: Spacers or custom ordered wheels

ok, here is the deal... I have done the searches, read the posts... and now I need to pull the trigger!

My fj40 is going to be just for fun but I want to be able to drive it on pavement to trails.

For tires I am going with 38.5 x 14.5 TSL Sx's.
For rims I was thinking about either going with rock crawlers or something similar.

Here is my dilemma: I can either go with spacers and get in on some of the great tire/wheel deals out there (full set of tires & rims for ~1,200) or I can get custom backspaced wheels & order the tires separate but then would need to get them mounted, balanced (if I am lucky due to the size of tire) etc.

wngrog: you have done both on Kate... has anyone else?

Is this just 6 of one, half dozen of another?

Nolen had spacers and now is getting custom backspaced rims (I think) Personally, I would go with the custom rims. Another set of bolts to loosen does not impress me..

Or you could just do it the right way and put some wider/strong axles under it. ;) :D:D

Forget the spacers and go with custom rims. I got my rims from RockStomper, good rims, custom backspacing at a good price, delivered to my door.

Why?
I have had very good success with that exact tire combo on my 40...

but you're a lot easier on your rig than me.

Yeah the cruiser axles can be made to to with stand a lot, I am just saying for the same amount as spacers and or custom rims there are other options out there to get a wider stance.

Do the wheels.

I did the spacers because I did not know if I would like the extra width. I wanted a reversible option in case it was too wide.

I tried them and I liked the extra width so I bought wheels with the extra BS and I sold the spacers at a $70 loss.

It was worth the $$ in case I hated the extra width.

One thing for sure is that when I torqued the www.performancewheel.com spacers like they said, I literally broke 2 13/16 thin wall Craftsman sockets removing them.

THey were NOT coming off....

what backspacing should I go with -- I do not want it to rub but want to be kind to the rest of my 40...

why did you not just stick with the spacers?

Well at the time I was thinking they would be a hassle having to take the tires off to check them periodically.

I just wanted the wheels without the thought of a spacer that might come loose.

Little did I know they set up like concrete if you follow the instructions Performace Wheels tell you.

cool. i was just curious. i plan to get a set of 1" spacers for my front to keep the 42's out of the springs. i just wanted to make sure that you didn't have a problem with yours.

2.5" backspacing is what I plan to go with, running true beadlocks - right now leaning towards Allied Wheel.

Save your money on balancing. Pick up 5 golf balls for each tire and toss them inside. This is a trail rig, not a speed demon. Yer just gonna tear off the wheel weights anyways.

Mine have 2.5 " BS, love them ! especially with SOA it's a lot more stable on the road, better off road as well. Everyone I know who's run with spacers has eventually gotten rid of them. Because of broken or loose studs, etc.

Yeah, but the second you get into different axles you are into a LOT more money...

Making a D44 front work well costs $$

My rims are 2" BS true beadlocks. It helped a lot...
