: About to start on my rockers...few questions

Hopefully this weekend I'll finally be able to work on my rocker panel, but before I go out and buy the steel, here is my idea.

Get some 1/2inch 3x3 angle iron. Bolt that to the body using the holes from the factory sidesteps and maybe adding one or two more, and then sandwiching the body with another piece of the same angle iron...which will help the bottom lip from bending up.
Sound good?

I noticed that alot of people use recessed bolts...how & what do you use to drill the holes for the bolts? I can't remember what Nolen uses but I think they are recessed. Also, on the front do you cut the angle iron to fit with the contour of the front fender?
Plz post pics of how you guys mounted yours...trying to get this done since plans for christmas break are to go to Las Cruces :D

1/2" is way overkill! 1/4 will work fine and be plenty stout.

I have to agree with high5 on this. I used a lot of 6mm (~1/4") on my '80 body, including the rockers, and man that'not something you bend easily...
I welded them onto the outer part of the body, inside and outside, and then welded the floor on the rocker. I left the inside part of the body just hanging ther, with a piece of 2mm steel welded along the open side in order to strenghten it a bit. The rocker angle is the main support for the F & R body mounts, as well as the door pillars anyway.
My worked involved a wee bit more than just adding rockers though... :D

my '75was a little more complicated, although it involved no welding but riveting. It also has a removable alum. floor on square tubing...

Here is a link to how I did my rockers.

It's not the best pic of the rockers, but you get the general idea.

I cut about 3 inches off the bottom of the rockers & front fenders. I used 2" angle iron (1/4" thick) and angled the front to match the angle of the fender & angled the back to match the wheel opening/flare. Attached to the body with 6 grade-5 hex head bolts. I figured I wouldn't need to recess in the bolts because I'm lazy & they're easy to replace if I shear off the head on a big rock.

Held up pretty well so far.

doh...must have been :smokin: when I put 1/2inch...I meant 1/4.
Using 1/2 is almost like making a step and I just took those off:rolleyes:
I'm not to the stage to cut my rockers or go as far as frnch jackass and cut everything off, and this will be a weekend project not a yearly one...just got done with that :flipoff2:
Eric, thats a very nice cruiser...your cruiser just added the blue/black color schem to my red/black one in a few years...first will be the v-8 though :flipoff2:
Thx

Joseph,

First off, your PM box is full. Delete the inbox AND the sent items.

Second, just do like Junkyard and Eric did above. Mine is 3x3 and I used standard grade bolts.

I SMASH the shit out of mine often and I have not bent them yet.
