When is someone gunna start making shortened shafts for rockwells? I'd like to narrow mine about 10 inches front and rear. There has to be someone who can do it cheaply enough. Come on!

A buddy of mine has narrowed his for a comp. buggy that he is building. He is toploader4x4 here on the board.

He narrowed the front 7" which is simple enough, by using a short side axle on both sides. He narrowed the rear the same amount, but made it so his driveshaft was straight. The last time I talked to him about it, he was just going to cut the axle flange off and turn the center of it out, so that his shortened axle would fit through it and he could weld it on both side of the flange.

He got conflicting stories about whether this would weaken the axle where it was welded,so he is trying it to see and it has not been tested yet.

You can send him a PM and he will share what he knows with you.

Running a short side on both fronts then centers up the diff right? What did he do about the drive line not hitting the oil pan or starter? How much is it gunna be for the alloy shafts? Dare I even ask!

Just spoke to him and he is putting the motor in this weekend. He said that he measured the best he could without the motor and does not think it will hit. This may not apply to a standard vehicle since his is a buggy and he can put the motor anywhere he needs. Also you only lose 3 and 1/2" of your offset and it still is offset to the pass. side because of the offset of the toploader itself.

If you want, I will try and get some pics when he gets the motor in and post them.

$450 for a front U-joint axleshaft, any length. Seems like this is a quick way to make cheap Rockwells expensive.

Same as R25FS, but for rear.

So $3000 for custom width Rockwells that are rebuilt. That doesn't seem too bad does it??? (it doesn't to me but I don't know much about 2.5 prices)

These guys do awesome work! They have been building pulling parts for a long time. I didnt even know that they were building any axle shaft like that.

Is that piece bolted to the yoke, the cap for the joint also? I know it is a 1410 joint and probably won't ever break, but if it did, it wouldn't take but about 5 minutes to change it. Cool.

Yea these "U" joints look nice but, like all "U" joints in the steering axle they have promblems, when you turn stop to stop the "U" phase's or it turns fast - slow - fast - slow four times each revolution x 2, you have two axles, this is what you feel in the steering wheel. It can get real bad with a welded carrier, dt. locker or spool. These convell do not have any phasing, they are smooth as silk. From left to right, 2 1/2 ton rockwell convell w/1.625 ;16 spline, convell w/34 spline 1.750 shaft manufactured for Differential eng.,2 1/2 ton rockwell stub, dana 60 35 spline stub. steve Differential eng. inc.

I spoke with someone at Matkins Monday and they were very nice and helpful. I asked what strength is the alloy that is used on the new Rockwell shafts. 4130 is what is used. I'm not into these alloy numbers but this gentleman said their shafts were "as" strong as stock shafts. I wanted a supplier of modern technology axle shafts with a good deal more strength that stock. I have been able to run SPL-90 spicer joints instead of the stock rockwell u-joints that are double sealed and have zerk fittings. Stub shafts,I've been told, are the weakest part on these stock shafts. Any comments?
