: ford 8.8 question
jby1999 10-28-2002, 09:55 PM my local 4wd shop (OK 4-wheel drive) told me about this site also told me to foget about quadratec's bbb. anyways got a question bout my rear. i had a 8.8 from a 94 exploder put in my tj. it has drums and 3.73 gearing and a posi. my question is how many spline axles do i got short of takin it apart and looking at it. i bought an arb locker for a 31 spline since my jeep is my daily driver cant afford the down time of having to borrow another vehicle to trade it in for the 28 spline. please help me out the axle tag is as follows
S-6-2-9-E
3L73 8 8 4B15
dont know if that will help u ford guys help find me the info im looking for. i know that 8.8 in rangers are 28 spline and exploreres are 31 but not sure if the drum explorer version is a 31 also. and another question what kinda work is it to convert my drum to a disc setup. i know i need to weld brackets and get rotors and calipers (the hardware) but i dont know if i need to change axles, is there a kit, can i get parts outta a junk yard???? and last but not least do i need to change my proportioning valve??? for discs from drums? i started with 9" drums on a d35 then moved to 11" drums with the explorer 8.8
Help please???

jby1999 10-28-2002, 10:27 PM been to that site codes dont match up in any way but thax for lookin theres another site that states 90.5-94 have 31 spline axles in explorers thats why i thought i had 31 but i could have 28 dunno till i rip her open or sumone whos got sumthin tells me otherwise!
DE Jeeper 10-29-2002, 06:47 AM The last time I talked to the dealer about a similar question I was told that there is no way to tell what spline count you have unless you pull the axle and count. Usually anything with a V8 had 31 spline and anything with a 6 cly had 28 splines until '95. Notice I said "usually" because sometimes they just used what was available during assembly. It is real easy to pull the axle any ways. Just pull the diff cover and C-clip and it slides right out.
HyCaliberConsecrator 10-29-2002, 09:50 AM I just received a e mail regarding this post and how it disrespects Quadratec. I work for OK 4wd and suggested that jby1999 try this board if he is not finding the answers he is looking for at the Quadratec site. I know that Quadratec is mail order company and therefore assumed that their BB may not be as hardcore as the PBB. I am not in the business to discredit anyone's reputation. I apologize if I have offended anyone.

jby1999 10-29-2002, 10:12 AM i still use qtecs board for trail runs just not for technical no one there seems to know anything in this area that im lookin for. menat no disrepect towards qtec or any probs with ok4wd. im lookin for the info when i cant find it i move else where and it not like ok told me to say what i said. i said it mearly because of the frustration i had in reguards to finding the info that i wanted. if anyone has a problem with it please direct it to me since i made the slander remark even though it wasnt to say anything bad about qtec's board it was just a remark sayin i didnt find what i wanted to hear on that board!
Taso Stambolis 10-29-2002, 11:23 AM also try http://jeepsunlimited.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=50&daysprune=1000&sortorder=&sortfield=lastpost&perpage=40&pagenumber=2
I think more people have done the 8.8 There. Most people here go bigger wider whatever than that exploder axle.
Keith Strong 10-29-2002, 11:44 AM Or.......
 You could search here as it has been covered about 80 billion fawkin times :shaking:
jby1999 10-29-2002, 09:23 PM and i can type in the 8.8 search and find nothing about axle splines so or find nothing about my code except my ratio and thats it a limited slip. or i could also find out that theres nothing stating crap about not having to weld on caliper brackets they simpily bolt on and that you say is all found in a search. come on didnt even find that info out here found it on another bbb.
jeepbrew 10-29-2002, 10:08 PM They are all 31 splines... I pulled shafts from a '92 and put them in a 31 spline Detroit

But at the very least I will say parts for either one is cheap and available at the boneyard. You don't see many 44's or 60's at our boneyards compared to those.
Keith Strong 10-30-2002, 10:07 AM Hmmmmmm
I found this one within 2 minutes of searching
