I have a 73 FJ40 with a Chev 250 6 cyl and 3 speed Toyota trans. Don't know how it was installed. A bottom flywheel cover for a 73 Toyota 6 cyl will not fit. What would it take to put a V8 in it?

welcome newbie :flipoff2:

see ih8mud.com for details about V-8 conversions, I'll give you the short version though;) things you will need....

1. a V-8:p
2. a bellhousing adapter
3. motor mounts
4. a bigger radiator
5. modified driveshafts
6. sending unit adapters (if you want your gauges to work).

the three speed might be fine but I would put in a 4 speed land cruiser tranny or a 4 speed SM465 which would allow you to delete the bellhousing adapter from the list.

Honestly I've never done one (my 78 was already converted) but I'm very happy with the end product and it was well thought out. The biggest adjustment in the drivetrain was because everything moves about 4" forward and requires custom shafts or the cutting of the existing shafts.

Give you are starting with a Chev motor now, you may get REALLY lucky and find that the 350 bellhousing and the 250 I6 bellhousing are the same pattern and interchangable....

but I dont know....

Given you have a 73, the conversion _I_ would do is:

350 to SM465 (granny 4-speed) to plate adapter to 73-Cruiser t-case. Off the cuff worst case pricing at $1500, best case $750.

Motor = $200-$500
tranny/bellhousing = $100-$250
Plate adapter = $375-$500 (including replacement tranny shaft - may be cheaper depending on your fab skills and connections)
Driveshaft mods = $100-$250 (retube required for both, may get away with cheaper options)
