: F-Toy #69 LCQ prep 2011
Jeepskickass 12-16-2010, 06:29 PM As some of you already know, Robert isn't going to be able to make KOH this year due to military obligations, :usa:, so he asked me to step up from the co-driver position to drive the car in this years LCQ. I, of course, said "FAWK YEAH, I WILL!"
At KOH 2010, Todd at CUSTOM SPLICE (http://www.customsplice.com/) had expressed an interest in helping us out, and hooked us up with a fresh winch line and fairlead. Robert decided to give him a call about getting a new PINKline this year to replace the blue one from last year. Much to our surprise, Todd asked how else he could help out. Long story short, we are proud to have Todd and CUSTOM SPLICE (http://www.customsplice.com/) as our title sponsor this year.
Thank you, Todd, because without your help, In the Pink Racing (http://www.inthepinkracing.com/) never would have had the momentum we have right now.
Last year, the car was completed in less than two months. Needless to say, not everything was done exactly how we wanted it to be. We won't be doing a major rebuild here, just a freshening and some upgrades.
Stay tuned....
toymaniac 12-16-2010, 08:35 PM I can't wait for updates on the truck. Super excited.

P.S. I had never heard of Custom Splice till you advertised them. Their prices are great, I'm definitely going to have to get me some new rope for Christmas.

Mike get it man. I can't wait to see updates. :grinpimp:
Jeepskickass 12-17-2010, 08:37 AM First thing was the Custom Splice (http://customsplice.com/) PINK winch rope and extension, and fairlead. Gotta love the color! :D
Jeepskickass 12-17-2010, 09:11 AM The front axle seals were leaking, so I pulled the front axles out. Rich at SBWinVPS (http://sbwinvps.com/index.php) bought a set of Trail Gear's knuckle studs for us, so this was the perfect time to install them.
Inspecting the Longfields (http://longfieldsuperaxles.com/), one side felt loose and clunky. I called Bobby Long, and he said send 'em up, he'd take care of it. These are one of his original sets of 30 splines, and they've seen quite a bit of abuse. You gotta love a vendor that stands behind their product no matter what. I don't know why anybody would run anything other than Longfields (http://longfieldsuperaxles.com/) in a Toyota axle.
Of course, while I had it apart, I repacked the wheel bearings and installed new brake pads.

There is no order to his sigline. In fact I believe he rushed to add Yukon today while at work. We appreciate all the sponsors we have and everything they do for us equally. I really don't want to clutter up the rigs thread with this stuff but if there are any issues or concerns you can contact me at any time since I'm the team manager. :roxy:

Jeepskickass 12-18-2010, 05:05 PM During KOH 2010, we were boogeying across the desert at about 50 when we lost a tie-rod bolt... Which resulted in Robert completely losing steering control, and one hell of a wild ride! I managed to backtrack on foot and find the bolt and one misalignment spacer, but not the other one. We never did replace it, so today I went down to Baker's Machine Shop here in Simi. My buddy Karl banged some out in just a few minutes for us. Now we have four new ones on the car, plus four new spares.
Thanks again, Karl! :D

Spend hours and hours and hours and hours testing and tuning your suspension for the whoops. Your body will thank you for it.
Whoops @ JV are nothing like the whoops you'll be riding following TT's and Class 1 cars.
Mr Roxy 12-22-2010, 04:31 PM Definatly will be spending some time with Cris from FOA doing shock tuning. Well we got the sample radiator sent off to Griffin. We are working with them on a replacement drop in toyota radiator. Also work will be alittle slow right now as California is under water, and Mike got something in his eye and has been out of commision since sunday. Look for more updates soon.

Mr. Roxy and Todd from Custom Splice (our awesome title sponsor...buy your winch line here (http://www.customsplice.com/)) have asked for pictures of the engine. Let me tell ya... I don't see the excitement factor (its in the back of the truck) but here it is.

if you move that motor out of the way, we can see what kind of tire you picked up:flipoff2:
:laughing::laughing: That is the tire that used to be Katie's tire swing. (Note the giant eye screw) That tire made an appearance at many birthday parties, a wedding (Mel & Robert's) many family barbeques, and now its part of our racing adventure. :D
I wish we had a great tree at this house...it would be back in commission.
Jeepskickass 01-02-2011, 07:27 PM One of the things on our wish list was a set of aluminum beadlock wheels. Todd at CUSTOM SPLICE (http://www.customsplice.com/) made a phone call, and two weeks later, we had a set of shiny new Trail Ready wheels! :D:D:D

gp_frk 01-03-2011, 09:11 AM Hey guys I was just looking at that water pump pulley on the LCE website and it says its "not recommended for low RPM applications like rock crawling". No experience with it myself but I thought I'd toss that out there.
am4x4 01-03-2011, 01:46 PM Are you using the factory wiring harness and ecu, going with a stand alone system, or are you keeping the BBQ gas? If you keep the factory stuff and need help hacking it let me know, I have done a couple. I can even bring my buggy over to cheat off. It looks like an 85-88 motor which is a lot harder that the later ones but still not that big of a deal.

Jeepskickass 01-16-2011, 06:58 PM Robert flew out to help work on the car this weekend, so we took the car to Cragrat's shop for a wrenching frenzy.

wckedyota 02-09-2011, 04:29 PM Awesome work guys. Watched on the live feed. Good luck Friday!
MT4Runner 02-10-2011, 09:54 AM Crossing my fingers!!
Ape, you did a great job of running up the hill with the winchline. A lot of codawgs were dogging it (they probably ended up in the 18:xx range because of it!)
Motor sounded GREAT!!
MT4Runner 02-14-2011, 02:46 PM I noticed you were running the Yaesu FTM-10R.
How did the intercom work for you? Mine's a tad quiet, but good. Radio works great.
MP3 tunes into the helmet work great, too!!

Intercom needs work, we ended up disabling it because of feedback through the speakers :(
It's getting pulled out of the car this week and sent out to Dirk at 4x4 Oil to get fixed (I hope )

This.
I ended up having to solder it together in the trailer on the lakebed. Do you have any input on how yours is wired? I couldn't find any pre-built harnesses :(
MT4Runner 02-14-2011, 04:25 PM Shoot, guys, I wish I'd have known you planned to use this intercom. I could have emailed a schematic.
I recommended the FTM-10R to Robert a year ago, then figured you were going with a high-zoot intercom system instead when I didn't hear anything about it. I peeked in the car and was surprised to see this one!
There isn't shit out there for harnesses for these, and most people who buy them put them in their Gold Wing or other highway touring motorcycles, and tie them into the existing intercom or powered helmet speaker systems. Those schematics you can Google. Not much on using the -10R to power unpowered helmet speakers.
I kept thinking I was getting feedback through the mic, and kept trying different resistors and capacitors in series with the mic, and could never fix the feedback. The radio TX/RX functions always worked great, so I assumed the problem was with the mic.
I added a very low -ohm resistor in series with each speaker (headphone) circuit and the feedback went away. I ran to radio shack and bought 0-20 -ohm rheostats to use for volume controls, and they work great. You can't turn the knob 100% of the way up or it still howls, but you can still go ~0-12.
I introduced myself to Dirk on Friday morning before the race.
Have him get a hold of me! :grinpimp:
You're also welcome to send it my way, and I'll throw in some resistors and send it back.
I only used the intercom function when I was testing out the radio. For my one and only race in September, my co-dawg borrowed an open-face helmet, so we never tested the intercom in a race setting.
MT4Runner 02-14-2011, 04:26 PM Phil Pelaez was going to use one in his LCQ buggy. Here's the directions I emailed him:
Hi Phil,
You'll need to be just a little bit of an electronics geek (or maybe you have one on your team) to put the Yaesu FTM-10R together as an intercom:
Need:
Yaesu FTM-10R.
MEK-M10 front panel Mic Adapter Jack
(2) of the CT-M11 headset connector cables. One will plug/screw into the standard rear panel jack, the other will plug/screw into your new MEK-M10 jack.
Helmet/headset:
Pin 1 tip = Speaker Ground
Pin 2 = Microphone Positive
Pin 3 = Speaker Positive
Pin 4 base = Microphone Ground
Pin 1 is the tip of the plug, pin 4 being the base ring.
In this pic, the contacts would be 4(base) - 3 - 2 - 1(tip)
Connect the 2 lines (green and blue) from CTM-11 cable to a 390K ohm resistor each. Tie the opposite ends of those two resistors together and connect that to one side of the PTT.
Connect the microphone out line from the headset cable (Pin 1) to the microphone in line on the Yaesu (orange)
Connect the ground on the Yaesu (red) to the ground on the headset cable and to the PTT output.
When the PTT switch is thrown, it pulls the microphone line to ground, signaling the Yaesu to open the transmitter. It sends a modulated microphone signal on the same line to the Yaesu microphone input. If you leave the resistors out, or use too small of resistor, it cycles through your bands (VHF-UHF-FM-AM), but doesn't open the transmitter!
Connect the speaker in on the headset cable to the either the left (brown) or right (black) speaker out on the Yaesu. (I used left). Connect the volume rheostat (or an ~8ohm resistor) in series here or you’ll get bad feedback.
You need to do the "extended transmit mod" for the FTM-10R found here: http://www.mods.dk/index.php?ModelId=991&RadioRec=yaesu so you can extend the reach into the Land Mobile Radio Service bands (race radio frequencies).
DISCLAIMER: "I'm NOT advising you to do this mod. I'm just saying IF you did do this mod, these are the things you COULD do. this is technically illegal per the FCC. OK, doing the mod is not technically illegal, but operating the radio in those freqs is technically illegal."
Cool thanks MT, I will get ahold of you when we I get the radio.
Thanks again.
Dirk
apeters89 02-15-2011, 10:02 AM Phil Pelaez was going to use one in his LCQ buggy. Here's the directions I emailed him:
I basically did that.
In the end I added a 2.2 kohm resistor across the leads to the mic (as shown for the vx-8 on the spec sheet you attached).
It helped, but didn't solve it. Maybe the resistor in line with the speaker input will help more. I assumed the problem was related to everything sharing the same ground.
I found the 10R by researching other options myself. It's funny that you had brought it up before. I wish I'd have known, those instructions would have saved me a lot of time
Mr Roxy 04-02-2011, 06:19 AM Well as you all know we teamed up with Big Ugly, and got into the big race. Well Kevin and Mike both drove a hell of a race and were in a great spot. Well on Sun Bonnet the input let go and took us out of the race. Marlin and his crew did a hell of a job trying to get the car back in the race working with our crew but it was just to big of a job so they called the race. Well Marlin really stepped up after the fact and and I would like to welcome our newest sponsor Marlin Crawler. They sent us a new W56 H/d trans and a new set of T-cases loaded with all of Marlin's goodies. All of us here at inthePINKracing want to thank them.

Mr Roxy 04-02-2011, 02:34 PM Got some more of the car put back together. Artec Indistries gave us a Quart Crate for the car, and somehow through all the prep it didn't make it in the car. For that, we apologize to Artec, but today got it all painted and in the car. We look forward to working with them some more and want to deck the race trailer out with ther product. Also Dirk at 4X4OIL sent us some more fluid for the rest of the Ultra4 season. Very upstanding vendor and has always been quick reliable, so remember 4X4OIL for your next Amsoil purchase.
MtnMan210 04-02-2011, 08:10 PM Looking good Robert! Very cool of Marilin and 4x4Oil
