I took it to the ref today for my swap - passed everything except the check engine and the code reader plug. I had to have gotten a wire wrong, any guesses?

you do have both plugs correct? also your engine may not have had a check engine light that year.

88' Mass air 5.0

That is the only thing keeping me from making it legal :(

Only thing I can think of is I am using a manual computer with an auto harness

i dont know man, but you should have 2 plugs for a scan tool to hook up too. also i dont think 88 mustangs had a check engine light. but im not 100% you might want to try asking the guys on the fordnatics mailing list. www.fordnatics.com

Not sure, but, I think the 88 did not have a check engine light.
Still able to read codes, but many Fords needed a cheap scan tol or brains and a DVOM to retrieve codes in the early years.

Do you have power AND ground to the proper terminals?

88 would be a non-electric tranny AOD not EAOD...
So, comp. should not matter.

88 CA if that matters, Mass Air engine

I'll double check the power and ground but odd that it runs great - just no codes.

The referee required the light and the plugs to work, I will double check with him on the light but the plug should work - and according to my wiring diagram there is a check engine light and I wired it according to the diagram - whatever is causing the plugs not to work is also causing the light not to work

on my 1988 harness there is no check engine light (at least for the 5.0) I chased all the wires and the check engine light is for the other motors. If you have the schematics check them, if not let me know I'll scan them and send them to you.

yep I have them, and reduced it to this:

http://www.rcrc4x4.com/TechReports/MoPower/wiring/wiring.htm

they are the ford wiring schematics, there was a wire from the computer for it, computer should send a ground to it
