I haven't got my 404 back together yet, but I've read lots that the noise level in the cab makes talking difficult at best.

I've looked into airplane style VOX headsets, however they seem to need the airplane radio to function.

Is there a way I can get two headsets to talk to each other without a radio?

Yes I have searched, haven't come up with any radio-free system,

I may also be interested in the throat mics like you see soldiers using in movies....not sure on the price for these units, I haven't searched yet. Anybody have experience with these?

i havent looked into them in a long time but when i was riding motorcycles we would chitchat with a chatterbox. its like a 2way radio. Im sure they have improved a bunch over the past 3-4 years (when i bought mine).

Yep, never considered those. Great suggestion. Lots of sledders around here use them. I'm gonna look into compatibility with noise reduction earmuffs/mic combos.

We have been using bluetooth helmet to helmet comms in winch challenge. Google Blue Ant or Interphone. We don't actually use Blue Ant, we use generic units one of the local radio guys builds.

Terratrip in the UK make an in car unit that allows you to listen to a radio/cd/mp3 whilst also being able to talk to each other.

The free speach is vox activated so the radio goes quiet when you speak.

You can also hook up your CB radio at the same time and use a press to speak button to communicate on it as well. You can't have the radio on and the CB at the same time.

Compact and affordable.

Unfortunately it is a wired connection so you can't use it outside the car.

You can get helmet sets and ear defender sets.

I am a commercial airline pilot and I actually have a external intercom system. Mine runs off batteries and works when you speak. It is fairly common.

it has plugs for aviation radios but they are not needed to speak to each other just ait traffic control. so in an off rad vehicle - it would work.

All rally cars have them. Look for transit headsets since you won't be wearing a helmet. A couple brands are TerraPhone and Peltor
