: Why the haters on Thornbirds?

I read a post here about dissing thornbirds, and on Toyota forum, am I missing something here? They look and seem like a nice tire, I am thinking of going 33" and Havent decided totally, I am thinking of

MTR
BFG MT KM
TSL (no sure which)

Anyone want to tell me WHY thornbirds get grief?

Well to me it's............

Too heavy (a big one for me)
Too much of an all terrain
Too gay looking (IMOP)
Too much $$$ for what you get
And Bias ply(I like radials)

Ahh I had heard the Heavy argument, but i thought the look is really good. Im leaning towards MTR if they didnt want so damn much for them.

Alot depends on the width that your running and the type of wheeling that your doing.
Around here skinny is better as long as you have enough sidewall to protect your bead.

They are a tough tire. One guy in a taco this weekend was running them. He was right there with the rest of us the whole time. We had a wide mix of tires. HOWEVER, when I asked him, he said "I going to get them cut so they'll flex (across the tread) better."

You have to air way down, 3 psi to get them to wrap across the tread. I don't think they would work for me on my near stock weight Zuk.

To each his own and one tire doesn't work the best everywhere (except to firestone wilderness a/t's);)

If that's what you want, get them. Then try to objectively compare them to other tires and tell us about them.

Right now I'm running Hitec retreads. They work great, but the sidewalls are very vulnerable, and the tread is soft.
The soft tread grip and flexes good, but street wear is already showing. I air down to 12-15 and sometimes I think it's too much.

Hey, what do you expect for $60 a piece delivered.

I am not saying that they are better than any other tire, but I wouldn't diss them either. My GF runs them on her TJ and she has around 65,000 Km's on them over 4 years. They are less than 1/2 worn and have lots of life left in them.

Heavy? compared to what? BFG's bwahahahahah
All terrain than is reasonable on the street. Ever run Boggers on the highway!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gay...........your opinion, but they look agressive enough.
They are more than most, but they last as long as most BFG style.
Bias seem to work well on the rocks and boy do those puppies fling the mud :D

Tires have always been a personal choice. Decide for your own needs, not the needs of others, and good luck:flipoff2:

thornbirds are a lame tire. they throw their tread too soon, cant take a beating and dont grip for shiznit in the rocks....pass on them!!!

I am with Mudlite.

I have ridden on t-birds for 2 years. They are alittle heavy for zuks, I would need to air down to 4 psi to get a decent patch, never lost a bead though. They did alright in mud, not the greatest on rock, but they also were quiet on the road compared to other swampers. I only sold them because I wanted to go bigger, they had almost the same amount a tread when sold as they did when I bought them new.

The guy I bought them off of, (Mudlite you know Henrik?) swears by thornbirds, he believes they are the best tire ever, just because of their dual purposeness.

So your telling me that a thornchicken wieghs the same as a BFG MT of the same size:confused: I never said anything about the steet side, but I will now. You say your GF has them on a TJ so one would probably get a gazzion miles on those tires running a samurai (stock that is,not a vortec powered one:flipoff2:). I never said anything about a bogger either, never was a big fan of those as well........

But you did nail it on the head though, get whatever tires you want, their rubber, they will make some traction, and you will get there.........it's just when you'll get there that will vary:D

It is kinda funny but for shitty tires, your friend has been using them for over 4 years? Did he have his tires balanced, I never got flat spots when I had them.
I never said they were the greatest, but they aren't a bad tire either! They are a good tire for some one that is using the truck as daily driver and not doing alot of rocks. They do really well in the mud. They are quieter on the road then bfs and gy atleast that is what I have found and the have a really good tread life.

I think he really like them but does'nt want other people to know, I think he's in the closet so to speak:D
I'm talking about the flat spots in the morning from sitting overnight, has nothing the do with balancing them. I really don't think they are quieter than my BFG's but it could be a wieght issue there.
Like I said before, there are good tires and not so good tires buy what you want.

The site is being shitty today.
I was running 20 psi on the street, which is alot for those tires on a light vehicle, so maybe that is why I wasn't getting flat spots. I know that all swampers have problems with flat spots though, I had a problem with flat spot when I was using tsl.

Well all I have to say on this subject is... I bought a set (5) of Thornbirds off a friend (33x12.50) for $100. they had 33,000 miles on them and were siped 1000 miles before I got them.
#1- even with 33,000 mile on 'em they have more tread depth than my new BFG AT KO's
#2- at 5 psi they stuck to the rocks on the Rubicon better then anything I've drove before.
#3- they do suck in the snow on a mid to full size rig(been there done that) but I haven't run them in the snow on my light weight zuk.....yet.
#4- they are loud as hell on the street, but its a 90% trail rig who give a f*ck about the street
#5- I wouldn't pay $150 a peice for 'em, but 5 at $100....the best tires I've had so far.
Just my .02 :D I think I'll try MTRs of LTBs next....if I ever wear out the thunderchickens:flipoff2:

thornbirds are worthless, they are singlehandly the biggest pile of a tire ever built, i would rather run p235 trailer tires, than those gas ass treads, the dont work worth a shit on any terrain, if anybody sais they do, then they have never driven on a decent tire, the one thing they do well...is take the cake for the gayest tire ever produced....

I drove on a set of 31x10.5 that I borrowed from a friend that was selling them. I told him that I wanted to test them out before I layed down the cash. they too had booku miles on them and already siped. he had them on his cherokee for about 5k and never could get them balanced. he took them off his cherokee rims and put them on a set of junk 5 on 5.5 rims so he could sell them easier around here, lots of fords, dodges, jeeps and zuks around here that would like an aggressive"LOOKING" tire. I swapped off my light as a feather 31x10.5 BFG ATs and put on those dog ass heavy thornturds. My initla impression was that they were damned loud. I would have had to change out my speakers to something huge to hear my music, chopin and vivaldi just aren't the same with thornturds bringing up the background. :)

anyway they were loud, no big deal, I can get over that, the next issue was that they were all over the damned place!!! you CANNOT let go of the wheel when you have those pieces of shit on the road under a lightweight zuk!! I was holding on for dear life at times running in-town roads that had constant dump truck traffic pressing ruts into the hot concrete!!

on-road they are absolutely worthless. these tires were the worst thing to ever happen to the roadway!!!

time for some offroad wheeling, I got permission to go flog them offroad. luckily there was already about 8 inches on the ground in my favorite in-town spot and a blizzard just set in dropping about another foot. they did OK in the fresh powder. there was a significant difference between them and my ATs which does not say a whole lot!! I had to get some wheelspin to clear the tread of snow but no big deal. in the mud they clogged up as bad as my ATs!! in the mud they were worthless!!! big 31" mud balls!!! a total waste of my time. offroad they were 1 for 3.

I gave them back to my buddy who just finished up his commando project and he grew to tolerate them. I drove that thing in all the same conditions hating them equally and hating them worse in wet snow. powder was OK but wet snow clogged them up quickly!!!

in the sand dunes at little sahara in central utah they worked great!! plenty of traction in the sand due to the large lugs but that is about it.

the verdict:

I would never own them.

My buddy is stuck with them now and runs them on a dedicated rig until they throw their tread which appears to be soon, the carcass is showing through in a couple of spots where they chunked so I am not holding my breath!!!

thornbirds are showtruck tires. nothing more!!!

they suck and as soon as you fawking idiots change to a different tire, you will join the bandwagon and see just how much they stink!!! you fools just dont know the driving pleasure of the SSRs!!! now that is a great all-around tire!!! and I will always bow my head in respect for the MTRS as the current reigning champion of the all around tire. those things rock!!!
