ok...i have a 1988 jeep cherokee. 4.0/aw4/np231. i am starting to build it up and wanted to do a sye on it...then decided i might as well replace it with a dana 300 for almost the same price. well a little more money and i can do a box 4 rox/300. i picked up a 23 spline dana 300 the other day. well i was doing some looking around today and saw something that says pre 1991 aw4 transmissions have a 21 spline output. is this true? if so...what do i need to do? i am still not 100% clear on this whole setup, but for now this is my main concern.

so in short. 1988 xj 4.0/aw4/231 and a 23spline dana 300 tcase on the floor. what all do i need to do to run the box 4 rox/flipped 300?

Pull the case apart and swap the input shaft. I had to do it on my other ZJ. It's not really hard and only takes a little while. JeepForum should have a decent writeup on it, or NAXJA, or Mallcrawlin. I think I remember seeing one on here, but cant remember and am feeling too lazy to check right now.

you have nothing to worry about. Your AW4 is 21 and so is your 231 you have now. It is already in the jeep and works right? Then your 23 spline 300 bolts to the back of your 231 doubler where Duffy supplies you with your 23 spline stub shaft that goes from the 231 to the 300.

ok...well thats what i wasnt sure of...if duffy supplies the (mid shaft?) that will go from my 21 spline stuff to 23 spline stuff. thank you guys for the info!

you are fine, i just did one on my 89, the mid shaft is the same, only difference is the input on the 231. just make sure it is for the 23 spline 300 and your good, i bought mine from duffy off ebay cause i heard some people say it took weeks to get it when they ordered, cost like 10 bucks more for shipping on ebay but i got it in 4 or 5 days.
