: D-90 Humvee Wheels

Well, I finished my new Hummer wheels for the D-90 today. My swamper TSL SX 36/12.5/16.5 tires will be here monday. The orange is to add some flare. Hey, at least they are not Chrome or big flash alloys. The Offset is just under 4.5"

For the time being, I will run the complete Magnesium runflat/bead lock, but I may in the future cut off the run flat portion.

Pretty swank!

What did you do to them (besides painting) to get them to fit? I imagine new bolt pattern and enlarge the center hole?

Puffdragon
11-07-2002, 06:07 PM
I made complete new centers. The old center is first cut out with a plasma torch, And then I weld in a new Laser cut center, made of 3/8" mat.

Where do you go to get stuff mounted on those split rims anyway?

Cool. Where did you get the wheel centers?
When you say 4.5" offset do you mean 4.5" backspacing?
If so why so much BS?
I have 4" BS on my 10" wide rims and have some contact inside the wheel wells rubbing on springs, inner fender etc.
I wish I had 3" or less. Of coarse wider axles will fix that:D

Yea, I meant 4.5" backspace or what ever you want to call it. I set that according to two other D-90 rims that I liked how they fit. One of those being Bill Ritche's rims. Humvee rims are 8.5" wide as well. The Centers are made for me, (My design) here just a short drive from the shop. As for mounting the tires, the tires just drop on, and you bolt the two halves together, and your done. I plan on only running a spare tire without a rim, as it is easier to replace the tire than the tire rim combo, due to the heavy Ass rims. Ohh, and did I say the rims are heavy. Talk about unsprung weight. The centers a mig welded fully around the diameter of the center, and centered/backspaced with a special jig I made. I have run the rims on the truck, without tires(truck on jack stands) and the rims are dead on, with zero wobble :D thank god.

What kind of price tag would you place on these wheels (hypothetically...if I asked you to make me a set...considering you have the design for the wheel centers, ability to weld and the jig for the BS'ing)?:D

NO FAWKIN WAY.
There's a reason I asked. I once watched one go through the roof of a goodyear store. We were required to use a cage to mount them in, and only certified stores could mount them. Usually commercial or industrial tire stores. I would rather mount F1 tires. Hell the wheels for the denver grand prix a few years back were scary enough for me. Theres a reason why you hardly EVER see split rims anywhere.

Red, just keep your head clear of the lock ring. Heeheheh. But seriously, they are actually safer than traditional bead locks to mount and inflate. The bead is already set, so you dont have a sudden burst of force on the rim, and the millitary wouldnt use them if GI's were getting there heads loped of by rims blowing out. Granted you have to confirm the integrity of the bolts and such, but its very safe to mount them. And we are only going up to maybe 30psi, which is the max rating for the Hummer rim. Tires don't tend to blow off unless they have over 50psi, trust me I know. I used to put bolts and crap on the bead of all the rover tires I replaced, and as soon as you hit about 60psi, the bead finally pops with so much force it shoots the bolt or what ever straight to the ceiling, and makes a dent in the tim roof. I got real good at poping B-12 caps off the bead, and catching the top behind my back.

RedRangie,

What split rims are you talking about? The Hummer rims, or the old style truck split rims with that big C-clip shaped outer rim that is not bolted to the rim (that fairly routinely jump off and hurt guys)?

The Hummer rims are no different than any of the 3 and 2 piece rims avail. that bolt together in the center (except that they are WAY beefy).

If you are really concerned, then bolt it all together and get a clipon air chuck and stand back while you fill it (which I try to do anyway on my beadlocks).

Billster,

Thanks for the clarification. I have only driven a few hummers, and that was 10 years ago. I never worked on them. They wouldn't work for the type of work we did in intel. (couldn't really be clandestine in a hummer)

The old style splits were dangerous as hell. I have done lot's of three piece racing wheels. I wasn't aware that they (hummers) are the same style. Thanks!

out of pure curiosity, how much do these hummer wheels run a piece berfore modification? Since your esentiall ptting in a new center, can I also assume that any desired backspacing can be attained? (within reason of course!)

see that red? i actually DID know what i was talking about this time :D

and i know what you mean about the truck split rims, ive heard plenty of stories of men losing their arms from those rims.

a guy that i am pretty good friends with was working in a truck service bay when one blew off. took off the guys arm and the whole rim (with the arm) rocketed through the roof and landed on top of the building. my friend was the one who had to climb up there and get the arm, or at least so he tells me

Sorry to say it daniel, really I am sure you are a great guy, but you just cant stop pimpin your stuff can you. It seems like you are always trying to get free advertising. Dont think we dont know what you are doing. Oh, and I have been on the cover of a Magazine too and I am a vendor, Whoopedood. Get over it man and keep the advertising to your web site.

Sorry man I have read this a few times, and I still feel it needs to be said. I dont speak for everyone on the board, but I am sure alot feel like me. I have seen you, wolfgang and others doing this since I first got on the board.

And yes even posting a link to your stuff is advertising. It takes up space, and gets a large voulme of people to look at your site.

Anyway, I will stop now. Sorry Guys I just got a little steamed, if you only knew how bad the UNIMOG forum was a few weks back.

Although I feel similiar to you KC, I have a different view point.

As a consumer of 4x4 products, I like to buy products from good vendors that cator to the niche market needs that many of us have. Although some may do a little too much advertising... if that is what it takes to keep them in business, than I am all for it. It is nice to know that vendors on this board can compete in the somewhat saturated market, with low overhead costs (maybe can be read low advertising costs), in order to offer the minority in the market the products we need at a cost that is normally reasonable...

Oh yeah, almost forgot that you may want to retitle your link to the other board, as "The complete story of how I got started making the hummer rim centers and welding them in at a different off-set than normal, just after talking to a guy in town that lazer cuts a round disc of steel for me, and investing in a GMAW welder..."

Don't get me wrong it is great that you are doing it now....Jason Paule wasn't able to keep up with the demand after he was the first (if memory serves me correctly) to start doing this.

by the way that link sucked all the pics were gone and i didn't learn a thing.

Granted most people will say I'm baised but I am not in Dallas anymore and I have no official contact with Never Summer I like KC's products and he has made my truck incredibly more capable than it was before I Fawked it up. I have learned a lot from him and I think that he's an incredible fabricator but don't hijack a thread unless you are willing to truly start offerring a product to us

TB,

Just because you may not like the 6x6 doesn't give you any right to bag the rig as "the ugliest, goofiest..." If you have respect for him, it sure didn't show in either of your bandwagon posts.

Daniel has contributed one heck of a lot more to this site than you or KC has. You jump on the bandwagon and trash Daniels design, and somehow think you won't get called on it. Daniel has earned a lot of peoples respect on this site...Somthing you have yet to accomplish.

I'm not sure what you mean by "bitch keeper" so I'll leave that one alone.

Poopie smudge?

J bradley
11-11-2002, 05:27 PM
.. Point taken.. What anyone has contributed is a moot point however as I stated an opinion on how it looks, not drives or articulates or what it is used for ( what is it used for??) ... it looks goofy and ugly, I stand by that. I have 2 eyes and can make a call like that. Also I am not color blind - can you see that green color ???

In the same way you thought I was hopping on a bandwagon to bash someone I though you were trying to defend his( or be his B1tch keeper of :) ) his bandwagon ..

Clear concise communication is critical to conveying your concerns and conquering confusion . That is why it is good to go back and forth like this to resolve issues.

peace.

If you want to know more arout the 6x6, then check out this (last?) months issue of 4wheeler...It's on the cover.

I know the owner, and I know what he put into it to make it his personal ride. And as a side note, he's a great guy too. I supose I did act a little harsh when I read your post...And for that I appologize.

Would I own it? Do I like the fab work? I'll keep that one to myself. Does Stan LOVE it? YES!!! And in the end, that's all that matters.

Hehehe Doug if I didnt think you were already pissed at me for some BS reason, I would take offense at you slightly putting me down. But what the hell. As for your comment 9v at no time did I ever try to sell those rims on this Forum. I made one set for me, and I would gladly make a set for anyone who wants to pay. But I have been part of this land rover crowd alot longer than you have, going well back to the first days of modifiying D-90's for what we do here in the US. And I felt the others on the board might like to see what I made for my personal truck, and it seemed that they did. If I am not welcome to post pics of the fun i am having building my truck, because I am a vendor, then I probably should shut down and get a Job, because I am in this for fun not money, Shiat most people that come in my shop for minor work usually get out for free unless I need parts. I love the rover crowd due to its easy going nature, and its lack of self superiority. As for others (including me) posting what comes across as an add for business, It should not be here.

Ok, now that we have all made up, I thought I might tell you guys I got the tires mounted yesterday, and they look sweeeeet. they are just about the right size for my truck right now, and fit the rims perfectly. I have gotten it on the highway at over 70mph, and it rides like a dream even though the tires are not balanced yet. I figure each tire and rim are about 150 pounds, and are a real bitch to put on the truck by yourself. but they sure did help in streatching my retained springs. I will post some pics as soon as I get a chance.

Oh, and I love you to Doug. Its nice when people can make up. I feel I should express to the others how much you have helped me, and that I owe you alot in how my life has turned out. Your a true freind man. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
