BJ-75 sighting in Portland OR

On my way to work this AM I spotted a 70 series rig way up in traffic. After running over a few smaller cars and driving down the sidewalk I caught up to the guy. I am sure he thought I was an idiot, pointing at his rig and putting my hands up in question. The dude just kind of waved me off. This was an incredible dark green diesel BJ-75, short bed that looked custom. Ok I really had no idea what model it was, but I wrote down the OR plate # and run the sucker this AM. He has it registered as a 1989 Toyota PU, yet the vin is: JT5BJ75…. and so on. So I know this thing is a BJ-75. (non full floater though) So how do I bring one in to the states!!!!! Does anyone know the process on registering a vehicle in the US that was never sold in the US? I was thinking the owner of this rig just swapped titles with a regular Toyota PU, but it has a real BJ vin number. How do you do this!

BTW: Sorry no photos, did not have the dig. cam. with me. Oh and all our Oz friends ya I know this is fare game to rub in the fact we only got a few limited LC's in the states, and you guys got alot of the cool ones.

LMAO Helocat,
It was probably a mine truck with either a ENS (check out ENS-industrial.com) custom rear bed or some sort of fab job. To get it in since it wasn't road legal even in Canada you gotta do some creative fanagling and be able to sleep easy knowing that your truck is totally black market whether it's soomewhat legal or not. But cool truck nevertheless. If you do your homework and are medium / somewhat descrete then you are pretty safe, here's an example (but this is an HZJ75):

Anyone know this guy?

How are you running plates anyways Helocat? :rasta:

Here is the correct url for ENS. Don't bother contacting them. You have a better chance of nailing Britney Spears than getting a 79 series from ENS.

I can't remember his last name (early Alzheimer's, I think), but that's a dude named Chris, he used to be on the LCML way back when. He's also got a BJ70. Both Cruisers are of Canadian origin and their importation was as gray as a Navy toilet!

There are *many* different ways to import a non-US Cruiser into the country, from the very expen$ive 100% legal way to the darkest of dark grays, depending on what your tolerance for shadiness is and how deep your pockets are. What you *won't* find on this board or any others is the willingness to discuss this topic on an open forum, for obvious reasons.

To put it bluntly, it can be done, no problem. Just bring money, do your research, and above all, BE DISCREET....

Good luck and good hunting!

Henry,

Hmm discreet yes, shadiness well I guess that is part of the answer for dieselcruiserhead! (Not too shady I just know the system) I will need to sniff around.. got it though. Sometimes it is best to let things be gray.

I will have to send the guy with the BJ-75 a letter (DMV listed address of course) and see if I can talk with him. I will put it on some Cascade Cruisers letter head so he doesn’t think some state agent is trying to get his truck! Thanks for the info Henry…er I mean “Daffy Duck, Blue Fox or 007”.

I am thinking Oz Troopie!

Either that or $40G to by a stripped down, 7,000lb pickup truck with an industrial bed that they probably won't sell to you because you aren't a mining company, never mind getting it in the states. A friend on the diesel list (actually the brother of the guy who sold me my HJ60) is putting together a BJ75 using old mine cabs. Surprizingly the cabs and trucks aren't necessarily all over the place but if you look hard enough you can find them. There are a lot of mines in Canada still, including the largest exporter of asbestos in NA in St. George Qu and a ton on the west coast. I remember seeing a web page of a yard in Canada that had a few decent condition 70 sereis cabs. What I would do today just to insure a perfectly legal truck is build a 75 on a 45 chassis or some dialect. Just like I don't think I'd get a BJ or HJ60 again, I'd probably build my own next time.

BJ75 is old news...:flipoff2:
Down under they now have HDJ7x series...

Here in europe unfortunately no more 70 series are now imported. Forthcoming : just the crappy KDJ120 and the not-so-crappy HDJ100 with the :rainbow: IFS...

Who knows what then is J110 series landcruisers ???

Ask Rick D. to tell you the [extreme sarcasm] EXCELLENT [/extreme sarcasm] condition his mine truck was in. :p

helocat,

I too have seen that truck you speak of. I saw it twice, but never got to talk to the guy. both times were in southeast portland. It is very very sweet rig. why don't you just stalk the guy? you could always show up at his house, dress like a g-man and just plain demand to repo the truck since it's illegal, and bingo you would have it.
or at least get some pics for the board.

www.fourwheelauto.com, this guy has quite a few lines on LC's, he would probably even know about how to go about sending them on down your way.

The good ol' 1HZ is not complying to the emissions requirements anymore. There's a little rumor there could be some 1HD-FTE powered J7x imported again but people who believe this are faar too naïve IMO. I had a long talk with a TOYOTA rep. at the Paris Motor Show recenty, and I really didn't hear anything good...
"Yeah we want to sell SUVs cuz they are the fashion now... The real 4x4s is an outdated idea... no we don't think we're destroying TOYOTA's image of being such a great 4x4 manufacturer...
No we won't import an updated 70 series anytime soo, nor won't we sell a live axle 100 series, why bother..."

Today the KZJ90 is almost considered as a real4x4  My dad has one, I've driven 40 and 70 series, and I can tell you : the KZJ90 is far from being a real 4x4, though it's quite a damn good car...

As far as I'm concerned, I'm pretty happy with what I have right now ;) :flipoff2:

A friend of mine finds nobody who wants to buy a 230,000km HJ61 for $6500 in a very good shape apart a few dents... Something definately must be wrong in this country...
I feel terribly old-school today...

At the Stillwater Mine in Montana they use HZJ70s I believe. I'm certain that they were 6 cylinders and non turbo'd. They had OME suspension on them with 13 leaves in the rear. Basic white. They use them as tool trucks to drive into the mines and work on the underground equipment. They pack a lot of weight no them. Prior to getting the Cruisers they used some little Mazda diesel 4 door pickups. Maybe they were Mitsubishis? I can't recall now. Those had their tops chopped. The Cruisers they left alone, hardtops with tiny beds maybe 5 feet? I asked one of the guys how they purchased them. He was pretty tight lipped but said if I wanted one for an OHV he would order me one. It was something like 30-35k. It has been some years and the old memory is fading. After seeing the ENS beds on other trucks I'm pretty sure that is where they got theirs from. My friend told me that the mine is closed up. I have often wondered what happened to the Cruisers. They would not have been so rusty as it was platinum mine in a fairly dry climate.

Mark,

This place imports cruisers legally, but you better get on the waiting list now.
