Pic show the difference between the 5-86X and 5-297X style axle shafts. The 5-85x u-joint has the same cap size but uses an full external retaining ring.

Is anyone run this axle and u-joint found in a HD Dana 44 in a regular Dana 44?

Now, why doesn't a custom alloy axle shaft manufacture produce this shaft and run a heavy duty 5-86x u-joint? Just send me a set for the idea! :)

If ya scale the measure between the ears on the top shaft I get 4"ish.
The hole in a D44 knuckle is 3 3/8"
I see fitment issues.

BTW1 - sound familiar :D
BTW2 - Its more like a 3/4 external retaining ring :flipoff2:

BTW1 I'm sure it's been done, point me in the direction it sounds familiar.
BTW2, yeah. Just like a drive shaft clip.

This should fit, it;s the 282 that will not fit, pic below and link.

Whats the measurement across the yolks of the axle shaft that you wanna use??
If it will fit between ball joints, but not in the hole it's still doable.
All ya gotta do is install the axle shaft before the knuckle.
Bust a shaft, pull the knuckle. Its not realy that much more work that way cause your 7/8 the way there already if you gotta change an axle anyways.(2ball joints & a tie rod).

Second though.....wont work that way, lower ball joint nut keeps it from hapnin'.

 Just whan I thought I had 'er figured

they fit. I just upgraded my front inners and outers b/c I exploded my stock joints and the joint installed is the new one. My garage installed the axles and I'm not sure where he bought them but they are very cool. I can take a pic and email you if you'd like.

Sup with the dis-colouration on the inside yoke?? Did ya weld it to a different shaft or something??
