I have a 89 with a 242 with a slip yoke eliminator. I just bought a 98 with a 231, I would like to put the 242 in the new ride, they both have 4 speed autos. Is this a direct swap or is there a problem?

If I recall correctlly, that 89 242 will be a 27 spline input and the 98 231 will be 29.

Okay....

89 242 will have 21 splines....only a remote posibility of it having 23....

the 98 231 is most definitly a 23 spline....

if its similar year, and same input gear, then yes direct swap, speaking of mating the cases...

other issues will be the indicator lights and shift gate. overall case length is the same

So do I swap the output shafts on the trannys too, or the inputs on the trans casses?

You need to get a new input for the transfercase.

no, just the t-case input...

which is nice, considering swapping the output of the aw-4 would require disassembling THE WHOLE FAWKIN THING.

(which I have done on a couple of occasions)

Josh, the 27 and 29 #'s concern the 8.25 axle not the t-case, however you are correct about the years!!!!
