: Caddy for a tow rig?

I know it sounds retarded.

But I have just jumped into some mods on my rig that will require the purchase of a tow rig. I am a Pooooo man. I can barely afford a rig and a daily, let alone the addition of a tow rig. SO,...my tow rig is gonna have to replace my daily (gotta sell my daily to swing it).

Pre smog is what I am shooting for. I will more than likley pick up a pre 73 3/4 or 1 ton truck BUT,.... a mid 60's caddy with air bags would be sweeeeet :D and would "BLING BLING" as a daily :D

I wouldnt think the big block would have a problem, and with a 400 and a hoped up axle and air bags,....why not?

Just an idea.

your $.02?

I'd have to imagine that the weight of the Caddy would be pretty good.

Big Caddy's & Impalas used to be the tow rig of choice for the Airstream crowd. I remember in my early days of mud racing a dude that pulled an F250 around with an LTD wagon.

BTW, I thought this was gonna be about a newer rig since I know a guy who used to use an Escalade as his tow rig :D

Got E-rated white walls? :D

Would probably be ok, as long as you stiffened up the suspension. bling bling.

Saw a pic once of an old Lincoln with the trunk lid removed, and a 5 wheel plate in the trunk. It was a 4x4 on like 35s.

I'm thinking a black '60s hearse on dubs and bags. Or, if you prefer, wide whites on 15s or 16s.

Wonder if you can fit a Cummins in one? :D

Let us know if you do it. I had actually considered the same thing. I was thinking it would be sweet to find an old convertible and add some air bags. The load rated tires are a good point, I hadn't thought about that.
Go for it! :D

Better yet, a convertable 65 Lincoln, you know the ones with suicide rear doors.:D

yeah I actually saw a pike's peak challenger tow his hill climb car out with a hearse with a 500 dual flows sounded mean and he had stripped everything out of the inside and he said lost something like 1300 lbs just doing that and he put an add a leaf on it and towed about 4500 lbs with it all day long. Only thing he said was gas mileage was sad at best (6-8 while towing 10-14 not towing) So yeah it would be cool for sure if you do it get some pics man!!

A HEASRE! :D

That would be COOOOL!

I am actually supprised that the idea is being met with enthusiasm. I thought it would be shot down with a bunch of "why!" and "thats stupid!" "buy a 1ton".

I am really thinking about it. I am half ass looking right now. I just may step up the search whith this new "pep talk".

I figure, I wheel a fricken station wagon, why not pull it with a passenger car?

no doubt, air bags, a good tranny cooler and properly (or closely) rated tires.

Don:

Go for it! Maybe one of those "load leveller" hitch set-ups would be a good idea - anyone on theis board ever use these things?? A double axle trailer with perhaps trailer brakes on both axles??

I pulled a 19 foot crownline with my 94 Impala SS. I had to put stiffer springs in the rear. They were from a cop car. Called 9C1 springs if you go to the dealer.

It pulled better than my buddies 3/4 ton suburban. I put a tranny cooler on it and it was fine. 2 trips over 500 miles each no problems. Never once did it do the tail wag on me.

belive it or knot, but there is a guy up here that made a low flat bed tow rig out of an eldorado. its front wheel drive etc, he hacked off every thing behind the drivers seat, then made a low flat bed about 8" off the ground! the thing is quite a site! any one that went to the monroe swapmeet about a month ago probably saw it.

Got a buddy that is a drag racer from the 50's til the 80's or so, he's got an 500cid eldo with the back cut off and another eldo axle mounted behind the stock eldo axle. He cut the back off just behind the rear 1/4 window, and extended the frame ? inches from there toward the stock rear axle, and welded on a pair of dual axle trailer fenders. Been that way since the mid 70's, kinda cool, club cab (sort of),front whee drive, huge engine, lots a torque , brakes on both rear axles and of course a caddy ride! maybe someone here knows him, has pics, his name is Dode Martin, NHRA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE and former part owner of DRAGMASTERS in Carlsbad ,Ca. Hmm....

1) Older car like he is talking weighs in at 5,000+lbs already. (About the same as a 1/2ton truck now days)

2) Wheelbase is about the same as a 1/2ton shortbox regular cab truck

3) Braking would be about the same

Tell me, what is your logic behind a truck being safer?

Not a Caddy, but I've seen it done with a Lincoln Mk V.

460, C6, FF 60

Worked nice.

a FF 9inch with disks would be cool too.

1/2 tons are grocery getters not tow rigs

wheel base still isn't that long

breaks mabey if the trailer was equiped too

now my tow rig weighs in at 19,000 lbs

wheelbase of 265"

600 hp 2050 ft lb torque mated to an 18 speed with 3.36 rears

so far Ive encountered 4-5 people on here that seam to be smarter than the average bear about towing

In principle, Ryan, I agree with you.
OTOH, it's not practical to expect everyone to have their own pet semi tractor, nor would I want 98% of poeple on this board to be piloting 80K down the interstate.
If you look at the big picture, a half ton surely isn't the best towrig, but it well might be the best compromise, and life is nothing but a series of comprimises.

Yea, that 500 was a workhorse, had a guy pass like I was standing still on Raton pass. I was empty and he was towing a 28' Airstream.

AgentOrange, he'll be towing a FJ55. Don't you think a semi would be a little overkill and a bitch to use as a DD?

I'd be less scared to be folowing a pickup towing anoter fourwheeler than a car pulling one. they make class III hitches for Camaros but would you want to folow one pulling a trailer of class III weight?

do what you have to do to get it done but safety first. Im not saying don't do it but think about better alternitives

Actually, the wheelbase on the Caddys, and things like '71-'76 Impala/Caprice, Buick LeSabre/Electra, Olds 88/98, Ponitac Bonneville/Safari is LONGER than a shortbed pickup. It's the same as a long-bed GM pickup - 133 inches.

I am positive about this, because I have multiple '71-'76 GM cars (I demo derby them), and multiple long-bed GM trucks (1-ton, 3/4-ton, 1/2-ton).

The '71-'76 GM sedans have coil spring rears, while the wagons have leafs. 1977 and newer all have coils. I'm not sure about 1970 and older.

I really like this idea for a bling bling daily driver/tow rig combo. :D

Later!
