I finally got to play with the Binders.

On Friday, I climbed in the Travelette and headed for Billings, stopping in Harlowton for yet another fuel stop, and some hot-beef sandwiches for dinner.

http://www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/gallery2/d/90298-1/2010-10-01_18-42-07_971.jpg

Then on to the hotel..

http://www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/gallery2/d/90304-1/2010-10-01_21-15-19_69.jpg

Ran the quarterly meeting for the M4x4A on Saturday, took the kids shopping, to a Corn Maize, swimming, and so on.

Sunday, we headed back out of Billings just up the road to Acton, where the Intermountain Offroad park is. I haven't raced since March this year.

Robert/JetFxr/Montana GSE has an employee, Ricky, who's been working for him since before he had full-timers.

Ricky was fortunate enough to ride with Robert when Robert did his backflip, so his brother, Ron, wanted to get in on the action.

Ron used to run stock cars, so this wasn't something entirely new to him.

We got some hot laps in, but missed the heat race when the starter decided to not engage for some reason - but got it fixed in time for the main.

I tried to show Ron a good time.

http://www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/gallery2/d/89821-1/IMG_6642.JPG

The Scout wasn't cooperating as much as I'd like, though. Ever since I rebuilt the engine the last time, it hasn't been as right as I want it to be - I couldn't pull 3rd, and it was pokey going through the RPM.

http://www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/gallery2/d/89860-1/IMG_6655.JPG

I remember making 4 or 5 laps of the 14 lap main, but stopped counting/lost track early on.

I remember getting lapped by one of the faster Modifieds, and really wanted to try to not lose so much ground, despite the engine not running as hard as I wanted it to.

So I tried to carry 2nd gear through the U-turn, instead of throwing it sideways, grabbing first, and hammering the throttle and drifting.

Well, the engine didn't want to really GO in 2nd, and the corner was pretty soft.

The GPS says we were doing about 50mph at the time, and when 31x15.50 Terras on 15x12 wide wheels hook an edge on soft dirt, they catch an edge.

I remember watching the top hit the ground at least twice - I think the third time was when it stopped, but maybe it was the second - I wasn't counting that earnestly.

Everyone was OK, though I failed to shut off the master switch on my way out and had to crawl back in as fuel was pouring out of the upside down carb.

My wife, Robert, and everyone else didn't have a clue, since I managed to screw up in the one spot of the track not visible from the pits.

They did stop the race just for me, though. :)

I didn't think to get the camera out of my pocket before they flipped it back over..

Here's Ron, posing.

And inspecting some of the damage - you can see the quarter panel got it.

http://www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/gallery2/d/90172-1/IMG_6759.JPG

Me, after stripping off the fire suit - yeah, shorts and boots, I know..

http://www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/gallery2/d/90187-4/IMG_6764.JPG
http://www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/gallery2/d/90193-1/IMG_6766.JPG

And the skid-steer helping us load..

http://www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/gallery2/d/90232-1/IMG_6779.JPG

So far, I feel fine. :)

Front clip is toast. It came off completely in the wreck.

Radiator seems OK, but the radiator hoop broke at the top corners - but did it's job.

I need a new air cleaner.

Passenger quarter (steel) is pretty flat now, but the Howteron fiberglass driver's quarter is no worse for wear.

Lost 1/3 of the RF brake rotor - not sure how or why, but that's Ford parts for you.

Borgeson steering joint came apart but got it back together enough to steer again.

I actually started to drive it back on the trailer, but the tranny had lost too much fluid.

Really, not all that bad.

Oh yeah, it has rear steer now - the driver's rear axle, a vintage Travelall Dana 44, has a pretty good bend in it outboard of the springs, making the thing crab-walk everywhere.

Rollcage held up fine though.

:D

I guess I should get after that new racer now..

Woke up at 1:00am sept 30th to give dad a breathing treatment and his med's and found he had passed away while we got a few hrs of sleep. he was diagnosed with cancer two months ago and it kicked his ass! SO this weekend was spent cleaning up around the house. he was a pack rat and so far 3/4 ton of his garage is now gone and 1/2 ton of his back yard is gone.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Hope your week goes well.

I mess around with my Ninja bars, what a pain of a project. I would have though what 1/2 day and be done. But no, mess around all weekend and have really nothng to show for it. Close to getting one side done, still need to make one little piece of tube to tie the rail to the body and one side will be finished. :shaking: Help Matt work on his burb a bit too.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. My grandmother passed away in August, and another long time friend died quietly in his sleep last week..

It'll buff out. Probably that gravy covered mess you ate. Threw the balance off :D

I think it's the passenger's fault - the passenger side hit first, and Ron's brother, Ricky, was with Robert when Robert rolled - but at least we went over sideways, not front to back.

You can make out the custom rear-steer..

http://www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/gallery2/d/90353-2/2010-10-04_08-03-16_397_001.jpg

And clearly the passenger side got the worst of it..

I guess I should get back to work on this thing now..

Oh, and of course, I didn't bother to put the in-car video camera in for this race...

Sorry to hear about your Dad.

After work Friday I met up with a friend and drove to Chicago to drink with some friends. (Wrightwood Tap)

Saturday I was invited to a party, but I ended up not going in favor of meeting up with a female. I got her back to my house , we talked awhile and then I fell asleep on the couch.

I did get two other numbers Saturday. I have a date with one next weekend, and the other whenever I get my bike back from the shop.

So yeah, I had a good weekend. :D

A little plumbing... a little electrical.... a little mechanical.... cut down some trees around the pond, skidded them over to the brush pile, cut up about 1/3 of the brush before my chainsaw konked out. Burned what I had cut up and kicked back on the tractor with a few beers while I watched it burn. That's about it....

Sorry to hear that 800:(

Wound up going back to NJ to visit my grandpa in the hospital. Chemo is kicking his ass, and then on top of it he fell and broke his hip. He was in very high spirits, and more enthusiastic than I've ever seen him in my life, so we'll see where that goes.

Dropped the tank on dad's diesel, took it for a test ride, and was able to do 65 fairly easily now. Of course it's getting cold and we didn't have time to throw the hard top on, so if he drives it to work the softtop better keep him warm:laughing:

tsm1mt ........ I feel you...... sorry for your loss....

budget76 ........ that sucks about the hip and the chemo. the chemo ultimately took my dad. He worked at Kaizer Aluminum in the pot room and had COPD becouse of it. the chemo caused fluids in his lungs and he basicaly drowned to death.

I did however get a chance to pick up the full top that I left in my sisters field 8 years ago.

The Sunset Challenge is a two driver race, I went 25 laps in my #67 car and then went 25 laps in the #5 car. The video is a little long and not as exciting as being there. :D

I just stared at the 392 which is back on the stand and completely tore down. A couple a weeks back I was driving it to work, and before I noticed that I didn't have any oil pressure I lost too much oil. I did catch it before I seriously seized everything. It was just the #1 and #2 connecting rod bearings. What happened was the bottom hose running to the engine oil cooler popped off. I fucked up and neglected to recheck the tightness on all the hose clamps. I don't think the crank will need a serious grind, but the cost of having it done is what is holding it up right now. So at the end of the month I will have my AT check and I'll be able to put it back together. I figure since I have the pistons out, I'll rering them along with fresh main and cr bearings.
