I have a TPI 383 with a 700r4 trannie. I have a 231 with a JB short shaft, and 2lo conversions. I am seriouly considering going with rockwells and 48" tires with 20" rims. If I do this, shoud I keep the 231, or get a beefier tcase? Thanks.

Definitely more beef. There is no sense in upgrading to rockwells if you are not going to be able to use them to their potential. Trust me, you will be a lot harder on your stuff with that extra boost of confidence, knowing your axles aren't going to break, and I would say that that case will be the victim of that extra confidence.

Throw a 205 in there and call it a day.

Gotta go 205!!!! , Why would you want to keep the 231 when you are running that kinda beef? the extra reduction just aint worth the weakness.

I fugured keep it till it broke. Don't think I'll ever get the $$$ I've spent on it, Short Shaft, 2lo, AA 700r4 kit...

So what tcase do you guys recomend going with, and what side will it drop. Preferably somthing that will bolt up to a 700r4.

Thanks

Talk to Offroad Design or Wagoneer Machine. They could get you set up with a 203/205 combo that would get you about 4:1 out of the cases. If you talk to Wagoneer, they can setup a 203/203/205 combo to get you 8:1 out of the cases. Of course this all depends on your wheel base because these add length to your drive train quickly. The 203 can be bolted to your 700, you just have to have a new output shaft installed in the tranny, parts were about $200 and labor was about $225 when I had it done. This would give you a passenger side output. Good luck

Ditch the 231 for a Sammi t-case w/5.89s, and be done with it.

i just kept my stock t case in my cruiser because i am such a tight ass. and if it ain't broke why fix it. but a 205 would be a pretty good idea to make the rig that much better. mike

umm...........only if you like breaking tailshafts and gears. even with the tailshaft conversion the gears inside are still weak compared to a 205.....if it was me the 205 would be my choice.:D

You have to be kidding, and as far as the porr=205, rich+atlas goes, if you can afford the rockwells, setting them up, and 48" tires with 20" beadlocks, then you can certainly save a bit more and go atlas. Don't skimp. :P
