Looking for opinions.

Ok, so I've decided to break the bank and buy an Atlas.
I had originally planned to put a crawl box (homebuilt) in front of it to get a crawl ratio well into the triple digits (in addition to keeping a stock lowrange for mild trails), but I ran into a big snag with my fuel tank being in the way.

Is the 4.3 low enough for you? or do you wish you had something additional with the manual trans?

I'm trying to decide if I should just go with the Atlas by itself, or if I should pursue getting that gas tank out of the way (a major PITA).

As of now, I don't plan to tackle anything more radical than the mild-to-moderate trails in JV, for example, but i'm afraid that might change after I get it installed.

NOT going to compete in any way, just recreational use.

Thanks.

I've got one, just installed... The new 4.3:1 gear reduction is SWEET!

I can crawl up stuff I couldn't before.... it'll satisfy my needs for a while, then I'll be looking for more. Probably a klune or similar in front of the atlas. But.... thats a few years away (I hope)

This is what I'm afraid will happen. I'm hoping to be able to protect myself from the mod bug for a little while, at least, but maybe thats wishful thinking :(

Assuming you are going to use a tranny with a granny low & somthing like 4.56's with 35" - 38" tires, the 4.3 is all you need. I'd say anything over 100:1 w/ 35's is fine.

I did'nt think there were any mild to moderate trails in JV.

it will be plenty for most trails, when you want more gearing(if you want more) I would swap in a real tranny, it will not only get you better gearing but also more strength

You don't need gears... you just need more Gas :flipoff2:

and maybe a 60

*OK WTF is up with the Reply button!?? Someone hack the link or something?

Test TEST

Now its working!???

OK gotta retype my damn post ARGH! WTF:mad:

Well, I haven't had any strength issues running the crappy 2.48 lowrange (just frying clutch), a deeper lowrange should make for even less strain on the trans. I'm not worried about its strength (I have no plans to swap engines), just the tall first is keeping the total ratio under 100 (around 70:1 or so) without the crawl box I had originally planned.

The 4.0L does have good torque even down around idle RPMs, though.

Maybe I'll look into putting a B2 tank in this thing, not sure yet.

Thanks for the responses so far.

Hopefully this works. Clicking "Save Changes" ....

I know rick over at explorerforum has the 4.3 atlas and he still stalls it everyonce in a while he has 4.56 in the diffs. I am pretty sure he is swaping a C5 in. I am gong the C5 route in a few weeks.

IMO 90:1 is a great ratio for 38" tires, you can have some wheelspeed to climb ledges and its still low enough to get trough the rocks.

I have 125:1 with the sm420 on 1st and 61:1 on 2nd. 125:1 is too low sometimes and the 61:1 is a bit fast, Im regearing to make it 155 and 78.

I wheel with a guy who has an atlas and a klune v and he never ever finds a use for the 470:1 combo :D
