: Crank Starting a vehical with 404 portals...

Well, the story begins with my 66 chevy with 404 portal axles on it's maiden voyage through the Rubicon trail. She worked awesome!

Day 3 on our way back through the head of the starter broke off and rendered the starter utterly useless. (It was brand spanking new by the way) We had to bump/push start the truck, in some cases down a hill. After an afternoon of downhill rock racing in a full size, it was getting dark and we were only about 2 hours from the exit. Half way up Cadillac hill the front drivers side tire slid off a rock and pinned me in a crevas killing the motor (Stupid carberators). Needless to say there was no push starting the truck. The truck was wedges between the front and the back and the only way it was going to move was to get it started and in gear.

My brother aka "ToolBox Tommy"... has some hairbrained ideas, some are just retarded, others you just look at him and smile. Then there is one of those times when you look at him and want to give him a big pat on the back. This was one of those times.

Tom-"Why don't we jack up the front end, put the rear in nuetral and leave the front end unlocked. The driver side is pinned. We could wrap a wench around it and pull start it!"

Well my buddy in a jeep was not willing to drive back down Cadillac hill in the pitch black darkness. So he went into town to sleep and wait for the parts store to open to get me a new starter, My brother "ToolBox", my brother-in-law and myself slept in our seats.

The next morning, we were determined to get it running, hoping that someone would come by to lend a helping hand, however no traffic throughout the night or in the morning, left us to our own thoughts. I remembered I had the Hub Socket and 3/4" rachet and joked that we could just crank start it, based on speculations ToolBox made the prior evening.
Well guess what... IT FREAKINNG WORKS!!!!

Here is the video....(sorry there is a minor bit of profanity in it, my brother-in-law got a little excited! lol)

Yeah saved us from having to wait all day from my buddy in the Jeep to bring me a new starter. As we got to the exit near Tahoe (about 5 minutes from where we parked) we ran into them comming in. It was about 11 AM and it took us about 2 hours hauling bawls to get to that point.

So needless to say my lil brother saved the day with his random idea, that will forever be stored in my list of trail tricks and fixes.

If I didn't have the twin stick on my 205 it would have never worked. :smokin:

That is completely awesome....

Way to think your way out of a tough situation, these clever trail fixes are one of the things I enjoy seeing most.

Very cool,,,, but what was the gear ratio with the mogs.

Very cool,,,, but what was the gear ratio with the mogs.

Axle ratio = 7.56:1
SM465 4th gear = 1.00:1
NP205 in Front wheel High = 1.00:1

The only downside would be if he could not get the socket off of the hub in time and that bar and cheater started spinning.
But still-- amazing that he even thought of it!:smokin:

it would not spin dangerously, it would free spin the ratchet mech,

fucking pimp :grinpimp:

Fawsome.

Makes me want to go in the back yard and try it on my truck. It's already up on jacks!

The only way it would work is if the rear was in nuetral(twin sticked something or other, I have a NP205) or floating and
A.) the front was unlocked and one of the wheels was pinned like we had, or;
B.) The front was floating and locked

I have not had an opportunity to try it with the truck on jack stands, but I think by having the rear unlocked it reduces the amount of torque that is required to get the drivetrain moving.

It saved us a ton of time and will forever be in my bag of tricks if the starter ever fails again.:smokin:

Cool to see it works on other vehicles with Mog axles.

One time at NWMF we tested the theory of being able to start a truck similar to that. We jacked up the passenger side rear and put a 25 foot tow strap around the tire on the tread. Once that was done 2 guys pulled on it with the truck in gear and it started right up!

Of course... with one wheel pinned the effective ratio of the front diff is halved. essentially negating the portal gears so your ratio is more like 3.78:1

You could also do this same trick with any truck though it might be best to use a lower gear to get the rpms up if you have the torque (muscles) to do it.

Good job though!

And be careful, it would suck to get beaned in the head with that big-ass wrench if a tread lug got ahold of it!

No doubt, well my younger brother (the guy with the wrench) is no stranger to getting beaned in the head with things. Otherwise, this was a last ditch effort to get the hell off the trail and back on the trailer. None of us got any sleep stressing about getting home and stuck as all heck.

At least now, if this ever happens again, we know there is a way lol

Been doing it for some years now at those times when I'm broke and can't afford to buy new batteries . Instead of using a socket and ratchet just turn the tyre if they have lugs. As Public Aenima mentioned, reduction is halved by the differential gears. With selectable locker disengaged It was easy enough to start my 3 litre engine with 5.38:1 gears and 36'' tyres, until one day I fitted a Detroit locker. With Detroits there is no halvng of the reduction. One turn of the wheel turns the engine over 5.38 times, and you have to jack up both wheels.Unfortunately I had Detroits on both ends back then.It almost broke my back, my arms and my heart getting it started before I froze to death, one snowy evening in the high country.
