Need help! My 83 CJ7 will not start anymore. It is a 258 with a weber carb. It use to run ok but it would back fire ever once and again. Well it seemed to get worse. Then it started dying when I got up to speed on the highway. Usually around 45mph. When it died it would not actually die completely. You could here it still running but when you pressed the gas it didn't respond. Sometimes you could pop the clutch and keep driving and other times you would have to restart with the key. It just barely seemed to run, almost with a very low rumble.
Well now things have got progressively worse. It will not start at all. I just changed out the fuel filter and it still will not start. I fI try going down a hill and popping the clutch it almost starts but it never does.
Does anybody have any ideas on what Ishould attack next?
Thanks

one question- did it die if you were stopped at a railroad crossing and just revved the motor to the same RPM's as you get at 45? If so then I would say check your fuel line the from the tank to the carb, as you may have a kink or a pinch somewhere. You may also look at the spark, maybe your coil is going bad on you. Is there a filter inside the weber? It seems that mine had a screen right where the fuel line went into it. I am thinking it is your coil. I would check there next. make sure your spark is hot.

Sounds like water in your gas. Had this same problem with my Weber carb'ed 258. The water settles out in the float bowls and you can ge a little ways, then it runs like shit for a while and eventually dies. Ended up dropping the tank and finding about 1/4th of it was pure agua.

Take the top half of the carb off (so you're lifting the floats outta the bowls) and check in the bowls with a flashlight (it's pretty easy). If there's water in there, you should be able to tell.

I'll check the coil and look for water in the carb.
Did h2o cause you to backfire as well?

Backfire=timing. Go through your fuel supply system (tank, lines, carb, etc.) and clean it all. The lines are easy, just pull both ends loose and blow compressed air through. Then give that sucker a complete tune-up, check and double check the timing, and you should be good to go. Oh yeah, you'll probably need another new filter, too.

I agree with jar head,I think it is fuel related, also dont forget to check the fuel pump, and is there a filter in your tank as well?

Thanks again for all the help.
I found out the cause to my issues.
First and formost, the + terminal was cracked. Thus part of the starting problem.
Then the butterfly values on the webber were stuck closed. Fixed that, so all I need now is somebody to tune the webber. The idle adjuster is screwed in as far as it will go. I let it run for about 30 mins and it seems to idle by itself now.
Now I just need to find somebody in Alabama who can adjust a webber.
Thanks for all the help!
