: NP205 in a cruiser - Crossmember pics??
GloNDark 11-08-2002, 08:58 AM Anybody got pics of their crossmember for the NP 205 in a cruiser?? I know some of you are running that set up.
I decided last night that a custom crossmember would be cleaner than trying to bootie fab the stock chevy one in there. :embarassed: So now I am looking for ideas. Anyone??
GloNDark 11-08-2002, 09:31 AM NEVERMIND!!! I found this jewel........DROOL!!!! NICE Medusa!!
Off to the steel supply shop. :D
dieselcruiserhead 11-08-2002, 09:45 AM Can the rear output of the 205 be switched to run offset rear?

I know this guy did it. Something about using parts from an NP200 or something like that. I had started looking into it, but then decided to swap axles while I was at it. :D

Yes, but then you would have full time 4WD:(
Running with your front hubs open would be OK, but not for those of us runninng a non-balanced, square tube front DS.

Chris:
Thanks for that link - I was under the impression it could only be in 4WD.

Mine actually are bootie fabbed stock crossmembers:D :D The center sections are stock , thus allowing use of stock or aftermarket poly mounts (shown in th epic). The outers (the rectangular tubing) are custom. So, I guess you could call it ia bootie fab hybrid:cool2:
dieselcruiserhead 11-08-2002, 10:16 AM What's the gearing in the 205, and would it's only advantage for someone still running cruiser axles would be the ease of a 203 installation?

well from that angle I would have never guessed. But yeah that's a killer idea was well!! NEAT!! Thanks again!
diesel, the gearing for the 205 sucks. It's just a tad under 2 to 1 (Like 1.97 or something, someone correct me if I am wrong) However it is bullet proof. And it was free in my situation, and already rebuilt and mated to a rebuilt SM465.
I hear rumors of a 3 or 4 to 1 kit, but after having the case apart I couldn't imagine how in the hell the could work that one.

Yeahh Riiight Jack - We know you are a bootie Fab kinda guy....Not!
wngrog 11-08-2002, 11:12 AM 3:1 kit for the 205 is right around the corner.
465 to 205 is a great combo with D60's or a 9" since you can go LOW in those diffs to make up for the crappy stock 1.97 NP205 gearing.
205's are bad ass, nearly free and not too long.
reorx 11-08-2002, 11:21 AM Medusa I like the crossmembers, but just a quick question: Do they have a removeable section in the middle in case you have to drop the tranny/tcase? It looks like its part of the frame...
(Reminds me that I need to work on my xmember to make it not
hang down so low at the frame rails... )
Medusa 11-08-2002, 01:31 PM Do they have a removeable section in the middle in case you have to drop the tranny/tcase? It looks like its part of the frame...
They are welded securely to the frame, I won't be able to
"drop" the gear boxes. When I have to do that the gear boxes will come out the top. I am fabricating a new tranny hump that extends the entire length of the FJ45 cab floor and exposes all of the gear boxes. The input shaft on my NP 205 extends from the case by only 1.25", so I only have to move the 205 back that far before it can be separated from the adapter. Once the 205 has been removed, the SM465 and NP203 can be moved back and out the top. At least that is the way it works on paper, but as you all know these bootie fab operations never work right in practice:D :D ... THanks, Jim for the vote of confidence in my junk.
ranger 11-08-2002, 01:33 PM The one I had was similar to Medusa, but not as nice! Sorry no pic, and the cruiser is somewhere on the Easst Coast now:(... I shortened the stock 205 mount, by removing stock on both sides of the mount then welded it together. Used stocks mounts and it bolted to the bottom of the frame. Wasn't tucked up nice and tight like Medusa's, but I really never had any clearance issues. I liked the bolt in version because it allowed me to remove the tranny and xfer as one unit.:skull:

yeah no kidding. :D I wanna know too! Any info on price yet??
Eskimo 11-08-2002, 07:04 PM Last I heard on the 3:1's was March, and it will be around $800. Off-road design I think is doing them? I keep tabs on Colorado K5 for info.
I've got the shortened mount that ranger mentioned. Not flat and slick like medusa's, but it works.
