For the past two weeks now, I have been trying to find the source of this pestering clicking noise that emits somwhere from the front driver side of my TJ when I turn. The Jeep has to be rolling and turning to hear this noise. It sounds like tin hitting some thicker part of steel. I tried to replace the brake pads with new ones, that wasnt it. I pulled out the hub bearings, that wasnt it. I checked the U joints in the driver side axle shaft , they had no play in them at all. The only thing I can think of is that it might be the little plastic dust cover that plugs the d30 tube? I have tried most everything, has anyone else come across this? If so, what was the problem?

I have had all kinds of werid noises and problems,,, Just never that one.

The biggest problem I had with the 30 was the left wheel bearing assembly had severe play. Replace. cost 100 bucks. advance auto for a lifetime warranty. Keep your box and receipt. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

hummm.....i check the bearings, but I didnt exactly know what to look for. They seamed fine to me. What tiped you off that yours were going bad?

When I jacked up the front end. With the tire on. Lift up and down on the tire if it moves its bad.

one hand on top and one hand under the tire.
Shake it and see if it moves. The bearings have a nasty habbit of wearing out rapidly.

Mine go quicker cause i drive on the road alot and every left turn causes the front left tire to get some big air. When the tire lands it chirps. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> I like it. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Check for pebbles in behind the brake rotor dust shield. They can get caught up and lodged behind the rotor and come loose in turns <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0">
May also check control arms for looseness, may be when you take pressure off of them (Left turn) they tend to rattle..

Does it have a lift on it? If it does then I might have a good chance on the control arms coming loose. I have the tera arms and they like to come loose all the time and it makes a clicking sound when you take off from a start and on turns from a dead stop. I might be a good thing to check.

whens the last time the u jionts were changed. just cause they have no play doesnt mean they arent going bad. and ya might as well change them before they do go bad and take your axle shaft with them when they explode

have you checked your front drive shaft. the cv's on them are notorious for going out and they will make a clicking sound when they do.i would check that because they can be messy if they freeze up going down the road. my .02 Gary

hummm.... all of these sound like good places to look. I do have a 4 inch tera lift with uppers and lowers on it with a CV kit..... I didnt think of the lowers being loose. I will deffinitly take a good look at that in the morning before I go on my 45 min. drive to college. I am fairly certain its not my u joints as this is a 2000 TJ, but I am hard on it. Well, since I saw you and talked to you on the way to school today, and you figured out what it was... you BOOB... no biggie right? Hey, we're going to the off road expo on saturday the 6th.. you are coming.. hahahah Just thought Id let you know ahead of time LOL.

So what did it end up being

It ended up being something with his lower control arm. Not sure what though, I havent talked to him today!

TERA arms are notorious for needing lots of grease.

Well, it would appear that the problem was actually the control arms being ever so slightly loose. I tightened them up and the noise is gone. Thanks to all that helped...because that was really anoying.

That is the same problem i had with my tera arms. Does anyone know if you can use lock washers or lock tight or something to keep them tight. <IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0">

I used new bolts and an Ingersol Rand 1/2 inch drive impact to get mine tight. And that was before the long arm kit.

so far the long arm kit came loose 3 times.

Always the same bolt too??? Left rear crossframe mount bolt. It was soooooo loose that I could tighten it with my fingers.
