: D60 Front Springs

Hello all,

Searched, but can't find what I'm looking for.

Just completed my 14B D60 swap. I put 63" Chevys out back, and originally put 52" chevys out front.

The fronts were level, if not slightly reverse arch'd right out the gate, plus, it was sitting about 2-3" lower than in the rear. So I took out those springs.

I came across a fantastic deal on brand new 8" Superlift springs (52's), so I purchsed them, took out the overload, and the lower leaf, and put them on. Now my front is about 1.5" too high.

I was going to take out another leaf, but have a questions.

1. Is it dangerous to take out yet another leaf? (There are still 4 in pack, and I will have antiwrap bars)
2. If not, then which one would you recommend? I'm thinking the second one from top.
3. Just ditch the springs, and get like 4 1/2" springs.
4. Get add-a-leaf for original 52's

This is a dedicated trail rig, and won't see any street time, unless it's just driving from camp site to trail head.

Thanks alot everyone for making this site such a great source of knowledge.

Put the old 52s back on and a 3" lift block.

Nice answer!!

I may just leave it also.....I guess my OCD is working against me...but it is noticeable.

I checked out that link in your sig. Is that still going on or has it been resolved? That's a bunch of BS.

Anyway, if anyone can recommend how they would proceed, I'd appreciate it...Since the springs are new, I may see if they settle any, after a couple of trips..

Here is a side shot:

Put a winch on the front -- wheel it and it will sag out to level in no time.

I have stock 52" worn out springs in mine and love the flex. But they are flat at best.

Yeah, good point, winch is not mounted yet, so that will help.

I'll just wait around and see if she settles.

Mount the winch, adjust the headlights down and run the piss out of it...

Post a pic from the front or rear, I'd like the see the width of the axles.

Looks good :smokin:

Man, those IH engines are HEAVY. I finished a 496 for my boat this spring, and from carbs to pan my engine stand held it up fine.

I put my 392 on it, and it bent it....had to put a cement block under the balancer to keep it from wrecking it...

Think I read somewhere that 304/345/392 weighs in at 798 lbs....yikes!!!

Find some 6" ones.

Put a winch on it and wheel it a bit before changing springs again. There is a good chance they will settle some and be at the right height.

That thing is TALL, you need to saw up the wheel wells and lower that thing. Like a Jeep your gona need a kick stand:flipoff2:

Here's one I did SOA zero lift and 38" tires, Your gona have to embrace the saw if you wheel it.

I like JetFxr beater. Mine had 4" of lift and 37.

When I first built my scout80 with lfted chevy springs, I was even front to rear. :grinpimp:
But after adding all my tools and spare tire, the back sagged lower. So I switched out the rears and have a slight rake to it... which levels out when heading to the trail "loaded" with gear.:flipoff2:

put a longer shackle in the rear.

Oh yeah, sawzall is ready to roll.........

There is a 3" body lift that PO put in that is coming out.....so we'll see how she sits after those pucks are pulled

put a longer shackle in the rear.

I came to that conclusion last night if the front doesn't settle.....

I agree with ugly scout. Put your shit on it and run it. They WILL sag after a few trips and some good wheeling. Also, X2 on dropping the body lift. Otherwise its a pretty solid lookin machine:smokin:

Looking at the pic, your shackle already looks like a lift shackle, might want to give it some thought.

It does look too tall in the front, which mean driving by Braille:D
Pull a leaf and see how it looks and drives. Yes axle wrap would be a concern as you run less and less leafs. There are some Ford trucks out there that only have 2 leafs from the factory.

My springs have close to 8" of free arch, but flatten out nice to about 4" to the bump stops. They are RS44044, but I had to add a leaf as mine would bottom out with the IH mill. Those Ford springs are thicker, more like the stock scout leafs for the rear.

Edit.. JetFxr, did you ever post pics of that green Scout suspension? I would like to see a couple suspension shots if you don't mine. I've wanted to lower mine for a while as kick stands are a pain.

I guess we need a thread of how close is the top of the door to your tires:flipoff2:

Just wheel it!

I ran stock 7 leaf waggy springs in the front for awhile, was running a SBC though...38's and a sawzall...good combo.

Now running 6 leaf waggy springs with some toyota rear leafs mixed in and IHC motor, works decent

Pulled body lift out.....

Here is before and after.....and for Buck, a rear shot of width. Don't worry about screwy brake line routing, it's just sitting in there for now until I replace with new.

Oh and when I put weight on front bumper to simulate weight of winch, it came down fine....just a tad high, which will come down when it settles so I'm confident I'm good.

Sawzall is ready and willing.....already started on opposite side.

Waiting on driveshafts, shocks, high steer components, finish up some brake items, weld up the perches, install winch, put in antiwrap bars, and she'll be ready to go. Everything is on the way and a second project day is scheduled with the local crew, and the wives have a big cookout all planned for the evening. :D:D:D

Then next spring, will redo interior with new dash panel, gauges, etc..and replace the junk yard special seats with "real" offroad seats. (There are 6 buckets so our 4 kids can go on the trails as well, the local 4x4 crowd calls it the "school bus")

Best thing.......my lovely one-of-a-kind house commander is fully onboard and doesn't mind the expense involved, and even wants to be the first one to take it down the trail....:D:D:D

Just out of curiosity are the 63"s out back a factory spring, or a lift spring? I have a set factory 63" springs sitting in my garage, and I am contimplanting if I should use them or not. What size tire are you running? and what is the height to the lower lip just in front of the rear tire?

Sorry for the hijack.

Fishwagon

63's out back are stock springs out of a 1ton Chevy

This is an SOA setup....fyi

Tires are 39's, but will be replaced shortly with slightly bigger ones.

I'll measure for you today and let you know....
