Looking for those that are running an Atlas II in a v8 equipped rig weighing at or around 5K.

Looking at using a Atlas Highlander in this
Team USA (http://www.northern4x4.com/events/OBC/team_usa.htm) http://www.northern4x4.com/events/OBC/front1.jpg
Last years race destroyed a Dana 300 in several ways.. So an upgrade is in order. Made the mistake last yeat of not asking around about failures with our chosen drive line choices.. So thought for this year I'd ask...
SO who is running an Newer Atlas, how is it holding up, whats broke?

Have no idea but I'm installing one this winter. The Tera Gears did not last, went through two sets in two seasons. My adapter is in and every thing looks big!:)

Yes, we took all the teeth off the Tera Low gear set too. http://www.superford.org/registry/users/208/144/PICT0010.JPG

the atlas will be alot stronger than the tera equipped d300.

We will find out. My chassis will weigh 5500+ 454 3.8 atlas,32 spline F/R, rockwells 44 cut boggers and a real heavy right foot. I wish I had a better answer for you.

P.S. Frankie Finland is one slow moving mofo.

I know of a few guys with big blocks, 38.5-42" tires and atlas, it holds up fine.

You will blow an axle first tho. Get the 32 sp output one and you will be OK.

SO nobody has broke an Atlas? If so, what broke? and what powertrain/drive train were you running?

i belive the only failures around here were from people not geting the big outputs. i think there have been 2 or 3 ouputs broken by the snort guys..

Was that the standard output for the 300 or the heavy duty?

Haven't broke mine yet. I have the small front output.(32spline was not available in 1998) I have broke four 35 spline 60 axles, np435 output shaft, NP435 idler gear twice. BBC 454 w/ Merlin heads, hybrid injection 8-32# injectors. NP435, 4.3 atlas, 60's with 4.88 and 39.5 boggers/ now 42 tsls. 5180# on the scales no driver but with spare axles and small tools. Hope that helps.

Yes, it does.. Piece of mind is starting to build.. While I know nothing is bomb proof,,, I do not wnat to go half way around the world again, only to have the TC destruct, and THEN<<<<<<<<<<<<<hear people say,, "Oh ya, them things do that all the time,,,,," Gee thanks....

I would also worry about the rear HP 9. That is the logical next thing that will break when you get the atlas. Maybe it won't, but the 8.8" RC R&P in the rear is WAY weaker than a std. D44. 36's, low gearing, 5.0 power, and the ARB are going to be hard on it, for sure. Hope it holds up for you, it might be fine, just a thought.

I have no doubts with the HP9" It has proven to be tough for our uses, and the drivers style. But thanks

I've been considering this myself, I've got 2 D300's, 1 to build with Tera 4:1, & one for a spare, but for the price of building one or 2?, I could certainly afford an atlas, I'm not saying that I've got that kind of change laying around, but somewhere down the road its certainly on my wishlist!

Jerry Cantrell broke the front output shaft on his at ttc.
Didn't have the 32er.

I run the Highlander behind an LT-1 with 42's with no probs....I second the worry of the RC 9 WAY before the Atlas.

This is good to hear, not that you exploded your gears, but Tera claims that they do not have a problem and or if they did it’s been fixed. I was assured of this when I received my second set. They made it out to be that myself and a friend, whom is on his third set where the only ones that have had a problem. Don’t get me wrong; it may only be the D18 and D20 gears that have this problem (oh yea your not supposed to 4wheel). We installed a set in a friends D300 and he has not had a problem (yet).

Atlas II is the answer!

Is it just me, or have I heard a LOT about Tera 4Low gears breaking, including the D300. I have a buddy, who after the post mortem of the jeep discovered, it was indeed the tera low gears that failed. That lead to this:

http://www.timbertamers.org/runs2002/libertyroll/mac%20HDTemporary%20Itemsnsmail27.jpg

Climbing a hill, lost his rear axle, started sliding back down the hill (zero traction to begin with) did somewhere between 4-7 rolls before hitting a tree, landing on wheels and getting it stopped.

No, we had asked Tera before the race about issues with our chosen TC.. They had nothing but good things to say, and never told us about the known issues with thier gears, the dana 300 gears and the dana output.. So we went to AU fat and happy thiking we had built a strong rig.. WRONG....

After reading this post I'm swinging away from the Tera Low gears. I'd rather save for an Atlas than rebuild my rig again!!

No shit...

In my buddies case, I heard they were in there for 2.5 years, but... itwas obviously a defect issue if TeraLow is sending out replacement parts.

It makes me THAT much happier going Atlas and not 4:1ing the np231.

A buddy of mine runs 35s and is the gentlest driver on the gas I've yet met. He's on his 3rd tera low gear set. Hardly runs any rock, either.

.http://www.snort4x4.com/trips/calrocs/march/ROCS027.JPG You can see my front output shaft still in the yoke! was in the victorville calrocs. shift forks where cracked/bent and had a couple broken bearings. bought mine in 98 when the larger output was not available.... Do the up grade when you buy it... it's alot cheaper. trust me.

The only breakage I've heard about around here, is with the guys that are running the 32 spline upgrades. They are busting 1350 yokes, and now you can't get the U-bolt style yokes anymore only the strap and bolt kind! I guess AA is taking Dana's lead and not making them so they can sell more yokes when the damn bolt screws break off in the yokes:mad3: I hope someone starts to produce good 1350 U-bolt yokes soon, JESS here's an idea for you!
