So I suspect that I have over heated my transmission on my 03 xterra. It is a manual so a cooler is kinda out of the question. So to keep it from happening again I want to install a temp gauge, I prefer an electric over mechanical. Where would be the best place to put the sensor on the transmission? Also what way of mounting it would be the best? Drill and tap or weld on an adapter? What happened is I have a boat and after some long driving between the lake, the house, and the beach during a heat wave was just too much for it.

Are you sure you didn't just run it low on fluid? I don't think I've ever heard of overheating a manual trans.:homer: What where ya doing with it? Pulling Titanic down the highway?

Definitely wasn't low. I just changed the fluid and it was at the right level. Just pulled my family, our luggage, the 3500lb boat in 104 degree heat for about 300 miles.
Really the only reason I think it got hot was when I changed the fluid it had a very distinct burnt smell. Nothing like the axles or transfer case that had the same oil.
