I am running an edelbrock performer ( carter clone)1406 on a Chev V8 Land cruiser. I could not pass emissions ...running way 3x too rich. Engine has about 30k on it and runs 15" of vacuum steady. Carb has about 10k on it and barely passed last year. Problem is I have leaned it out 3 steps as per edelbrock instructions, and still burns too rich. I still cannot pass IM. Edelbrocks come rich from the factory and are set up for seal level. Just thought I'd throw it out and see if anyone has a suggestion.
BTW Timing is right on, new plugs and hei...pvc and filter new..blah blah tried everything I can think of.

sounds like a bunch of tuneing issues..
the fact that you only pull 15" at steady throttle indicates that the mixture is off or the timing is off, quite posably both. yes the carbs come slightly ritch from the factory, but will usualy pass as is, worst case you might have to do some tweeking or step down 3-6 % as per the manuel

you state the timing is on. did you check it with the vaccume advance disconected? is it hooked to the corect port? have you checked to make sure the mecanicall advance is working properly? how about the vaccume advance?

Thanks for the help... It does hold steady at idle and jumps between 2-24" when I Open and close throttle quickly. As I recall that is "good" vacuum.
I am running the vac advance on the passenger side port.
Mechanical is working fine. I leaned it out 4%-then 8% and 12% according to the manual and Edelbrock techline. Pretty simple to do BTW. I did drop my secondary jets down to .92 from stock .95 and keep thinking that will help when secondaries open. I dont think they open on the test/ no load though.
What do you suggest my timing shoudl be at, what works for you?

the port that you hook the vaccume advance to shuld be the one above the throttle plates ie: no vacc at idle
id prob try to have about 8-12 degrees at idle, then have mecanical advance add up to another 20 degrees, all in by about 3500 rpm.

ohyha, i forgot, double check and make sure the rods are geting pulled down into the jets at idle. to do this just take the little inspection covers off while its running, if they arnt, theres the problem, to stif of springs and or binding. they shuld drop down at any thing over about 6-9" of vaccume.
