Im considering getting a cherokee w/ the AW4 and 4.0L and need to know what I need to regear the axles to to run 35s? I was thinking 4.56? I know its probably a basic question but im more of a toy guy getting into the realm of jeeps. Thanx guys.

What would bring it back to stock specs?

equivalent would be 4.6, so you should definetly go with 4.88s or 5.13s, but that is a pretty small pinion, what axles you running?

stock specs is irrelevant

and its not a small pinion for a 44.....

can't run that combo in stock axles anyway, and since you are considering 35's.....

you should be thinking about 44's someday soon.

4.88's will go in his stock axles

5.13's would be a better choice but would require an axle swap

if you go through all that 35's will be too small you will want 38's then 5.38's

its a vicious cycle

if it's a Dana30+35 4.88 would be the max possible. But 35's on a 35 is asking for trouble anyways :p

A dana 30 RC front with one piece shafts and 297x joints
A ford 8.8 rear,
with 4.88 gears is ok for 35s,

with lockers your may have trouble wth the 30, so dont gass it and turn on rocks:D

The front axle is a 30 and the rear is a 44. I plan on running ARB to both. What did '87 cherokees have for stock gearing anyways? 4.10?

you could let a Jeep dealer run your VIN, but to be totally sure put your rear end up on stands and turn the wheels one full rotation and count the number of rotations on the driveshaft

if its a stock 44 from an xj, should be 3.55 gears
