I was wondering if anyone has used one of these?
If so how did it work?
Worth the $$
What type of perfomance gains did you notice?

Thanks Nick

this is on my To Do list, from everything I have heard this is the ticket for 2.5l's. unstallable to 500 rpm :D
no real street performance loss

I'd be interested in seeing someone's Real World test of it...

It's so dadgum cheap, you almost HAVE to do it.

My YJ is not all that bad with the 2.5. I do however have the 5.13 gears but even with the weight of the 36" tires it still lacks a bit. I was hopeing that it would improve hyway driving due to loosing momentum with the 4. I would like to here some real world testing. Anyone?

I have ridden in Nasviks alot, His is awsome.. IT made a hugh difference off-road.

Hopefully he will chime in when he gets done doing what ever he is doing.

I've got one of these. I routinely chug down to around 200 RPM's and recover without worrying about stalling. If you're already going to be in there to do the clutch or tranny work it's well worth the cost.

Nick, a local XJ-er put one on his 2.5 and loves it. So far it looks positive on all counts.

I used one on my TJ and I loved it. It was much better on the slow crawling. I didnt have to dick around with the clutch to keep the engine from lagging. I loved it. It is a good upgrade and I didnt notice any performance change on the street except for the occasional rear tire bark on the 1-2 shift.

I run an interia ring in my 2.5L, its the difference between night & day offroad. The little motor will chug down below 500rpm & keep right on going. I am running 5.38's & 36 TSL's.

On the road its a little easier on the clutch pulling out and didnt hurt gas mileage at all.

If your already taking the tranny out, IMHO its well worth the $$.
Just install it and enjoy it:D

ps. Does anyone know what brand of drill bit comes with the kit, its the best bit i have ever owned, i use it constantly for pilot holes and the thing will not dull. I may have to give tricounty a call, i would love to know what brand so i can get an entire set.

I guess I'll throw in my $.02 as well...

I am also running the inertia ring. Rig setup is the little 2.5L, 4.3:1 Atlas, 4.88s and 36" TSLs. I experience all of the positive things mentioned. Difficult to stall, easily chuggs down to 200-300 rpm and keeps going. In lo-lo I can easily idle up and over most things using a hand throttle to apply a little juice when necessary.

One installation note not mentioned in the docs. The stock inspection plate may not fit once you install the ring. You have to grind away a little material on the back of the block to clear the ring and there will be little space left for the insp plate. I cut the old one down to cover just the bottom of the opening an put it back up. Mock one up with cardboard or plastic before you cut of the original plate. BTW, what did everyone else do about this?

Have not notice any loss of performance on the street, but then again it was nevert great and I trailer it most of the time.

If you're gonna pull the tranny/xfer case anyway go for it. While you at it resurface the flywhell (after drilling the holes) and replace the clutch etc while you're in there.

Is one also available for the 4.0, or is it even needed ?

Thanks

As of now I have no reason to pull the trany. When the clutch does start to lag I think I will invest in this. Thanks for all the replys

Add to the replys. I had one put in when I had the 4 banger rebuilt (regeared to 4.88 at the same time). With the regearing it is hard to tell what made the difference, but I haven't stalled out on the trail near as much as I used to, and as for noticeing it on the road, once again regeared so lost some top end, but maintain speeds and take off pretty good.

I will be throwing one in with my tranny job tomorrow. I am trying to see if anyone can expand on the inspection plate issues JeepX3 mentioned. I know I saw mention of it as well in Nasvik's write-up. Just wanted to know what I can expect. I have searched a lot and there is not much mention of inspection plate issues.

TIA

I think I read they're around 145 or so from tri-county. i'm too lazy right now to go check on that. :flipoff2: whenever i pull my tranny next I'll def. throw a ring in there. It seems there is nothing bad at all about it and only results is good things.......not stalling as much, better off the line, easier on the clutch, etc.

Not the tricounty ring, but the principal is the same, Shelljeep had one custom made that added 16 lbs for his 258.

As for the tricounty ring for the 4 banger, I just installed one recently. It now feels like it did when I was runnin 33's instead of the 35's it has, huge improvement. Back to taking off in high range without touching the gas pedal. Believe I paid 154 without shipping, steel prices have gone up in the last year or so. As for inspection plate interference, the limited instructions that come with it tell you what clearance to allow between the ring and block, mine needed no clearancing of any kind. Quick easy install, great improvement, and pretty cheap, go for it.

hay bootsnthejeep.....
why would you need a inerta ring with a 258??

i was able to lug mine down very low rpw when using the stock carb set up.

but now i have the mopar fuel injection and can lot even lug it to a stop. :nuke:

running a t18 with 6.3, a dana 300 stock 2.8,and 411 in the rear with 35 in tires.

when i get it back on the trail i have put in a 4.1 klune in the mix. :nuke: :nuke:

All motors that crawl need a heavier flywheel, it makes a huge difference. I have a little big block Buick 350 and it benefits significantly from a super heavy truck flywheel. The rotating mass is what keeps momentum going on any size of an engine, so just do it.

Are the the 258 and 318/401 flywheels are interchangable? There must be a Chrysler truck with a heavier flywheel.

I just installed mine while doing the Ax5 to Ax15 conversion. It's a good improvement.

No, the AMC engines are not Chrysler, no matter who owns them now.

They are all good little engines. The trannies on the other hand, now those are mostly trash now days. Chrysler just has issues in the tranny department.

Now that is pretty slick... Somone should take those pics and produce one for the 4.0L. If I could get it to chug better I would...
