: Aftermarket shifters

I want to replace my sloppy stock shifter in my 91XJ w/AW4 tranny.

Wheeling in Arizona, we climb some pretty steep stuff, and I need to be able to hit reverse easily. My stock shifter just plain sucks. There's no feel for what gear I'm in, and finding reverse is dicey at best. It's also a little to far forward for me to reach when on the big climbs with the harnesses on. I'd like to move it back maybe 6" from the stock location.

Recommendations for aftermarket shifter for the AW4 thats gated (if thats the right term) so I can slam it into reverse? Pics?

I believe this is the only one available due to the AW4 being computer controlled. He is here on pirate also and it seems people are really liking his kit.

I'm pretty sure you can still you use an Artcarr/Winters type gated shifter. However, you still wouldn't be able to choose between 1st and 2nd. Artcarr just released a gated shifter designed for rock crawlers that allows you to go directly from drive to reverse.

Teenycar used an Artcarr/Winters shifter in his Jeepspeed build but I never heard how it worked. I think if you search in the Hardcore Jeep section you can find a couple guys that have used them when they swapped AW4's into their Wranglers

Edit: Here's the link to his JS build, been awhile since I've read through it but I think he talks about the shifter in there and there's some pics of it towards the end... http://www.jeepspeed.net/smf/index.php?topic=1554.0

You can move the factory shifter if you make a new console.

You can modify the gates in the shifter how ever you want and make a lock bar With the lock bar down you can slam it into Reverse but not go past reverse.

The Art carr is a nice gate shifter, Id like one of those. I have a ratchet shifter with a modified no revers lockout. Alot of guys really like the pistol grip shifters.

Thanks for the referal. Yes we make a gated shifter called the "Rock", the advantage of using my Rock shifter with a Rail shift controller is going from any forward gear to reverse and then back to that same gear. I don't think anyone else offers that option. Of course you could use a rock crawler version of the Winters/Art Carr with my Rail shifter and do that too. Your choice. Yes I make a model that you can mount back closer, and that includes a plate that covers were the original shifter was mounted.
Hope this all helps.
