Just leave it. When flat towing a vehicle w/a locking column, you put the key in and turn it enough to unlock the column.

A scout may not follow very well. Flat towing relies on having some positive caster so that the front wheels do what they are supposed to. My cj2a used to flat tow perfectly until I put in a scout d44, then it wouldn't follow - it was a perfect excuse to buy a trailer;)

flat-towing a vehicle with a locked steering wheel will be KILLER on parts, and be a scary proposition.. it won't work at all, unless tearing your tires apart is your idea of a good time.

I had one at one time. I put on a tow bar and pulled it from Pa to Florida. No problems. I just stopped once and a while and checked to see if the bearings were hot.

Make sure your bearings are all well lubed;) And if your scout has the D18 tcase I'd consider disconnecting the rear driveshaft if you are towing long distances.

Chief: This is going to be a academic subject in BC as flattowing without brakes on the vehicle being towed is mostly illegal, and you will get stopped.

"Tow Bar Brake Requirements

Motor Home and Towed Motor Vehicle

If the towed motor vehicle has a gross vehicle weight of less than 2000 kg. (4400 lbs.) and is less than 40% of the gross vehicle weight rating of the motor home, brakes and co-ordinated brake control are not required.

Commercial Vehicle With GVWR over 5500 kg. (12100 lbs.) and Towed Motor Vehicle

If the aggregate weight of the combination does not exceed the GVWR of the commercial vehicle brakes are not required on the motor vehicle being towed.

Other Combinations

If the combination is not included in the two situations outlined above, brakes are required on all wheels of the motor vehicle being towed in the same manner as trailer brake requirements.

In B.C.I have been stopped and followed to a weigh scale twice when flat towing the Runner behind my F-550. I am legal because the GVW of my truck is 17500#, with the Runner and truck not weighing over that. Alberta plates help as well.
