: Is this HP 60 Junk?
ChiScouter 11-07-2002, 12:40 PM Today came upon a Ford with a HP 60 at the boneyard. Problem is it has already been crushed. It is at the bottom of a pile of about 10 cars but I can see the axle rather well. The diff housing is cracked where the long side shaft comes out. It has dribbeled out a puddle under the diff as well indicating that it may be cracked elsewhere as well. Probably done by the crusher. The rest of it looks well enough from what I can tell. The BOM indicates a 4.10 open diff. If I bought the axle it would only be to resell, probably as parts. Because they would have to lift it up and cut it off it would still be around 200 bucks. Is this worth screwing around with?, or should I just let it die peacefully?
Dustin Smith 11-07-2002, 12:49 PM for 200 bucks, i would let this one go, nly thing worth selling would be the gears, and they are cheaper new, and they may not even still be good, after being crushed.
gunracer1 11-07-2002, 12:55 PM if the knuckles lived they are worth the asking price. and the axles should have lived. it's a toss up, get a good look at it. mike
4Bangler 11-07-2002, 01:09 PM Argh, nobody appreciates good parts anymore. I did some design work at GM Milford Provign grounds and they haul out semi truck laded with crushed test vehicles all the time, that I can understand on a liability standpoint, but they also crush grounds maintenence trucks and other non-experimental vehicles too. I watched a mid eighties rusty Chevy crew cab dually go by under a pile of flat Vette's, yup, 4x4, but the crusher added some serious camber to the driver's side wheel, probably snapped the tube out of the housing, hell, it was probably a big block too, non-recycling bastids.
BillaVista 11-07-2002, 01:28 PM A Crushed HP60.......Ohh the humanity!
Hard to say without seeing - and likely a gamble anyway.
But I agree - even if the housing itself is toast - there could easily be more than $200 worth of parts - esp. knuckle-out.
I say if you can asses knuckles out as good, incl lockouts and inner knuckle, take it and hope the shafts and gears are a bonus.
Tough call though.
rodzzilla 11-07-2002, 03:19 PM I'd buy it and if you can't use the parts, sell the inner and outer knuckles on Ebay.

That's changed now. They even recycle prototype vehicles since most are made from today's standard parts anyway. Any parts that MUST be detroyed are painted orange and ground up by the wrecking yard. Although I doubt anyone would want anything off most proving ground cars due to the abuse they get.
I remember my brother telling me about the forklift they had that was equipped with a Monty Carlo 6-way power bucket seat and had a Bose CD stereo system.:D
ForestCam 11-07-2002, 03:36 PM BTW I'll never understand why they would charge $200 for something that's definatly on it's way to scrap for $15 a ton.
ChiScouter 11-07-2002, 04:18 PM This is a big city self service yard. If I could have gotton to it I could have pulled it myself for around 125, but they charge 50 for the torch, and would probably hit me up for another 25 to get the forklift over to lift up the pile of cars. They don't really care what they scrap. This truck probably had a diesel, so they pulled it and crushed the rest without the truck even hitting the yard. Same thing happens to any truck with a BBC, they pull the engine, and the rest, no matter what it is gets crushed. The knuckles on this 60 look good, so I will give it a shot
