interested in registering my ftoy in texas but cant find the info on what it does and does not have to have to pass. any ideas where to look? i can find tons of stuff about homemade trailers but no vehicles. im thinking whatever a dunebuggy does to get legal should work for me as well.

I went and talked to a state trooper and told them what I was planning to do, and they let me see the regulation book with all requirements for makig it street legal.

Here in the great state of NC, you just have to do a little planning. To register my FToy as street legal, the DMV Inspector came by, took a look at it, and took some pics to send to Raleigh. He also took the VIN and title to my 88 Pickup to run the numbers (making sure I own it...). Then he sends off for a new VIN as a 2010 Custom Vehicle. Once I bond my second frame (I used a SA frame instead of the 88 pickup frame) and get 2 appraisels he comes and inspects it once more (does a safety only inspection) and HE applies the new VINs to the frame and chassis. Then, goto the tag office and pay my taxes (that's what the appraisels are for) and get my tag. That's it. Done.
To pass the safety, all I need is follows:
Running lights
Headlights (low only is fine)
Horn
Brake Lights
Turn signals front and rear
Tag Light
Seat Belts
Driver and Center Mirror (or Driver and Passenger)
"Working" speedometer (i'm just using the stock gauge and cable to pass, then switching to a TomTom for accuracy...
I'm just waiting on the VINs to come in, and get my bond for the frame, then I'll be on the road!

Vince I just got my state inspection certification (1.5 hours I wish I could get back!)... I think all you need (stuff you already have isnt listed):
1 Rearview Mirror
E-Brake
Low and High Beam Headlights with an indicator for high beams
Wipers (But no windshield...still havent figured that one out :shaking:)
Turn Signals(orange or red rear, orange front with reflector) with indicators and they have to lock in place (but dont have to cancel automatically)
One licence plate light
Front and rear License plates
2 Tail lights (has to have red reflector)
2 Stop lights
Horn
Vin Number on it
Exhaust system has to exit after passenger compartment
Insurance
Your steering and your wheels arent DOT approved (I dont think many would check though, but thats a risk you would have to take).
If your title truck is older than 84 you dont need any emissions stuff (which I think yours is).
This is what you need to pass inspection, I cant remember if you have a title or not....but thats the bare minimum to pass inspection! Custom vehicle, you are going to have to call the DPS (good luck with that :D)

I did in Ca and its a bitch since you will need the supervisor at dmv to do it both a good and bad thing since no one else knows how to do it.
But your first stop is chp since you need to apply for a vin number on the vehicle. Bring all receipts you have on the thing as this will help explain how you got it and whether anything is stolen. Anything that looks like it used to be from a vehicle is going to work against you....go custom. Go slow and a lot of yes sirs. Now this is for a green sticker only the brake and lamp would be next and a freaking nightmare but not the end of the world in truth.
Then go to dmv and get two appointments since its going to take awhile. I also brought the vehicle and the paperwork so they could see it.
At all times be clear it is for ohv use only. More take your time and a lot of yes maams. That is a beautiful wedding ring you have there sure helped me out a lot. If they want to call it a sand rail or dune buggy screw it.

im in cali and about to do the same thing. I dont have many reciepts at all. I bought the vehicle out of state where they didnt need anything for paper work to wheel. I hope that I can call it a sand rail or dune buggy. If they find toyota vin numbers on the frame am I going to be in trouble? Not to step on your feet moveaside but dont you have to go to dmv first to get your appointment at chp?

VIN on frame is not a complete number anyway, so I doubt they'll care.
I would just tell them its a 4wd sand rail. Fiarly close i power, and considering 4wd, weight as well. Plus rails are just tubing anyway.

Mine is registered as an '86 Runner so I could have a plate and a permanent registration sticker.. It's not street legal; I didn't have it re-inspected after the build, but I needed some sort of registration to run it on the FS trails and also be legal in CA (registered in my home state) for KOH trips. Doesn't need to be street-legal; just needs to be registered. I didn't want to register it as an OHV, then try to register it later if I wanted to make it street-legal.
Insured as a dune buggy.
Good luck, BLINGN.
