: Ok, Ghetto Fab...
Josh 89XJ 11-07-2002, 01:55 AM Inspired by the recent influx of ghetto fab posts around here, I was thinking about some of the shit that I threw together for the sake of wheeling for a day or getting it back on the street for work in the morning back when I only had one vehicle. So, post up boys. What kind of ghetto fab have you pulled that was supposed to be "temporary" until you could replace it? Most of us have run some ghetto fabbed crap at one time or another, so hop down off the high horse, own up to it, and post pics if you've got them. :flipoff2:
Some of mine:
Like I said in Sean's post, I ran out of time regearing my front end and needed to drive to work in the morning. As a temp ghetto job I drove it with no pinion and a bunch of rags and duct tape covering the hole.
Snapped the clutch pedal clean off (don't ask...) and ended up driving around town looking for parts over the weekend, shifting "by feel" the whole time.
Driving around town in front wheel drive with no rear driveshaft and a pop bottle duct taped to the output housing on the 231 to keep the oil in.
Currently the dash is torn apart and there is a rat's nest of wires running all over the place. I'll fix it this weekend (yeah, right)

I dont think anyone is proud enough to take pictures of their bailing wire and bubble gum :)
I really meant to take pics of my welded-on crankshaft sprocket but I forgot. If I have to take it apart again I will.
Damn thing works though
CheapXJ 11-08-2002, 12:24 AM vice grips as a steering wheel (i think everyone's done that)
Milk crate as a driver's seat
Towed a trailer 80miles in front wheel drive with a beer can cut down and shoved in the rear output of my 242
wrapped an entire roll of duct tape around a power steering hose (the pressure one)
ran a sheetmetal screw into a broken brakeline.
probably the most getto-fantabulous thing i've ever done. . .
Driving back from a u-pull it about 70 mil from my house, my 78 powerwagon had the #7 rod bearing cap come off while i was driving.
pulled the spark plug, shoved that piston all the way up in the bore, snapped what was left of the studs off of the rod, put it all back together and babied it as far as it would go
Only had to walk 2 miles instead of 30.

That's going to be hard to beat.
Not quite Ghetto Fab but...
When I was a teen', borrowed the parents '76 Dodge Dart, and went 'wheeling. Two flat tires later, with only one spare, drove home with just one flat. After the flat tire disintagraded, drove the last ten miles on the rim only, through the city.
Heavy Metal Toy 11-08-2002, 09:28 AM lets not forget the high lift jack handle over the pretzeled tie rod.
elf_cruiser 11-08-2002, 09:50 AM i can't afford hubs, so i have to pull off a drive flange to flat-tow my junk, then put it back on for wheeling. I can't afford a trailer either...
damn i need a job...
RockRanger 11-08-2002, 09:53 AM I took 3 busted axle shafts and welded parts form each together to make one good one so I could go wheeling for the weekend. Didnt have enough needle bearings for the joint so each cap was missing like 3 bearings. Also tryed to weld the diff locked threw the fill plug but that didnt hold. It held for the weekend and teh next weekend I swaped in my new front end.

SilverZuk 11-08-2002, 02:10 PM My buddy got caught by the police driving a 68 Road runner with a fresh 440 in it.
He and another buddy were sitting on ramps, it had no hood, no windshield.
He got pulled over because he had a tail light out.
He got a ticket for the tail light only.
THE HANS 11-08-2002, 05:20 PM Me and me buddy were out wheelin and tried to drive ove a car the truck stalled and wouldnt start it was geting dark and the head lights didnt work battery or no battery. We remebered another ar about 1/8 of a mile away that had been there about 2 yrs we ran up there poped the hood saw the battery it was srewed in with a 9 mm and all we had was an 8 and a 10 we ended up using the 10 and a srewdriver to undo it we ran the battery back the truck started right up and is still in the truck:D
Rogue Bronco 11-08-2002, 05:45 PM When I was younger I busted my throttle cable on my civic.
I sat in the engine compartment(bottom of windshield) and worked the gas, while buddy drove with his head out the window steering and workin the clutch. First couple shifts were BRUTAL but eventualy we got the hang of it. Holder at about 3K and let him smooth the shift till the clutch was out, them I could goose it :D Glad Honda hoods open backwards cause we hit some main roads to get back home.
Rock Taxi 11-08-2002, 06:39 PM I blew the tranny in my 1982 SR5 Toyota 4x4 on I-35 150 miles from home. Drove the whole way on the shoulder in reverse, the only gear left.
2 weeks later my neck was back to normal.

RickyR 11-08-2002, 06:49 PM My rear Dana 60 30 spline axle is narrowed about 1.5". I broke the narrowed axle, so I cut down a rear hub as a spacer 1.5" got longer bolts, and used my longer spare axle for a weekend of wheeling in Tellico.
Funny thing is.... I broke the un-Booty Fabbed axle that weekend and drove out on the spacer side axle.
Now I'm doing 35 spline shit...
Ricky...seeya...
mytzlflick 11-08-2002, 06:53 PM the worst I have done has to be welding the anti-hop bar to a driveshaft peice and then welding the u-joint to the fram as an anti-hop arm just to go wheeling for the weekend, I think it was on there about 6 months before I built a real bar.
rEdNEcKwHeE1eR 11-08-2002, 06:57 PM I was in the truck with 4 wheelin
another time we drove in his dads back yard when we wernt even supposed to be driving the truck. Then the truck died and was out of gas, we tried some gas that was bad which didnt work then we found some carb cleaner and ran it on carb cleaner 1/2 way we finnally found some good gas and since we couldnt put it in the tank because of the other bad gas we primed it started it drove 15' then primed it drove 15' primed drove 15' untill we got back.
Hickeyjones 11-08-2002, 07:10 PM Sqaure tube driveshaft... it's the only one that lasts.
jasonmt 11-08-2002, 07:34 PM Let’s see: My 66 Chevy PU had combination wrenches welded on as door handles.
With a little bit of modification my onboard air tank - which used to be a fire extinguisher, can be used as a fuel tank & pump in my 88 4Runner. When I punctured the real one I "simply" filled up the tank with gas from a buddy’s jerry can, turn the pressure switch to 40# on, 50 # off, hookup to the inlet of your filter and your good to go.
masterbeavis 11-08-2002, 08:06 PM The worst thing I ever had to bootie fab involved a fiero. A bolt had stipped out of the rear end and the drive hub/brake assy. fell out of the lower control arm. When it fell out, and we hit a bump the spring pushed out the lower it all out. I dont know how the tire managed to stay on the car, but it did. We got a floor jack and pushed the car about a mile to get it off the road to fix it. The really annoyig thing (aside from being broke down in a fiero) was that the jack wouldnt ride straight, and the car kept crab walking in the wrong direction. The culprit turned out to be that somebody in the past used a 10mm bolt instead of a 3/8 bolt (or vice versa, cant remember now, but whicever is smaller) and because it was like .20 smaller, it had rattled around and eventually wore the shoulder of the bolt down enough to let the whole thing go.
