View Full Version : Mog rear with D60 front

I have found a 404 mog that is being parted out here in OZ and was thinking of buying the steering axle for the rear of my hybrid. Now the biggest worry is the mog axle is 7.56:1 and for my d60 front I can get 7.17:1. This is a 5% difference (most recomend only 1% diff max)
Im thinking (hoping) that it wont matter. A ratio this different would be like driving around on a 300ft diameter circle with the rear locker in (this would also give a 5% difference wheel distance travelled) For a trailer queen I dont this will be a worry.
What do you guys reckon???
Anyone else had a good look at doing mog axles? Any ideas?

buy both axles that way you can enjoy the increased ground clearance on both axles. don't know what side drop the front diff is which might cause more problems for you.
i would not run that much differance in the diffs unless you are planning to only run in mud or can run differant tire sizes to make up the differance

I thought the same thing Sam...Typically I can place my front where I need to, when I need to, but the rear alway's seems to grab something as it is "off-line" if there is any turning involved on the obstacle. Sure would be nice to have 22" of clearance under the rear diff!
I would consider turning those mog's into a 9" hybrid...You have the skill (and it's really not all that bad). All you would have to do is source the inner axles, and the supper secret oilier for the pinion and your done for not all that much $.
I'm not even done with my project (well yes I am...Just waiting on DS's  but that's a different story...And I'm already contemplating doing the hybrids...Damn...Then again if the C303's work out I might sell my Dana junk and buy a pair of those. Simple simon.

Doug,
Let me know when you are finished. Remember, you gave me a year from that date.:D

Yes Rich you have one year from the point at which I can actually drive the thing...Eric at Six States has been giving me the run-around for about 2 months now...He'll say to me "I've got-um built, give me your CC #"...Then, "I'm working up the final cost and invoice right now...I'm very busy, bear with me, I will call you later today"....Then a week later, when I call him it's, "The drive flanges I got from the machinist are bad and I can't balance the shaft...I'll call you right back". Never does....If he wasn't about $350 cheaper than Jess and Tom Woods' I would have bagged him long ago...However I've been talking with Jess, and he's got me sold...Clearanced 1350 CV's with 1410's at the pinion!! Yea baby!!! Talk about worry free for ever. I asked Jess about the possibility of running a 1310 on the front (to save $) and he asked me what tire size I have...His response was quick and very blunt "That's just stupid..."
Now to convince the wife that I need $1100 for a pair of shafts!!! Riiiiiiight!
John...Stay tunned...I'm gussy-ing her up now while I wait for the shafts...Cage is all nice and purdy, but still not painted....Still haven't TIG'd and painted the rear skin's etc...But if I had the shaft's I'd be beta testing right now....Pic soon I promis.

I would get both also. There is a 404 locally that I am lusting after.
Have only seen a handful of 404's but they had the front dif on the left. Have heard of people removing the tube, swapping sides, but never seen it.

Negatory good buddy...The mog's are a pressed and welded housing...Now fliping the case over and re-drilling is something I think can be done, but unless your willing to crank your front axle way forward your gonna' be running a 8" front driveshaft.

Yep - I think im going to get both axles. Will be easier and cheeper in the end (dont have to worry about gears or lockers etc).
Any ideas on how to get the pumpkins on the RHS. Do I have to cut and shut or can I swap the front and rear housings or something else??
I guess i should do a search.

Flip um....
It's gonna' be a pain to do, but not all that tough...The Mog's have a flat bottom. Therefore you'll have to cut the bottom of the housing and the top, and swap the two. I'm sure the 3rd can be the jig, and your off to the races (the housings are steel btw). Check the pic. I think if you cut the top and bottom of the housing you could swap them and re-weld pretty easy.
I was sooooooooo close to buying the Mog's before the 60/70 deal came along. Damn near did it. Thing was at the time I could barely comprehend the 60/70 swap, much less a pinion switch on a Mog housing, then swap! O'well.
Damn "sport" is killing me!

Then again, you might be able to just flip the portals and run the thing upside down...Looks like the pinion is very close to the axle center-line.
I betcha' you could over fill the housing and be fine with lubrication!
Check it!

Im wondering if the front and rear housings are the same. If they were then I would be able to swap the housings front to rear, keep the drop boxes in the correct positions and swap the axles left to right. I spoke to the guy at exaxt and he said that when they put a steering axle in the rear they swap the drop boxes left to right so they are rotating in the correct direction (I think that the boxes will just bolt straight up when doing this).
I sure I read somewhere that the housings were the same or I might be thinking of rockwells??

404 front and rear housings are the same. the best way to swap the diff to the other side is to precisely cut the tubes , and swap sides. This is how most guys are doing it. As long as you have a good welder patch them back together, It will be as strong as the original housing. Lots of guys narrow them as well.

OK so they are exactly the same (as opposed to being opposite) Cut the tubes and weld them. Too easy. Thanks KC
