I have the opportunity to pick up a '78 FJ40 with a 327 but retaining the rest of the Toy drivetrain and running gear. All manual and clean body. What do I need to be looking for?
I am buying for the purpose of being my DD now and having it be my next project in a year or 2.
Sorry for the open ended newbie-ish questions. I've built my runner from scratch but have little to no knowledge of the FJ's.
I can get it for 3000 and it runs but needs a tune-up and some carb cleanup.
Too much? good deal? bad motor-tranny combo?
Regards
Dave

ck the tub for rust over the rear tail lights, also ck the bulkhead in the read fender well (square box on the bottom frt of rear well). you can also get rust in the frt fire wall at the corner unger air vent. thats the big rust spot on a 40 the rest is basic ck for any truck.:D good luck hope you get it TLC for life... or just toyota:D :D

I think that is a damn good price if the body is in good shape. The 327 with the stock tranny will be nice for a DD...
Enjoy!

That is a great price if it includes a hard top. If no one has messed with the dif's, they will contain the mother load for stock FJ-40 ring and pinions. 1978 (Mid year not early) FJ-40s and 55's where gifted fine spline pinion's in a 4:10 ratio. This was the only year for this R & P in the 40&55 series. After that we in the US had to weight to 1988 for the FJ-62 to have the fine spline pinion.
For $3000 you should get a great truck as long as the motor was put in right. (look at some of the adapter web sites for how the install should have been done, use this as a guide not the rule.)
Good luck and I hope you end up with the best rig!

Make sure the truck has the side motor mounts and not the
u-shaped cradle, under the front of the motor, sold by MAF during the 70's, I know from experience it will break the transfer case.........or plan on switching it, soon.
