Got a set of hummer wheels. I want to repaint them. They are painted military green and it is on there thick. I used a wire wheel on my 4.5 grinder, nothing. I then used a heavy gauge sand paper for removing rust from metal, seemed to work well, but scratched the surface of the wheel pretty good.
What is the best procedure to get them down to bare metal to prep for painting. I checked into sandblasting around here, and the prices are rediculous. The cheapest I have found is 20 a wheel, and im not paying that.

Sounds like you exhausted all your options. next best bet would be to trya good chemical stripper. Go to your local automotive paint supplier, etc. And try to get the best stripper you can. Give it a whirl, and good luck.:D

That paint is on there good. Sandblasting is the only answer. Bring your Sandblaster a 12-pack, maybe that will help.
Try using stuff called "Aircraft Stripper" you can get it in spray cans or pourable containers...PepBoy's sells it...Get REALLY good chemical gloves...2 pairs because it WILL start eating through them...
Brush it on liberally and let it sit for probably 5-10mins...
If it will strip years of paint off a cat dozer in just a few minutes then the hummer wheels don't stand a chance.

you underestimate the power of the dark side, er methlchloride chem strippers. that goo will take the skin off your fingers if you let it. Check to see if it's legal for sale/use in California. The good chemicals in the world never are. Those are the ones you want:D

Thanks.
I will give the Aircraft Stripper first. I will see if the active ingredient is methylene chloride in the aircraft stripper.

Maybe it's me, but I assume yer trying to take these down to bare metal? I myself have always had decent results, when painting, and just getting a very nice rough surface to paint on...
