--------NOW AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER--------
Shipments begin Mid December

THE ONLY HIGH STEER ARM YOU'LL EVER NEED!Whether you are just starting out with crossover steering or going full hydro, these arms are meant to handle it all and GIVE YOU OPTIONS AS WELL! Paired with our optional Knuckle Bolt Kit, the exclusive design of these arms not only allow you to set how you attach your steering links but where as well and increase overall knuckle and steering strength at the same time. Check out the diagrams below of just some of the steering linkage mounting options.

Rather than use the factory kingpin springs, the knuckle is held together with a springless design that uses a set screw to adjust the torque required to hold together. This eliminates some of the slop that is commonly found in axles that receive moderate offroad abuse. The hardware for a springless conversion is included and consists of a 3/4" set screw, jam nut, grease zerk, .250" thick load washer, and upper kingpin bushing for each arm.

Studs and nuts are not included and are available for purchase separately here. Arms are machined blank to allow custom tie rod and draglink locations. Optional drilling for 3/4" bolt or reaming for GM 3/4 ton TRE's (commonly referred to as 1-tons) available.

The Knuckle Bolt Kit is available separately and comes with a 3/4" grade 8 bolt, a 3/4" all- steel mechanical locking nut, and a 1.25" outer diameter, .250" wall sleeve. The sleeve is machined to allow direct contact and proper mislaignment for a 3/4" rod end (heim) ball. The Knuckle Bolt hole is NOT machined into the high steer arm, and the customer will be required to align and drill their own hole in both their knuckle and high steer arm with a 3/4" drill bit.

NOTE: Wheels with extremely large backspacing should not be used in conjunction with this high steer arm. These arms have been confirmed to fit 17", 4.75" backspaced wheels. Will NOT work with factory backspaced H1 wheels. The bulge on the side of the arm measures 1.25" from the spindle mounting surface. Please confirm you have adequate space between arms and wheels/tires before purchasing.

FEATURES:

•Optional Knuckle Bolt Kit puts full hydro in DOUBLE SHEER
•Crossover Steering or Full Hydraulic Steering compatible

whats the purpose of the fold down the top of the arm?

Artec
11-29-2010, 11:40 AM
3 reasons---1.weight savings, 2. Allows use of standard length set screw for the springless conversion, 3. If customer wanted to add a 1 inch spacer underneath, they can still use the same studs instead of buying longer studs.

In order to allow both the 9 degree angle and the ability to line up with the stock knuckle and keep the material thick enough to not loose any strength, 1.25" material needed to be used from the beginning. Rather than keep that big block over the studs where its not needed, ordering a longer set screw, and prevent possible use of a 1 inch spacer if a customer desired, it was milled down. Solidworks simulations showed no effect on strength.

Here is a quote from Azrckcrawler of Built to Grind fame on what makes the Artec arms so special.
A couple of us have been running hacked together setups utilizing 1018 steering arms and tying the arm into the stock tie rod hole. The concept in my mind is proven. In 6 years I have not had any broken studs or knuckle failures but have seen plenty of failures on the trail with the typical high steer arm just bolted to the top of the knuckle. Our buddy Chad was busting studs on his rear steer axle so often he carried an easy out kit and a cordless drill onboard for trailside stud extraction. Once he tied the steering arm into the stock TRE hole his problems went away.

Not only does this system allow double sheer on the heim joint, it completely reinforces the whole knuckle and helps prevent stud sheering. Mounting like this distributes more force to the knuckle itself and less force on the studs. Not only that, it allows total customization of how high you mount your ram. Most high steer arms are too high when compared to the location you want to mount your ram but because thats where the high steer arm is, you are forced to put the ram that high. Not so with the Artec Ultimate High steer arms. Simply cut the sleeve between the knuckle and high steer arm to your desired length to get a perfect height. If you look around at many of the KOH buggy builds happening right now including the 4405 Phoenix Land use buggy, they are attaching their steering in this method but heavily modifying normal arms to accomplish this. Here's the graphic again that shows just of few of the mounting options available with the Ultimate Dana 60 High Steer arms from Artec Industries. I basically just described the first two graphics on the left. Of course this only scratches the surface of options if you consider all the heights you can mount a heim on the Knuckle Bolt kit and even mounting heims under the high steer arms for crossover and so on.

I didn't see anywhere that mentioned what the distance or range of distance was from the center cap(setscrew) to the hole for the rod end. For example: some arms are 6" or 7" or 8" or whatever depending on your hydro setup.

Speaking of FREEZE, a huge cold weather system moved through the western US and delayed our production of these somewhat. Everyone who ordered these should get a tracking number once shipped, provided the email they provided was correct.

Shipped out a large number of high steer arms on Friday. All those with arms that did not have any of the optional holes or machining should have received tracking numbers via email. If your arms had crossover steering holes drilled in them, it'll probably be a few more days as we wait for a machine to free up. Six hole arms with keyway are going to take some more time, unfortunately. If you have concerns about your order, please contact us.

EDIT: My machinist just opened up a machine and is drilling the optional holes today. As soon as they are done, they will ship out. Some of you may receive tracking numbers tonight.

On our way back to Hammertown after watching Backdoor, I spotted AZrckcrawler's rig and took some photos of it. He had been beating on it all week and even told me that the steering arms were the only bolts that hadn't loosened all week. When the guys from Built to Grind say they have been beating on the rigs all week, you know that they are giving those parts the best real world (ab)use you could possibly ask for. Watch the video to see Azrckcrawler (ab)using his stuff and making a sweet save.

Its Saturday afternoon or I'd call but looking for a little insight on what is going wrong here. Anybody drilled their arms yet?

I dropped off the arms and my 79 Ford knuckles to be drilled out and something is not lining up right.

They arms are bolted to the knuckles and the machinist is using the stock hole as his reference in drilling the Artec arm.

Well as you can see from the pictures we are going to have a problem, and thats with a 5/8 drill. A 3/4 hole is gonna eat right through the side of the arm.

The stock knuckle does not look bent. And it would have to be 1/2" or so off. And I dont have a comparison of the other arm/knuckle on the drill as he wanted to show me before he took it off. Being a weekend he was reluctant to set up the other side today for me.

Hmmm glad I read this thread, was about to pull the trigger on a set...

What's the word on Ford knuckles?

I can't go true hi-steer on mine due to frame clearances and I can't just set on top of the stock steering arm due to interference with the dif cover so these look to be perfect way to get my steering somewhere in between...

Looking forward to an answer...

Sean, again sorry for the inconvienences. Can you still check the other side knuckle and high steer arm to see if the problem just lies with that knuckle that was put on the machine? I don't need it to be setup in the vice and machine or anything, just put the arm on the knuckle and see if it looks like the hole placement will be generally in the same place.

We're looking to source that year axle here locally to see if the problem is specific to that year axle. Original calculations placed the hole more inward towards the center of the high steer arm. Whatever we find, we'll make sure to take care of those who are running into issues even if it means machining a custom arm to match their needs. We will work our hardest to resolve this issue quickly so that Ford owners don't have to hold off ordering.

Prototype testing was done on Solid aftermarket knuckles and we have confirmed that they work on all OEM Chevy and OEM Dodge knuckles, as well as aftermarket Reid Racing (both Ford and Chevy versions), and Solid Knuckles. I am also looking into custom machining the keyway for Crane knuckles as well.

Nate, I took a look today and it looks the same on both sides to me. That is, the nothing looks bent or out of place on either knuckle.

It almost appears that if the 'nub' portion was extended rearward it might work. But without some more measuring you might have an issue with the sidewall thickness after the hole is opened up to 3/4".

Heres two pictures I took today. They arent perfect as the perspective is off a little but you get the idea. Even the picture I took at the machinists looked like the drill was a little off but its really my camera angles.

Got the new arms in and will be sending back the old ones once I test fit everything.

Question; can I assume that wheel backspacing tolerances have not changed with the new ford arm. Still able to accept a wheel with less than 4.75" bs????? Please advise ASAP.

Artec
04-15-2011, 08:25 AM
In order to accomodate the change in location of the stock TRE on the Ford knuckle, we did have to add .300 to the buldge on the side of the arm. That puts the back spacing to roughly 4.5 instead of 4.75.

For those who'll be at the Silverstate 300, you'll see a bunch of these arms being used by Ultra4 racers. Glad to provide those racers the best and strongest arms on the market.

Of course, you don't have to be a racer to use these. These will help drastically reduce chance of stud sheer on any knuckle, on any vehicle with a front kingpin dana 60.

figured I should update. I got my new arms in, and since Artec had my knuckles this time I expect everything to go smoothly. I dont have time to put it together for a few weeks though.

Just wanted to thank Artec for taking care of me after the fact. They could have left me(and others hanging) but in the end they made it right and I'm happy.

Thanks,
Ben

In order to drill this hole I would need to have the knuckle here to determine where that precise hole location would be.

Theres a really good reason we don't drill the hole location that is directly over the stock location ahead of time. Every knuckle from the factory has a variation of where that location is on the knuckle. We've seen even on the same axle hole locations that vary up to 1/8". While that might not seem much, in steering, things should be very precise to reduce wear and wallowing out.

Additionally, you need to drill out your knuckles too, and depending on if you drill them out at the precise angle to match to our premade hole, it probably won't fit.

Its why every arm needs to be made to fit the knuckle its attaching to. We know it is more work, but its worth it to never have to worry about your high steer arms sheering studs, breaking knuckles, shearing heim bolts, etc. Its a proven system but it just requires a little more work.

For Reid Racing knuckles whose tolerance on the location is extremely precise, we have that location and can provide that hole drilling.

That said, what knuckles do you have?

We've had a lot of people ask lately what to torque everything to when tightening the arms down. There isn't an exact torque spec but I'd say 80-100 ft/lbs on the nuts for the studs. The spring elimination set screw is tightened based on feel. You should be able to move the knuckle back and forth by hand but with some resistance. You don't want it to be sloppy and moving very freely or really hard to move back and forth either.

Some manufacturer's give a lbs resistance recommended. I use a fish weighing hook when I set this kind of thing up (but I'm a redneck so...) Can you tell me how many pound's you'd recommend by this method? Let me know when you get back from Walmart from buying that scale :p

They are probably accurate enough but I don't have their hole location so predrilling them wouldn't be available. If you have access to a drill press, it's not too difficult. Here is a link to an install thread that'll help. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=987968

Will these clear an H2 wheel?

17x9, with 5.625" back spacing...

We haven't tested H2 wheels but most likely not.
Wheels with extremely large backspacing should not be used in conjunction with this high steer arm.

Yes it has to add the $25 to the cart for the GC to be worth anything when you redeem it, but it also simultaneously discounts the value of the GC from the total order, so your total would be the total of just the parts you are ordering.

If they are recentered H1s with 4.75" or less BS, they should work just fine.

Machining a really large batch of these right now to keep up with demand from the huge sale. Thanks for all the orders.

These really are the ULTIMATE high steer arms. Basically eliminate stud sheer issues and allow double sheer mounting anywhere between the stock location and the high steer. We know not every build is the same so why use other high steer arms that force your joints to mount in a set location?

FYI, if anyone is looking for an instant quote, our website will have the same prices that we would quote. Its a little difficult to quote when there are several options to choose from and the quote request doesn't include those. We don't mind doing it but for the quickest, most accurate quote, just add the products you want to your shopping cart, enter the pirate4x4 coupon, and enter your zip code in the calculate shipping field. That's exactly what I do when I give a quote.

ONLY TODAY AND TOMORROW REMAINING FOR THE SALE. ACT NOW!

will do on the pics..

I've been on the fence about your front full hydro mount and would love to have it and it would possibly make my life a tad simpler, as it looks like it locates the ram nicely. Also I have the Trail Gear kit and since you don't state that TG ram fits along with the extra $$$ I decided not to buy it and monkey with it. I know where there's a will there's a way, but my will is slipping these days ....chris

I hope you have it in stock, as i just bought it and would love to have it by the weekend if possible. I guess my will to fab up a new mount since the TG one won't work(toyota set up vs '85 ford dana 60) and I need more tube and plate is less than my will to buy your ram mount and I'll adapt the mounts for the TG ram if they don't line up---chris

PM on its way.

FYI to everyone. If you'd like the most immediate quote, we have it built right into our shopping cart. Simply add the products you'd like in the shopping cart. Then enter pirate4x4 in the coupon section and hit go. Then enter your zip in the shipping calculator. That's all we do when you send you back a quote. Its very accurate and the shipping won't change from the calculator to the actual checkout like some systems do.

I don't mind doing quotes but usually you'll know your answer within a couple seconds rather than waiting for us to reply. Also, I've included quick links to our most popular product in the signature below so you'll be able to access our products quickly.

just want to say thanks for getting me the ram mount so quick last week--I got it installed this weekend and it's all painted up and looks great--of course I did some modifications to it to fit the Trail Gear DE ram I'm using and for my panhard bar(no room on a willys to do things normal), but all in all a super great product--thanks again.....chris
