: Need AMC Model 20 Help
Background: Installing waggy front 44 and rear 20 under my XJ, yes I know the weaknesses of the 20 and have already addressed these.
The problem: I'm regearing the 20, the pinion uses a crush sleeve, however there is a factory installed spacer under the inner bearing race. I broke mine while removing the race. This spacer is not included in any rebuild/install kits (I don't know why). I have contacted local axle shops and Randy's R&P and Drivetrain direct, but none could help. Contacted the Stealership and they can't get if any more. Got one buddy (Rusty) who is working on finding one, but none yet.
So, does anyone have one of these or a few (I believe they came in different sizes like shims) laying around? Mine is a hair under 3/16" think.
And for those who feel the need to bust on the 20 or give me the old "Go 60" :flipoff2: .
Thanks
Sundowner 10-30-2002, 09:54 AM doesn't that cast iron ring just suck the big one? :D
mike it, it should be about 0.100 thick (+/-)
It's been a while, but I think we used some loose shims between the pinion head and the pressed on bearing.
84JeepJohn 10-30-2002, 10:37 AM hey check the stealership again. I just picked up some clips for my M20's crosshaft and they had them. For my part, I think they were expensive, but way cheaper than a new carrier. call the other dealer's. good luck
Holy bat testicles, I didn't even look at your location, I went to Red McCombs on Brodway and they had the clips there in about 4 days.
I went to Red's too. They are not in the inventory any longer and they said they could no longer get them.
84JeepJohn 10-30-2002, 12:55 PM would it be the same on a cj M20 as a wagoneer M20? if so I have the parts of my old M20 at my inlaws house. I might be able to find it. I'm not promising any thing because I did not get all the parts back from the gear shop ( LONG STORY ) I'll look this weekend. please give me a good discription and I'll see

Don't bother. A) They're machined, II) They're prone to cracking all on their own and whammo you have a shaking pinion. Use the shims like Sundowner said. We used D30 carrier bearing shims, I believe.

Try our local moderator. The previous owner had them, I mam sure he does.
84JeepJohn, cool, if ya can find it I would really appreciate it.
Oxjockey, I have the carrier shims with the install kit, but they are not the same inner or outer diameter, would that still work?
Also correct me if I'm wrong, but I wont need the exact same thickness since it uses a crush sleeve correct?
CJ, I didn't understand your post?
again, thanks
Oxjockey 10-30-2002, 02:27 PM This spacer will have no effect on the pinion preload, it's for pinion depth. The D30 ones fit well, but the M20 carrier shims will not - the D30 ones sit under the bearings, the M20 ones go between the races and the housing.

:emb4: Well I get the dumb shit award on this one.
When I found this "pinion Depth Shim" broken, I went through the install kit looking for something that matched it in size. Of course there was nothing. So the task began to try and find one (some). Well once you guys brought up putting shims between the bearing and pinion head I got to thinking and looked at the install kit again. Sure enough, besides the carrier shims, there were some smaller ones that fit on the pinion. So, I have what I need almost, there were not enough to equal the thinkness of the orginal shim:( a quick phone call and I'll be getting some more in a few days.:)
Don't know which was worst, discovering my bone head mistake, or admitting it here.
Thanks all.

Get? Don't you mean "keep"?! :flipoff2:
Oxjockey 10-31-2002, 07:40 AM What's really odd is this doesn't come up more often and should be addressed with any install kit you find, including a note that says what to do, etc.

CoryB :flipoff2: Now u can't barrow my cherry picker! :D
Ox, your right, if you have to install it differently then how it came apart, the install kit should address this.......
