: Hobie KOH PREP 2011
well here goes another KOH prep thread for me. i will be racing the same FTOY #10 again! this makes 5 in a row.
i am the only one of the OG13 that is still racing the same buggy that they raced in the orginal race.
so every year it gets faster with more and more improvements and upgrades.
here is the list of things to be done:
cary at gotpropane.com is installing a turbo for the 22r on propane and tuning up the motor.
mike at hendrix motorsports is going to freshin up the chassis with some straight tube. not one tube on my ftoy chassis has been replaced since 2003! its been in about 20 comps and 4 KOH races and wheeled at the hammers for 7 years. its been quite a chassis that has held up great.
once we get a straight chassis, the ftoy is headed to Desert Valley Towing where i am going to work with HT to do some fab work. we are going to install bump stops from FOA and some other little stuff. It will be re wired from scratch as well and we are fabbing up a new dash to make the wires and fuses easily accesible for quick trail side fixes.
Then Hi Desert Driveline will go thru my drivelines and make sure they are all up to snuff.
thank you Desert Valley Towing for a return sponsorship. GotPropane.com - FOA - HI Desert Driveline - Edelbrock

Ricks72ntx 10-28-2010, 03:33 PM So your still staying true to the F-toys and keeping it on leafs?
So your still staying true to the F-toys and keeping it on leafs?
but of course! :D at least just to spite everyone in the race
this thread needs pics:
here is 2007. the OG-13 running of the race. that year over 50 people said they would show up. but only a few turned up. dave had even talked about doing it the year before but it took some time to get everything together. mustard dog was my co pilot for that inaugural event. i got off work at 2am and drove out to the hammers and got there by 5am. woke up an hour later and started the race. mustard dog and i didnt even make it to the first trail which was outerlimits before we got lost  at one point we got out and stood on the roof of the ftoy to see what we could see  i don't konw if there are records but i ended up about 7th position after playing recovery and winch anchor point for everyone the entire race, lol.
this is from 2008. memphis john was competiting with my ftoy on the east coast werock series. he drove it out for the race. here we are on wrecking ball. this race like the preivous, started slow for us before we caught everyone. we were so far behind that everyone thought we were out of the race. our shock mounts broke at mile 1! we lost a driveline at checkpoint 1! and then it was about 5 hours later when i caught john james on the very last rock trail which was big johnson :D ended up 13th place
here's 2009! another finish! 3 in a row at this point. 20th finishing position:)
here is 2010! i had the most mechanical trouble this year. from shifters falling of the tcase to the alternator going out. we finished in the dark and it was a blast! 28th position
Mustard Dog 10-28-2010, 03:55 PM This is all wrong:shaking:

hahaha:D true. since i gave us a walk thru KOH history as far placement, here's my prep time for those events.
2007 - i tightend up the ubolts the and steering arms the night before
2008 - i didnt do a thing. memphis john did the prep work
2009 - i took 3 weeks off work right before the race. tore the entire thing down and rebuilt it
2010 - i worked on it thru christmas at john jame's house. then i didn't see it again until the week before the race where i finished up setting up the suspension.
this will be the first year that we will be using a real GPS and not a pocket one like last year. all the other years, i didnt use a GPS at all. in 2008, i showed up at 6am (just got off work) someone handed me a paper map. i looked at it for 30 seconds and handed it back and jumped in and took off!

Then we had to re-tighten them coming down Claw with a fawking Metric Crescent wrench:shaking::laughing::laughing:
Then we had to re-tighten them coming down Claw with a fawking Metric Crescent wrench:shaking::laughing::laughing:
lesson learned. never install new ubolts right before a long trail race and expect them to stay tight. both center pins broke and fell out on the trail somewhere. so the did the bottom leaves. we had to drive down claw and back to the lake bed with the front axle floating fowards and backwards and self steering the buggy. :shaking: goodtimes :D
TachedOutOffRoad 10-28-2010, 05:13 PM Cool man.
Good luck and way to represent!
Bastardized 10-28-2010, 07:42 PM That one hell of a story. Wish I could run KOH but I don't have the funds for a race like that...... I will just live the race through someone else...... I plan on being there for the race so if anyone needs a pit guy I would most definitely love to do it!

nice! you are recruited :) report to the Desert Valley Towing / Marlin Crawler pit camp somewhere in hammertown when you arrive. you will be gladly welcomed and put to good use :)
mtbrjon 10-29-2010, 05:22 AM Hobie you should also mention your training and physical conditioning throughout this past year. I think that's an often overlooked ingredient to a successful race program of any type.
Good luck on race finish #5! I have plans to take off 2 weeks this year and be on the lake bed if not for the LCQ then at least to hang out and help my buddies.
wngrog 10-29-2010, 08:12 AM Didn't JR have this current Bronco for KOH 07?

I'm in. Would it be better to get there like 2 weekends before and leave Saturday or Sunday after the race?
Roxywheels 10-30-2010, 09:50 AM Who are you prepping this early??? Its almost like you're a responsible adult now!! :flipoff2: :roxy:
Jeff Knoll 10-30-2010, 10:16 AM Hobie, Gonna miss the race on the 13th. Gotta Do a UTV run at the Hammers.
Who are you prepping this early??? Its almost like you're a responsible adult now!! :flipoff2: :roxy:
lets just make it clear for the record. the ftoy has always been "prepped" before i get to the hammers. it might of been the week earlier, but it got done :smokin: i have never shown up at the hammres with anything broken or needing to be worked on :p
Hobie, Gonna miss the race on the 13th. Gotta Do a UTV run at the Hammers.

Looks like it's 3 weeks before. I can't be gone that long. Just make up your own 100+ mile epic and we'll do that. 12-24 hour mtb races are mind numbing anyway. :D

true that. how bout we pre run the KOH course? :D that would be an adventure:smokin:
Propane 11-04-2010, 06:22 AM Sorry I haven't gotten to post yet about this. I got stupid sick the day after the rig showed up at my shop. Having no energy and breathing in fab fumes has slowed me down a bit. It is coming along though!
Mr Roxy 11-05-2010, 07:15 PM Curious to see how the turbo helps, might look into this more next season.

yes i would do it. oh here are some other important parts to that story. air pressure was low and on dirt and most importantly, in 1 to 1, not redlined in 2 to 1
Ricks72ntx 11-07-2010, 10:04 PM Did you do anything to your motor to prep it for the turbo?
Did you do anything to your motor to prep it for the turbo?
nope. but the block was machined 3 years ago and it hasnt been thrashed too hard since meaning i havent rolled it and kept driving it upsidedown like i used to for the fun of it.
the head was machined and rebuilt with LC stage kit. i also ported and polished it 2 years ago.
losekannon 11-08-2010, 10:42 AM I have been getting parts together to turbo mine using a 20R block punched up to 22R, hopefully it will be done someday. :)
Good luck.............
Propane 11-08-2010, 05:59 PM O.K. here we go. This rig turned out awesome! Thanks Hobie!
You all will notice that I don't publicize the whole turbo thing. Reason bieng I get one to 2 calls every day that last at least a half hour, in which guys want me to explain each and every detail. There are several things that must be in place for this to happen. It has to be the right year motor, an exhaust manifold, a turbo, lots of extra plumbing, a strong engine to begin with, a weeks worth of fab, several hours of tuning, a strong head gasket with head studs, a very good working knowledge of engines and turbochargers, and an extra $800 to a grand laying around. This does not include the propane system either. It certainly isn't for everybody. I strongly recommend to guys that don't know turbos to build a high zoot motor to run 105 octane. I am the only guy at my shop that knows this and just can't explain 20 years worth of experience in a short amount of time.
What I do for these is sell the right turbo and pictures that I send with the turbo to help with the installation. I only do this for the 22r motor.
thanks cary! i can't wait to get it back. we will test it and see what the new power is like and get some video. stay tuned for high speed action coming your way
Propane 11-09-2010, 06:03 PM I had to take it out on the road today to tune a mixer for another customer.:D It rode better than most cars:smokin: I do need a few more days to finish bullet proofing things. This rig is in amazingly good shape for bieng through, excuse me, FINISHING 4 KOH races!

GLADIATORFAB 11-10-2010, 07:28 PM You can do it!!!!!!!
can't wait to see a turbo on it!

Glad to see your rig finally getting some boost. Cary is the man. It should absolutely kill. Can't wait to hear it !
easyspops 11-14-2010, 02:49 PM Hobie, that's impressive, shows that a well built car can survive many years of punishment. Even more impressive, you and the car finished all the KOH's.
Glad to see you're doing some freshening up, and hopping up the motor. The turbo is the right way to go.
Best wishes for your best finish yet, Gene.

holy toldeo! did you go to 5th gear in 1 to 1 :D
great video cary. thank your wife for me. i know how scary it is, just going 50mph in that thing. feels like 100mph

Wilson 11-17-2010, 05:23 PM What axle ratio are you running hobie?
Propane 11-17-2010, 05:35 PM I just realized this was in 4wd. I was wondering why it was bieng funny in a sharp turn. Kill mode is more impressive but this race is part strategy too.
skonkerd 11-18-2010, 12:45 PM There is just something that brings a tear to my eye when i pull my toy on the road and roll up behind a car, and then pass them. It could be the lack of a wind shield, but i still think of it as tears of joy. Good luck, and may the force be with you.

Cary........... 3RZ turbo kit............ DO IT! :grinpimp:
Man that is bad ass. Now you need a auto trans so you don't have to shift 5000 times in the race. With the buggie a little longer, rear air bumps and a turbo. Go for the win.
UGET IT 11-21-2010, 12:09 PM Seems pretty quick.........!

I wonder what the failure rate is at KOH for auto trans vs manuals? If your auto takes a crap your done. Even if you loose a gear on the manual or the clutch you can still make forward movement. Less weight with the manual and no trans cooler. Simpler is better in my opinion.

5.29:)

The manual is A LOT harder on parts in the desert, no cushion. Seems to work for 4 cyl toys, but not the heavier, higher powered rigs. Kevin Sacalas switched from a manual to an auto after some failures with his sm465/ atals.

HHhmmm? I don't have much desert experience. That's a little surprising. In road racing (yeah I know "This ain't road racing"!) you would never dream of an auto trans and you're shifting constantly particularly in a 24hr event. I guess the "no cushion" is a bigger issue in high speed off road than I thought. Do you know what sort of failures he had?
Sorry Hobie didn't mean to hijack.:D Talked to Cary today. Got the lowdown on your engine.:grinpimp: Hopefully he'll be able to make it out early for KOH to do some pre-wheelin. Amazing that i've known him so long but never met. I can bring my built to hell turbo 22re engine for back up if you want. I don't have a rig to put it in now anyway.
If you are road racing then you would never run a auto trans. But I do think that every KOH winner has had a auto trans. You just have to cool them right. Evey one could use a back up engine:D
Air Ride 11-23-2010, 08:05 AM Its all all about the shock load. When you are charging the whoops your rear wheels are off the ground up to 50% of the time. Also the auto makes it a lot easier to haul ass through those short smooth areas in the rocks.
so thanks Cary!!! the ftoy left AZ today and is headed back to desert valley towing. Thanks HT for getting that done! :)
losekannon 11-24-2010, 10:41 AM Sooo is it the DVT in Apple Valley?? Thats right around the corner from me, like 2 minutes. Would like to check out the turbo set up case I have been getting parts together to turbo mine now for about 6 or 7 months.
JessD 11-25-2010, 04:52 PM DVT is in Oak Hills, the storefront (or whatever its called) is in the same area as Greg's Sheds and the towyard is across the freeway.
Hope they put it out front again so I can see it going to and from work, always made my day :D

Just saw this... Not trying to gank someone else's thread but wanted to clarify. Actually, we're still running a manual. We just switched from a SM465 to a Richmond 5 speed. We never had any race failures with the sm465 but we did find that the 23 spline shaft was not sufficient enough for race purposes. We switched to a 32 spline shaft and it was rock solid all year long. We upgraded for better gear ratios.

mtbrjon 12-01-2010, 07:19 PM So Hobie you gonna install a little race seat in the rear for a passenger?
Yes he needs that now. You got a seat I could put in it?
mtbrjon 12-02-2010, 02:32 PM Yes he needs that now. You got a seat I could put in it?
We do have a mini Kirkey but it's not THAT mini! Wrap him up in a blanket, strap in with 5 pt., he'll be fine.
oakesmi2 12-08-2010, 09:49 AM Hobie,
Have you had a chance to take it out since it is back in CA after the turbo install?
What are your thoughts of how it turned out?
How does adding the turbo affect crawling ability or throttle control?
Sounds like you have an addition to the family on the way, Congrates on that!
Mr Roxy 12-08-2010, 11:14 AM Yes inquiring minds want to know.
mtbrjon 12-08-2010, 11:36 AM From my personal experience with Cary's turbo setup I can tell you it's the single best improvement I have ever made to a Toyota based rig and mine was in a exoed cab truck that probably weighed 500lbs more than Hobie's.

i agree would not have another yota motor without turbo, oh and john that truck weighed a lil over 4000 loaded, and with stock gears dual case and 4.7 would smoke 38 sxs in 5th gear!!!!! , cant wait to see what it will do now that it weighs 2000lbs

I'll sell you my whole 2wd ex cab turbo truck for $1000 and you can take the manifold off of it. Sweet truck but the block has a large hole in the side of it.......
I'll deliver it to you this weekend!!!

We might be able to work something out, I need a 2wd to commute. Just don't think I can swing it this week end. I need the stock manifold, for class reasons.
sorry guys, i havent gotten a chance to wheel it at all. i have started it up and it sounds awesome, so thats all that matters
and i got the stock manifold from a friend of a friend
well first things first when prepping this car imparticular. this chassis is 7 years old and has been wheeled in more comps and trails than it cares to talk about it.
so i took her over to Mike Hendrix place and we gave her some new tubing :)
and i took these awesome cell phone pics with a busted up blackberry:flipoff2:
we brought the chassis back out to spec and she looks a lot better now.
i also might quite a list of things for Richie (crew chief) to do when comes and picks it up this weekend from Mike. It shouldn't take him too long
we also added some angle iron to the bottom tube for hammers protection
mtbrjon 01-06-2011, 03:35 AM Updates?
no, who has time to work on rigs these days :flipoff2:
i am waiting for you to get here so we can start working. the whole buggy is torn down to the frame so it won't be a big deal to put it all back together
mtbrjon 01-06-2011, 03:22 PM Ok just so long as you have plenty of 1554 or Fat Tire and we can do at least one epic MTb ride I'm in!

mtbrjon 01-09-2011, 04:35 PM when are you going to be out here?
1/31, 2/1, or 2/2 depends on how work goes between now and then. Still have to finish my buggy and perform some maintainence and do some mods to the trailer.
Got the ftoy in my garage today. There is going to be some long nights for me. All post up some pics and updates tomorrow night.

ghettowheeler 01-15-2011, 11:28 PM Hey Hobie what size angle iron did you use for the bottom tube? I was thinking the same sort of idea for more beef. Got any better pics of how it turned out? Also I was curios as to what air pressure you run for koh. Hope to see you at the race. Good luck.
Chris
YJ_Lorence 01-16-2011, 07:57 PM It not much of a Buggy right now looks more like a broken down mess.:grinpimp:

mtbrjon 01-22-2011, 06:17 PM Bunch of fawkin comedians........I can hardly wait to get there.
A quick up date. The f-toy is a mess. It only took 4 hours to take it a part. The only thing that is not going to be removed is the engine. When the turbo got put in the steering had to be moved. It has been down hill from there. We had 61 things to do and 5 have been done. Here is a few pics.
mtbrjon 01-24-2011, 02:57 AM  Looks like it's going to be a long week.

noclinkers 01-29-2011, 09:47 PM How can you? Still needs to be wired.:D
Well it went away today. Still needs some work. We started out with a list of 61 items. We got 55 of them done. Everything we did took 3 times long then I thought it would. Next time I will give myself 4 times longer then it should take. I just need to thank my Dad, Bob, Mark and Robinson for helping me out on the Ftoy.
DCuzzz 02-01-2011, 10:35 AM That’s pretty clever to use a garage door opener to adjust the angle of the Cyclops light for hi and low speed driving.:D

Welcome to Race Prep. It just takes forever.
runnerboyy 02-12-2011, 08:42 PM I'm glad I was able to come to the race this year, I had a great time. I'll give a full report of my experience later but I just wanted to say I had a great time.
No matter how much the car is prepped you can't be prepared for everything....
Sincerely,
Anthony/ dalton/ Kyle/ eaton/Cleatus/ Keaton.
chvyhs 02-14-2011, 04:05 PM Now that the race is over,
What were you happy with on your rig and what weren't you happy with? Specifically the turbo. Did it work for your application? Was it the right size? How did it do on the rocks vs. the open desert?
Thanks

yes, the turbo 22r on propane is the bomb. i would of had done this years and years ago. i actually could control the foy through the woops with the throttle. something you can't do without the turbo.
