: Hardcore tech! Where to cut the bed to get at the fuel sender
budget76 09-30-2010, 08:04 PM May be too hardcore for pirate:flipoff2: Gotta pull the fuel sender (stock 19ga) out of dads S2 to pull the sock off since I'm home this weekend and he didn't when we had the tank out. Since the tank has no drain, and 15 gallons of diesel in it, I'd much rather just hack a hole in the floor of the bed and screw down a patch over it afterwards. I know people have done this. Anyone got measurements/a tape handy that can tell me where to cut?
It's got a 3" body lift, so there's plenty of room between for the sawzall to get at the floor. Ya, it's mall crawler/DD, the yota' gets wheeled now, there's too much money in the scout:p Don't know if I can see myself yet, it's dark in the garage and I can't find a flashlight that works:shaking:
JetFxr 09-30-2010, 08:25 PM Just support the tank with a floor jack and drop it. Hacking a hole in the bed is getttttttttttttto and wrong.
472Scout 09-30-2010, 08:50 PM Easy to figure since the sender is basically centered. Gotta agree with Jetfxr though - drop the tank and get 'r done.
IDScout 09-30-2010, 08:59 PM Found This (http://www.binderplanet.com/forums/archive/index.php?t-15720.html)
X3 on not cutting a hole if the Scout is so nice you don't wheel it anymore.
Super Scout 10-01-2010, 05:21 AM Yeah I would drop the tank. Was never a big fan of cutting holes in the floor.
budget76 10-01-2010, 07:32 AM ID, thanks for the link, I forgot about searching thru the archives.
Can't believe you guys are saying don't cut it:p It is a good point, though, and would give me a chance to put the skid back on that hasn't been there in a couple years.
The problem is, it's either cut the hole and get that damn sock off and hopefully let it run highway speeds, or nothing gets done and he can't drive it:( He has a couple other projects first in line, and it's raining outside, I can't drain the tank, won't do it inside it's too much of a mess. The hole WOULD be covered by the rear carpet, so not like anyone would ever see it. It's no show truck by any means, just too much time and $$ into it to beat it up again.
Thanks guys, got me thinking again
'71 800B 10-01-2010, 07:33 AM 15 gallons of fuel isn't that much. I would siphon off some to lighten it up and drop it. I just replaced the pump in my cheby pickup. was going to pull the bed but the tool boxes and rack would be a pita, so I dropped the tank with fuel in it. Wasn't so bad.
Brandon 10-01-2010, 07:41 AM dude, if you can't empty gas from a tank you shouldn't be touching that S2...

I can empty the tank just fine, just don't like doing it inside, even if it is diesel, thank you very much:flipoff2::p
I'm going down now, just gonna bite the bullet at drop the tank. Going to run metal lines and some new rubber while I'm at it.
76scoutII 10-01-2010, 09:01 PM that's right!! I did cut a hole in the bed of my scout II. When I used to have a 30 gallon aluminum tank, the rubber line got pinched/kinked because the tank was closer to the underside of the bed, I think it was meant for a body lifted scout so there would be more clearance. Odd thing was it worked OK except when going uphill under load, then the truck would run as though it was running out of fuel. anyways, that tank is long gone due to not liking rocks and trails, and I'm back to the stocker 19gal. I cut the hole because it was 110 degrees summer time, sawzall was about 10 min to cut it, compared to 2 hours to drop/reinstall the tank. I was too lazy to drop that big ass tank in the heat, as it was a real bitch to install. It works for a trail/beater scout like mine because I can access the sender [which recently decided to stop working, maybe has a bad float, a known good sender gives the gauge a reading]. Anyway, here's the pics and measurements. I used some aluminum railing to reinstall the sheetmetal and can seal it in with silicone or caulk, the bed works just fine, and I countersunk the screws so they dont catch on shit. BTW, anyone in the market for a used radiator, there's only a big ass hole in it where the fan hit it!! flame on! :flipoff2::flipoff2::smokin:!!

budget76 10-01-2010, 09:36 PM 76, you're the man! I knew someone had done it and could show me the tape:smokin:
Wound up just dropping the thing though:laughing: Ended up being a good thing, one of the breather nipples on the top was broken off, and the other was cracking off. Sealed each up with JB weld, wouldn't have found that without dropping it.
BTW pulling the screen off the sender made a difference, it can get up to highway speeds now without problem. No longer starved for fuel:D

Hey, no prob man, god thing you found those other probs and got it all going good. I still need to yank my sender and test it, but I am lazy when its hot outside. yeah its october first and it is 104 fucking degrees outside, well now its 95 or so, but earlier at 5pm it was hot as shit still. Sometimes I hate the sun and desert...
472Scout 10-02-2010, 12:09 AM Pretty clean ghetto fab. :flipoff2:
