley. gonna have to be after the new year.
twoslo4five0 09-10-2010, 05:17 PM can anyone think and make up a build sheet for one of theese things? like options. the runner has had zero hit so im thinking i might just get a formula 4 and put it on top of my chasis. if i do this ive gotten in touch with timmay from LII and i would get him to do the work. the cost will vary depending on what i want as far as ammidities. lets see a build sheet of must have and wants. it would be helpfull.
TachedOutOffRoad 09-10-2010, 06:25 PM . lets see a build sheet of must have and wants. it would be helpfull.
you are in a entire forum dedicated to ftoys. There are probably 10 active build sheets going on.
Pick the spoon up and at least try to feed youself first.

omg, i have heard it all now. i can die in piece. what is the world coming too! i think i will print this thread out and frame it for MD and post it in his shop for him. hahahahaha. i can't stop laughing :laughing::laughing::laughing: icon :laughing::laughing: legend
MD:flipoff2::flipoff2:
twoslo4five0 09-14-2010, 11:34 AM so no sucess on seeling the runner right now, not that i have any money to do anything but im thinking ive come up with a plan.
what ever ftoy i get is gonna be used in ecors which most of you know is endurance racing. its gonna be built to we rock standards but will mostly be run in the points series with ecors.
with that in mind im thinking about building a formula 4 off the runner frame (if it will fit) loosing everything that could go wrong and keeping it as simple as possible. this would include loosing all the efi in favor of propane and running as few of wires as possible. basically ive decided that if this thing doesnt sell soon i will be investing in propane, buying a chasis and sending it to a buggy builder to get it done. i got a hold of the company out of georgia that is selling chasis and they dont have any 4's so i guess id have to get one shipped in from cali.
im still keeping my eyes peeled for a chasis to show up (im not stuck on a 4 just would like to have room) in the clasifideds. i called a guy yesterday and he wanted 2k just for the chasis (used) which i personally thought was a but high. Any way im just letting you guys know what im thinking and seeing yalls input on it.
jtaco1 09-14-2010, 11:47 AM Sent you a PM

4x4Taco 09-16-2010, 10:39 AM I built mine off my 85 runner and I don't think a F4 will fit...better check with Mike Hendrix (AirRide) to confirm though...
twoslo4five0 09-16-2010, 12:33 PM i think i read you have to extend the frame.
wngrog 09-16-2010, 06:29 PM i think i read you have to extend the frame.
Yep. I have an extended frame.
Im of the school....build it the way YOU want it instead of buying someone else build ideas.
This X1000.
I bought a mostly-finished Ftoy 3 years ago, realized as I started working on it that all the stuff I thought was putting me ahead wasn't what *I* wanted, so I was gong to have to re-work it. Got frustrated, sold the chassis a month or so ago, and ended up buying it back last night.
This time - I'm stripping it down to bare tube and doing it MY WAY... like I should have in the first place :shaking:
wngrog 09-24-2010, 07:15 AM I agree to an extent, but there are just so many ways you can do an F Toy. (if you are keeping it comp legal)
One thing I notice is that a large majority of these things are booty fabbed like crazy. I would look real close at the fab work on one before I bought it used.
