most of the tanks that i see online are well above $1000 (for a 50 gal+ tank/toolbox combo).

what's up with that? aren't these just welded sheetmetal boxes? am i missing out on something that makes these worth over a grand?

thanks

are you talking about those diamond plate toolbox looking tanks?

well diamond plate isnt cheap. a tool box alone will cost 200 bucks, and those are usually very poorly constructed. take the time to have someone tig weld the bitch good enough to pass pressure testing, and youve got a lot of time on expensive machinery invested in that tank.

might also have to pass some certification to legally be sold as gas tanks, but I'm not sure about that.

that's a pretty good way of describing it. Hell even the crappy diamond plate is expensive, I don't even want to know what the stuff they make tanks out of costs. Not to mention the amount of internal baffles that would have to go into a tank that size. there is a lot of material in one of those bad boys.

Fuel tanks like that have regulations and fee's associated with building them and we get to pay for that.

Just build your own. I spent about 75 bucks building mine. Get some .125 plate cut it up and weld it together. Don't forget the 2" pipe thread filler bung and a vent. It holds 100 gallons.

DOT regulations is most of it. The non regulated (transfer)
tanks that arnt hooked to your fuel system are alot cheeper.

I built my 40gal tank with .090 wall aluminum. Made a couple internal baffles/dividers to help with fuel slosh. Cost me a grand total of 100 bucks.

the tanks you describe are only $400-$600 in Northern Equipment.

Been thinking of one for the back of my trail rig, kills two birds with one stone (yets me the new tank I need (bobbed bed) and the tool box I want.... juist not sure if I'm ready to drop $500 for somthing that isn't "perfect" for what I need, and would still have to modify *just* a bit)

check them out, they are listed as axilery "fuel" tanks, and come with sender and such....
