: Do i want a zuki?
Dustin Smith 10-28-2002, 04:09 PM I am getting ready to return to college, and i need a commuter rig, and my current daily driver 87 Bronco just aint gona cut it for the 160 miles a day i will be driving. I am thinking i may want a Samurai or Sidekick, because i still want the ability to do a little wheelin on the way home from school, and i need to be able to get there in snow and such. What kinda mileage should i expect from one of these little rigs, basically stock? I really dont care about comfort on the road, but will this thing beat me to death?
I will be building this for a trail rig as soon as school is over, and i have always wanted a Samurai. Does anyone know where i can get my hands on a Samurai, Tracker, or Sidekick for pretty cheap, close to me?
Azrckcrawler 10-28-2002, 05:03 PM Ask your question here. (http://bbs.off-road.com/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=offroadsuzuki)
bobaki 10-28-2002, 05:07 PM I think that covers it ,thanks Chris.................:D
Dustin Smith 10-28-2002, 05:44 PM well, lets see, thanks for jack shit
i coulda asked them first, but i came to yall, fawk that from now on, i will ask the folks who know a godamn thing
Dychen 10-28-2002, 05:50 PM run a sidekick/tracker. they are more comfortable and nicer on the road. later on you can eather turn that into a trailer rig or get a samurai and use the tracker for parts :D

And when your ready to make it an extreme rockcrawler you can come back, do a search and be on your way.
Flipper 10-28-2002, 05:56 PM Rule number 1. Don't even think about wheeling your daily transportation. With a commute like that, buy a Toyota Echo (I did)
Rule number 2. For your trail rig, don't start with a nice truck. It won't stay that way...your just waisting money.
You could actually start with something that was hit by a train and tell people you have wheeled the same truck for three years....and most people couldn't tell the difference.
Dustin Smith 10-28-2002, 05:57 PM thanks for nothing, jackasses, i assumed i was asking folks who thought they fawkin knew something, but apparently i came to the wrong place. next time i will make sure i go to someone who knows a godamn thing.:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Rockrat 10-28-2002, 05:57 PM Now dont get your undies in a bunch its just this Board is not about gas milage its about getin it. I asked a simple series of questions, and got not one, but two smartass remarks, so it wasnt me who was the instigator
I did not search , because i assumed that everyone on her was uncncerned with ride and fuel mileage, as you all seem to be a little uninclined to do highway duty.
Thanks for the info, was that so fuckin hard? i didnt think so, but i am sure you were buffing the lugs on your boggers.:flipoff2:

Sounds like just the right place to ask about mileage then. A place where people are unconcerned with ride and fuel mileage...Do you think before you type? If you do, I'd stop.
Rockrat 10-28-2002, 08:11 PM Got to love those 2 syllable words cumwad, cocksucker, Hmmmm interesting, anything in the 3 syllable category. No not hard at all just like making the meat work for it and secondly I DONT OWN BOGGERS I HAVE THORNBIRDS

No branches on the family tree? Most of our daily drivers can be seen in the Tow Rig section (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=30) ya dumb @ss newbie :shaking:
Dustin Smith 10-28-2002, 08:20 PM if ya'll were as god like as you thought, you wouldnt need a tow rig, would ya?

zukiester1 10-28-2002, 08:48 PM hey guy buy a sami, cheap one that the body is not in good shape. go with some x-fer case gears right away, doesn't matter which reduction you go with, if you want to go faster just wind it more. slowly build little stuff while going to school like alot of the guys do. and when you get out of school go drag what body is remaining off following az around and tube it out.;) mostly have fun with it like we all do.

Shrock 10-28-2002, 08:57 PM The abuse is necessary to keep the CD player and "how do I change my oil" threads out of here. If these questions got nice responses here, it would be full of them, and then it would be just like every other Wheeling 101 board.
Besides it is kinda fun ribbing the newbies. We were all one once.
The two most important bits of advise, are have a thick skin (dont take stuff personally) and search hard. If people can tell you are searching hard they will help.
Since we are too lazy...uhh...I mean too busy wheeling...to create our own, read this:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33544
BTW Left Coasters, Y'all is most definitely a word and a damn fine one at that! :flipoff2:
Shrock 10-28-2002, 09:07 PM Lets inject some tech into this mess.
Since we are talking about Tracker vs Sammi. Here is something I have had in the back of my mind.
Suppose someone wanted to start from scratch and build a fully cut up rock toy. I'm thinking a 4dr Track/kick might be a great thing to start with. Even if you start with a Sammi, the front axle and steering are going to be replaced anyway, so the SAS on the Track/kick is no biggie.
The wheel base is right where you would want it already, ~98", so less to fab and move.
You would start with a 1.6/16V already installed.
Stronger tranmission and you should have pleanty of room for an additional tcase. Or you could just go Toy.
The body is going to get cut off anyway so styling is a non-issue issue.
I'm sure there are some draw back, haven't really researched it that much.
Let's hear some thoughts on this just for the hell of it. :flipoff2:
Dustin Smith 10-28-2002, 09:32 PM Ok, guys a little background. I am not some snot nosed , fresh out of high scholl, mall wheeler here. I am married, and have a kid, and if i get a zuki, it will be the fifth 4x4 ive had. I work at a land surveying firm, and i am going to school to get my professional surveyors license. I have never been around the sammys much, but am floored everytime i see one wheel.
i fully intend to build the shit out of this thing, but it will be in small steps for the next two years, until that little piece of paper becomes mine. I just wanted to know if the zuki would be a good choice to buy to drive, or if i should just buy one to wheel.
thanks for all the info, and my skin has become pretty thick, and i am sure this aint the worst rim job i will get from you guys.
Shrock 10-28-2002, 09:52 PM They are reliable, but they are not exactly comfortable. SPOA helps the ride a lot. Go drive one and see what you think. There are always pleanty on www.autotrader.com
They wheel like a crazed tree monkey of course. :D
marcutah 10-29-2002, 12:10 AM Wow for a second here I coudlnt belive this guy was for real. Lol
Also Shrock is RIGHT ON I agree with him totally!
Let me tell you about these guys, they are a bunch of smart Fuc*ers. There is more Zuki Rock buggy knowledge here than ANYONE could ever ask for, its more knowledge than I need right now but I respect everyone of these flamers. They know their shit and they dont beat around the bush, when they insult you they DO Mean it well. They deserve the respect period.
I myself drive a 95 Tracker with what I think are alot of modifications but nothing compared to the hardcore people here. I LOVE my tracker, and have been thinking of a Calmini 3 inch suspension. and some 33's and keep it a daily driver. Or if I purchase a car Ill do a SAS on the front end. (SAS IS STRAIGHT AXLE SWAP FOR THE OTHER NOOBS).
If they are a dick to you here SUCK IT UP and get over it. I posted a pic of my Tracker pulling a 1400 lbs trailer I was thinking that it was cool, to these guys its like Kindergarten shit. They told me it belonged on a Beach :flipoff2:
All in All if you get dissed get over it and give respect where its deserved
hats off to everyone here.

SilverZuk 10-29-2002, 05:00 AM No kidding here, if you can only afford one - get the track/kick.
I know OK is flat, but they do highway speeds, thats it.
You'll need a kidney transplant after you finish school in the Zuk.
The track/kick makes a great daily driver/weekend wheelers. Very expensive and limited options on modifications.
If you want to build something, get the Zuk. Search, read, check out vendors web sites and catalogs. Easy to make and cheap to buy mods for the Zuk.
You can probably buy a Zuk and a honda civic for what you can get a track/kick.
Buy the track/kick, get through school, make a little more money, and then buy the Zuk and build it. See ya in couple of years. (I drove junk until I got out of school, no choice)
And remember the Main Page of the website EXTREME ROCK CRAWLING.
yager 10-29-2002, 05:50 AM I have to add my personal opinion....
I would pick up a 78-85 ish chevy 4x4 p/u....
As much as I love zukes to death, when they're good their great. When they start having trouble as in high milage etc... They get $ fast... Especially on newer stuff.... Fuel pumps, sensors gizmos...
Thats a lot of miles/day and your gonna wear out a zuke/kick i think in that time frame and then with some wheeling on top... Might not hold up for DD use...
Im not saying a chevy is gonna hold up any better over time only that parts would be a lot cheeper to buy etc... $15 fuel pumps vs $100 stuff, etc...
chit chat, chit chat...... chit chat.....

Any wheeling beats sitting at home. I spent all Saturday from 11am to 5:30 am Sunday running around the desert in 2wheel drive, got 2 hours sleep and then had to go do a search and rescue for 4 kids who got lost in the mountains while trying to run in our clubs rally. I used a tank of gas on Sat, had to scrounge a couple gallons for the rescue. The kids were about 8 miles off course way up in the hills.
FLEXYSAMMY 10-29-2002, 06:49 AM Dude if you are going to be comuting that far i would buy just about any thing than a samurai! I used to drive about 45 min to work one way every day and I hated it. Now I drive a SW every day and like the gas milage and comfort alot better. Just my .02:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Ok, guys here is the deal, i am going to keep my full size bronco, but just need somrthing to drive back and forth for the next two years, i am only going for my associates. when i get out, i want to buy a zuki anyway, and build it for the trail, and use the bronc as a tow rig, but i cant afford the fuel in the bronc everyday. i was just wondering if it would be a wise move to go ahead and buy the zuk now, and get dual usage out of the little thing.
Thanks for the help....

If thats what you want to do Id probably so what Shrock said honestly its great advice. You will be tearing the piss out of the Sammi anyways and replacing alot of it, start off with a Tracker/Kick and Throw on a SAS and you already have a 1.6, go for the 16 valve one thats rated at 95-100 Horses stock, I think the 8 valve has a tad more low end torque this is only a rumour I assume. Dont know this first hand.
Try to get a 95 or so Kick or tracker those ALL come with the larger 1.6 (horsepower) The other 1.6 is rated at 80hp
I know the Horsepower stock tops at about 5200 RPM and Torque of about 100 at 4000 RPM there are alot of mods on the market to increase this.
Just re read what Shrock said about the choice damn fine advice.
Bobzooki 10-30-2002, 05:55 AM Originally posted by marcutah

OK, that's good advice. The 8 valve is a three-legged dog compared to the 16 valve, and the horses on the 16 valve are skinny and under-fed as it is. BEWARE!!! 95 is the BEST year for Trackers and Kicks - in 96 they put on air bags and made 'em harder to modify, BUT - NOT ALL THE 95's are 16 VALVES! Pop the hood. If it has a black enameled valve cover, it's an 8 valve. The 16 valves have cast aluminum valve covers, and the words 16 VALVE cast right into the top. The Kick is a GREAT daily driver, with a very smooth ride, and 28 to 32 miles per gallon.
Here's a photo of a 16 valve engine.
Bobzooki 10-30-2002, 06:26 AM This Tracker looks pretty good (and 104,000 miles is JUST BARELY broken in for these motors).
E-Bay Tracker (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1871465037)
marcutah 10-30-2002, 11:41 PM Aye that looks like muh baby in my Tracker, sitting at about 84k here.
I was under the impression ALL 95 + came with 16v motors according to official sources on the Tracker and Kick. But could be one or the other.

They list that tracker as a 16v but if you look close its a in the picture, they rate the horsepower and ft lbs torque wrong 8v model (http://www.pixhost.com/pixj/joey165/photo26333.jpg) I dunno maybe its just me, looks like a black cover with intake going down the side like a 8v could be wrong.
Then in this shot it looks like a 16v16v (http://www.pixhost.com/pixj/joey165/photo26343.jpg)
Bobzooki 11-01-2002, 09:48 AM Another tip - if the air cleaner hose goes to the left front corner, it's a 16 valve. Here's an 8-valve for comparison:
