: Steering Reverse, Behind Axle Question
Ok, i want to move my front axle forward about 8 inches and reverse the highsteer so that my steering will be in the same spot, but behind the axle. My first issue was if the steering would hit the drivshaft when reversed, but i am pretty sure it should be fine. Since my flat tops are 8 inches past the mounting location, then 8 inches forward should be jsut right to have the steering on the same horizontal plane that is on now. However, i just ran into the issue that if the steering is reversed like this the steering will steer in the opposite direction--when i turn the wheel left it will steer right and vice versa since i am now turning behind the wheel and not in front of the rear. i have seen people reverse their steering, so does anyone know of a solution that does not involve hydraulic steering or changing steering boxes? Any help is appreciated.
The Jerk 10-29-2002, 09:19 PM it doesnt change anythign , you still steer the same, instead of bashing your tie rod on everything now its your diff, course if your drag link is going behidn the axel then it would change stuff
Scout Dude 10-29-2002, 09:36 PM If you put the drag link behind too, then you need to reverse your pitman arm to offset the difference. For example, if you ran a YJ PS box (Pitman faces backwards) and then decided to swap to behind the axle Draglink, you would need to switch the pitman arm so that it faces forward. Scout II boxes work well for this since they are a factory forward box that you can face backwards and place the box abot where the axle is.
TPIJeep 10-30-2002, 08:21 AM Jeeper,
On my CJ with a 60 my draglink from the box to the knuckle angles back towards the rear of the Jeep about 4 inches. What I am going to do is move the axle 6-8 forward that will make the angle from the box to the knuckle go forward a bit. Then JUST my TIE rod will be moved behind the knuckle. From what I can tell that is all I need to do to move the axle forward and leave the box in the factory location.
HTH
well, if i reverse my arms to poiint to the rear i have to move both the tie rod and the draklink behind the axle, i cannot just do one and not the other. so, scoutdude, can i just reverse my pitman arm on my box to point forward? i overlooked that as a solution, but i see how it could work, i might need to move the axle froward another inch or so if it is pointing forward, but can i simply just bolt it on forward insteaad of backwards?
TPIJeep 10-30-2002, 08:57 AM The arm I am going to use is double sided on the Pass side, so the drag link bolts in in front of the knuckle and the tie rod bolts in behind the knuckle..
:D

I just got my double-ended hy-steer arm just for that reason. I can put the tie-rod behind & the d/l in front.
if i simply put my pitman arm in the forwards direction, it will ppointed and a downward angle, cuz it angels up when it is ppoint back. is this ok?

Forget the tie rod right now..it doesn't matter where it goes as long as it connects the two knuckles together.
If you keep the Draglink on the front, then you need to use what ever PS box you have it the stock manner (YJ pitman backwards, Scout II pitman forwards)
If you move your axle so far forward or if you have spring interference that you need to put the draglink behind, then you need to reverse the direction of the pitman arm. However, as you pointed out, the pitman will be angled down...I don't thin that you can get away with a bolt in solution..you will probably need to move and reangle your steering box...or even go with another style!
Now if I understand this correctly, your moving the axle forward 8" and you want the drag link (and tie rod) to be behind the axle with the steering box in it's stock location, Right?
Check out a older dodge steering box to swap in (maybe the newer ones too, not sure), they work in an opposite direction then yours. but It won't work with a RC axle, no clearance.
