I would not narrow the 14b to 48"!:eek: Thats 11" shorter than the original axle! Get a wheel with more back spacing at least!

I agree but i that is one hell of a strain on the stock set up for Extreme rock crawling.

my bad. i meant the stock steering and links. i feel that up to about 33's are best and then from there you had better strengthen it for serious off roading without eventual breakage from the strain. It all depends how hardcore you drive your rig in the end i guess.

Most of the montero guys down here in Az are running 35's with crawler gears and lockers, and most of the trails we do are serious rock crawling trails. I haven't seen a whole lot of breakage, mostly rock damage like mashed doors and such. But you are right with 33's you'd probably never be able to break anything no matter what kind of wheeling.

You are right, I gave a hard look at the stock steering box and it is way to (Small) putting it nicely. I will be running 35" tires but with some real HP! I will use the box from my 78 GMC and add a hyd assist with 3/4" heim joints and massive cross links!

ordered the Lunati cam and lifters and a set of the procomp shaft roller rockers with the 1.7 ratio!
Cant order the push rods until its mocked up! The heads are like 1/4" thicker then stock heads!

cost a left nut but it will be worth it.
i bought an extra tran and t-case at the junkyard for cheap. now i am just about to put it all back together with the lower gears.
I thought it might be a hard complex task but it is incredibly easy.

Im sure someone will say you cant do this, it will make the axle weak! I have welded axles on logging trucks to corn choppers with Caterpillar engines that make over 1000 ft pounds of torque with no trouble! besides I am making 2 of everything just in case! And yes It will be tested to its limit when its finished!!!

yes, I finished narrowing the axle housings! The wide boggers are only for the rear! I have 35x12.50 tires for the front!

I was beginning to wonder if the tires would rub the frame if you tried to steer. What will the width of the front axle be?

I think it´s awesome what you´re doing, but as for welding on the axle shafts i think it would be worth the money to buy some 71M to weld your spares. L56 is 50,000-70,000 psi tensile strength vs 71M 70,000-90,000 psi tensile strength with the 71M being better at bonding dissimilar alloys (I´d personally use 71 Elite).
I´d like to get into customising axles in the near future so i´ll be watching this build and probably PMing you when the time comes, keep up the good work!

Built the adapter plates today! it ended up 1 1/4" thick! The shortest adapter I had was 4 1/2" wide! Will weld it together tomorrow and get some pics!!

There dana 44 knuckles , I still need to change that one to the stronger flattop knuckle! I could have used my dana 60 knuckles but did not want to cut up a good 60! + I have a pile of 44s laying around and only 1 - dana 60 ! You think its going to be weak?
