: Frame mods?
Urban Wheeler 11-14-2010, 08:47 PM Been thinking and poking around a bit lately, that perhaps I may want to either construct a new frame, or narrow my stock frame. I think it would help to package a 4 link front with struts or C/Os.
There's a lot of chassis building tech, not so much on frame building and modifying.

JetFxr 11-14-2010, 09:33 PM If you look at the width of the motor and Tcase I think you will see the Scout frame is narrow already. I am talking ScoutII, There is barely room for a good exhaust system, I have looked at chopping of the front and rear frame rails for coilovers. But then again that would depend on the wheelbase. Just my thoughts because my Scout is linked and there is not much room between the rails, you should look at narrowing it outside the frame rails if anything.

I think it would make a lot of sense to pinch the frame in the front and back if you were planning on C/o's. my front co/s are almost vertical because of the frame width relative to the width of the 60 and the lower mounts are on the inner c's.
like others said, the t-case region is a bitch. A 205 won't lay flat if centered. heck, the stock 20 barley clears a pinched down 2" exhaust pipe.

That's what I am thinking. I've set the struts on the axles about where they would go, and they would be pretty close to the frame and damn near vertical.
I know guys who have chopped the frame at the firewall and replaced it with tube, so I think I'll go that way.

That would be easier.
In hindsight, I wish I had just started fresh with tube rather than making the frame work. Would have been time ahead I think.

I like the idea of the narrow rails in the front to allow a narrower axle and will allow more steering angle with large tires and wider in the back to allow for a larger shallower tank. If you use 2 inch wide tubing you are gaining a couple of extra inches clearance right away. Ive been checking out threads with CJ's with GM LS series engines. With a CJ outer width of 27" in the front you can still fit a planatary winch between the rails. I figure it can also make for a cleaner package by incorperating body mounts with sliders and cage supports.
Im really scratching my head about raising, or lowering the horizontal section along the engine and how it would better adapt to a link suspension.

When I was working on the front suspension my friend kept commenting on how wide the frame is. IIRC the inner width on my frame is 29 inches, and you say a cj outer frame width is narrower...
I am sure there is a way to package a double triangulated 4 link in the front and around an sbc. Looks like I will have to go back to reading in the Jeep forum for awhile.
danny Israel 11-16-2010, 08:22 PM The scout frame is 27 inches wide from inside to inside I set my tj based frame reals to 30 inches from inside to inside the reason for this is I did not wont to by headers. and I'm using full width axles.:smokin:

ChiScouter 11-18-2010, 02:32 AM Matt don't you already have a cage built and the engine mounted? If links are proving too difficult put leafs on it or junk it and start over.

I really wanted a double triangulated 4 link up front, but I couldn't get around the motor with the link length I wanted. Plus, my struts will be very close to the frame, and I don't want them to rub. Yes I have been thinking of putting leaves under it for now.
