Been planning this for a while. Truck is a 1964 Travelette, currently running a stock 392, 5 speed direct, Watson over-direct-under, and NP205. Spicer 70 front, RA15 rear. 4.88 gears. It has the motor mounts on the bellhousing. I am going to run a 518 2wd with the NP205. I have an SV-to-SAE adapter ring from an IH 1700 Loadstar Allison 540. I will be sawing the bell off the 518, and making a steel bellhousing to mount the trans to the adapter, using the pump bolts. Fabbing motor mounts on the new bellhousing. Pics as I progress.

I really want an automatic with overdrive. The Mopar units are the simplest and strongest. Gimme some criticism!! The 205 will remain divorced. The Watson and 5 speed gives me plenty of ratios, but I have been dealling with noise and vibrations for three years. It seemed like a great idea, but I am tired of it.

Only criticism I have is you are a fool for trying to justify anything or reason with larboc:laughing:. I think it would be easier to use the adapter from IHO and go GM, but dare to be different and I hope it works out

The adapter to GM would make it more difficult to fab the bellhousing motor mounts, and the Mopar trans is much stronger. This truck pulls a 33 foot camper, and six people.

To what GM transmission are comparing the 518 too for strength comparisons ?

To what GM transmission are comparing the 518 too for strength comparisons ? The only OD model, that wouldn't have to rely on an external controller, the 700R4. I would love to use a 4L80E, but I am keeping the electronics to a minimum on this truck. Before you suggest a beefed 700, I own a transmission shop, and make my living on automatic transmissions. I know what works. :homer:

A 700 is not up to the task of a 392 hauling a 6000 pound truck, and a 5000 pound trailer, with all the people and gear. I have several 518/618 (46/47rh/re) units, complete and in pieces. I will be selling the Watson, PM me. Been without power the last two days, so no real progress lately.
