What do you use for heat in your camper shell when winter camping? some sort of tent heater? I'm not looking for a full blown espar (http://www.espar.com/) set up, just a small portable safe heat source.

I used a propane buddy in the ambulance and it worked great.

I used one of them Colman tent heaters, it ain'tthe hottest thing but it does make it comfortable. If you run it full blast, plan on waking up around 4:00 in the morning to put a new propane bottle on it

I'd also suggest getting some sort of CO monitor.

THIS /thread

I've been using the big buddy (by Mr Heater) in a small enclosed ice shack for years now. It has a pilot light so it shuts off when flame out, low O2 shutoff, if you bump it, it shuts off. Very safe and needs no extra ventillation (camps/tents/shacks are never airtight enough to cause problems.

I've ran a CO monitor with PPM display and it has never shown more than 2 PPM, and is usually at 0.

At work (underground mining) we are allowed to work in 25 PPM CO for a full shift no problem.

Also, another added benefit, since all the exhaust gas stays inside, these are 100% efficient, no chimney to lose all your heat through.

I run mine with a hose and a thirty pound bottle. The bottle is usually good for at least five days (heat at night, wood stove during the day,) running the heater, lantern and propane oven/stove. This is in an ice shack 8 x 14 feet in the middle of lake abitibi (lots of big wind/cold).

Edit: Oh yeah, and it throws a fucking shit ton of heat (18000 BTU) on high, we usually run it on low, only upgrade I would like is a thermostat, which is available on the next model up heaters, which are wall mount. Check out Mr Heater's website.

I knew a guy back in the 70s who used a Army tent stove he set on the open tailgate. Then one of my Great Uncles had a wood stove he had made out of a piece of 10 inch well casing he welded a plate about 6 inches up filled it full of sand then welded a bottom plate on it. IIRC it was 18 inches tall with a 2 or 3 inch exhaust pipe feeding out the back of his cab over camper. He said it kept it nice and toasty while burning twigs, and small branches, and the top was big enough to put the coffee pot on in the morning!

Make your shop woodstove portable! That way you get biscuits and gravy too!

This is the answer Fred, or maybe talk Leah into bringing a another chick into the relationship, ya know, for extra body heat and stuff...

I use a Coleman SportCat with a small propane bottle. Lasts about 10 hours and I have good luck with leaving the side window open about 1".
