: Lowrance Elite 5m Baja GPS
BamaSahara 09-21-2010, 10:48 AM I just saw this and was wondering if anybody has any experience or pros/cons on it? $580 plus a $50 rebate. Comes with an external antenna at that price.

We just got ours in Matt, sorry I dont know a damn thing about it yet but it is in the dash now:D Sorry, I was wrong ours is the HDS5 Baja.
shoyrtt 09-21-2010, 01:30 PM Your link is to PCI Race Radios. Just call them and ask for Jimmy or Rhiannon. They teach the Lowrance classes for PCI and are really helpful.:) 800-869-5636
howyadoin 09-21-2010, 03:06 PM I'd go with the Baja, that's what we've always used.
tw89yj 09-21-2010, 03:57 PM There is a used Baja 480c on ebay right now.
shoyrtt 09-21-2010, 04:45 PM Again Jimmy or Rhiannon are the "experts" but we have used the 480, 540, HDS8, 8200 and the HDS10 over the past couple of years. They all have the same basic functions, the HD series just have a few more bells and whistles and loading the chip is a little different. We even bought the 8" Chartplotter from Bass Pro Shops when PCI and everyone else was out of stock earlier this year when they eliminated the Baja line. We tossed the fish finder and other than the markings, it was exactly like the HDS8. My guess is the "Elite-5" is just a re-tagged HDS5. ;)

so it's a good deal or no?
BamaSahara 09-21-2010, 08:01 PM For the price it is a killer deal if it is any good. The HDS-5 Baja with the external antenna is like $850
BamaSahara 09-22-2010, 04:29 PM Called PCI they said it is a good unit with the same basic features as the more expensive ones. They also said the mount will not hold up off road so you need to flush mount it. For the money I think it is worth a shot, since it includes an external antenna
65Chevy4x4 09-22-2010, 04:36 PM We just started carrying these as well. The mount isn't as heavy duty but it's a way cheaper unit to go external ant than an hds5. PM me if interested in getting one.
JTJeep 09-23-2010, 06:51 AM Whats the refresh rate on these?
any better on the HDS because it sucks.
BamaSahara 09-23-2010, 07:04 AM I don't know much, honestly PCI didn't either. They said they got them last week and haven't played with them much. Not sure, maybe Lowrance would know?
broncdawg 09-23-2010, 09:49 PM PCI is testing them out and will know more about them soon. Need a gps for the mil, so maybe they'll post up here after a bit.
apeters89 09-24-2010, 10:17 AM I'm certainly interested if these will work.
I don't mind the $550ish for the HDS models, but the extra $200+ for the external antenna sure seems like a kick in the pants.
Jeepmangled87 09-27-2010, 09:54 AM Go with the bigger screen at least a 7inch, we have a line on the Lowrance systems. The full color is nice to!

in a race truck I can see that, do I really need it in a chace vehicle?

Nope, 5" is plenty for chasing and easier to mount/keep out the way.
