Check with the high schools and ask if they have an Adult Ed program.

There are welding classes at MSU and some others that I last saw advertised in the Cronicle in a continuing ed program pamphlet. I am sure that General Distributing would know and I think I saw some information at the Job Service.

I'm a firm believer in life-long learning when it comes to welding.

Unless you have an insanely good instructor, it would be impossible to become a great welder in a 10-12 week class.

You need a couple of weeks just to learn the basics, then you need a bunch of time just making puddles. You need to start doing some non-structural, non-life safety projects just to get the hang of it...then you start finding out the limitations of your welding skills, and you'll actually understand when some of the special techniques come into play--when you need to apply them--and then when you learn them in class, they're relevant.

After you've made a lot of shitty-looking welds, only then can you learn what watching the puddle means and how you can get better penetration and clean welds.

I did some basic welding in junior high, took a semester in high school, and have pretty much been welding for 22+ years. Only about 5 years ago when I did a weekend class to try to get my structural certification did the instructor's advice make any sense, and now I can make a good weld. (the 15 years in the middle weren't completely wasted, but had I had all that good info when I was 20--it wouldn't have been relevant to me, and I'd have forgotten it anyway)

I agree I am not trying to rush learning, or think I can learn it overnight. I have taken a semester at the Community College when I was in Highschool on Oxy/Ac welding and the basics behind welding.

I go to MSU and will ask the engineering dept. other then that I have looked in the paper and could not find anything.

Here you go. Dave is a good guy and a good instructor who actualy cares about the students. He has been teaching the engeneering welding classes for a while and has recently started evening tech classes.
